I like all these ideas!!! I like that sheers provide some daytime privacy while letting in light, and they are so simple and inexpensive, but they just don't offer much in the way of substance, which I feel like those corner windows require. atkillery9 -- I like the look of Roman shades, but I want to stop using mine for a couple reasons: 1 - most of the light comes through the top of the windows, which is blocked whether they are open or closed 2 - they are difficult to use because I think they are designed for outside mount and hung on a rod. Raising or lowering is a PITA because you have to reach behind the blind, pull it away from the window, then raise or lower with the cord, and manually lock it into place (but since I rarely lower them I figured it was okay, I think I bought them on clearance 8 years ago and we had to cut them down and do a few other things to make them fit ... they aren't even long enough for the windows they end about 2 or 3" short at the bottom). And, when I do let them down, then it's a big ordeal to raise them up to the same heights again due to having to manually lock them into place. When the blind fell down, I realized that I don't need these crazy jerry-rigged blinds in my life. I'm tired of fussing with them and I really want to let more light into the room. AnnieD -- Your idea would be great for a stationary window, but for mine both the bottom and top can be opened and I often open/shut. In fact, with the Roman shades off altogether it's much easier to open the top window! For now they are just stacked toward the corner, which I can live with. I like it better than when I had them tied together. When we re-do the room, I'm going to go with the idea to add some color with panels; I'll make some room-darkening panels for the window. At first I was thinking to outside-mount them over the sheers, but I guess I will make a decision about that once I start re-doing the room. I'll try to see if I can find inspiration pics online to help me decide. The main thing, for my DH, is that he wants to be able to darken the room sometimes. I don't think I would have come up with this on my own, it's been so helpful to post here, thank you!

Update the backsplash, that's the most dated element in the space. The busy mosaic is clashing with the busy countertop. A simple, cream subway tile (or whatever the lightest color in the counter it) would go a long way in updating the space.

Several things..the island will feel less contrived if you were to replace the table with a round. The current square brings too much attention to the angle of the island. Either replace the foyer wallpaper or re-do the wainscoting to match the two—tones in the d.r. If you decide to replace the foyer paper be aware of background white/off-white/creme, etc. when choosing your paint color. I agree new fans without lights is in order. I think once you have all elements in place then would be a good time to reselect your lighting. Lighting has a huge influence on the overall look you are trying to achieve. Your home is lovely and has a very nice lived-in look. Good job!

I like the topiary trees and the palms... but I don't think them there like that is doing your lovely porch any favors. The palms for for sure overwhelming the spaces. What do you want out of your porch? Simple curb appeal? Somewhere to sit outside and enjoy the porch? Want more than just porch and would like some patio? Or just want nice garden? Landscaped, flowers, veggies or herbs perhaps? I like how celerygirls mockup has the porch enclosed- screened or glass, an enclosed porch can be nice to desirable depending on where you live and otherwise want to use that space.
