Walmart, or any other store with a sporting department, has them.
They are called ice cleats.

Mine are yaktrax. My first pair was like the ones below:

Now I own the pro version, which closes over the top of the shoe, and you are less likely to loose them while walking.

I can highly recommend these, never slipped or fell while using them.

Yaktrax people, have you had any problems skidding on hard, dry ice? One of my cousins advised against getting them for that reason, but I received a pair as a Christmas gift this year. Usually I use sharp cleats.

One tip given to me by a clerk in a sporting goods store: Set aside a pair of old shoes or boots, and keep the cleats on them permanently. Then you don't have the bother of taking the cleats on and off. And never wear them in the house!

I bought a pair and forget to wear them. When the guys clean our streets it leaves an icy street which is harder to walk on than snow.

Susan, when I lived in Tulsa, I lived about 3/4 mile from my drugstore. I needed to pick up some meds, and it was VERY icy out, to icy to attempt to drive back up the hill from walgreens.

I put my yaktrax on, and walked there on a sheet of ice.

No problem with any walking, downhill, nor uphill! I love those things!

Be very careful walking in to a slick surface store! for some reason, they are not slip proof on linoleum.

You shouldn't try walking on them inside as they are somewhat slipper but outside they work great.

I've used several kinds and Yaktrax are the best. I keep them on the same boots and then leave the boots at the door. They would ruin my wood floors. I used to walk everyday, because the dogs needed it. But they are now all over 10 years old and really don't need as much exercise. Thank goodness, because it's a high of -3 today with a wind chill. No thanks, I'll walk on the treadmill

I have yak trax and like them. I got some for my mom and she does what Alisande suggests, keeps them on a pair of shoes by the back door. They are great on ice or hard snow. You cannot wear them indoors, so they aren't,t so great for running to the grocery store and you certainly cannot wear them while driving.

Having just received a small amount of snow - about a couple of inches - I planned to wear rubber boots, so put shoes into a plastic bag to bring with me, then did some other things, including hauling feed and water (need two water pans, bringing one into the house to thaw, daily) to the shed to nourish the cat.

After getting out the car, closing the door and taking the cat's dishes back to the house, I picked up a couple of bags of things that I need ... but the bag with the shoes had disappeared ... so I'm travelling in the library unshod ... which is O.K as long as one doesn't put one's foot down on some snow that recently was tracked in by others.
