Drosophila — fruit fly
I read about them. I look at them on the screen on the outside of the screen, trying to get through the screen in the late summer.
I try to keep all fruit in anything that could ever meant probably that would include toothpaste and toothpicks, under a clouche or wrapped or in a cupboard or in the refrigerator…
I’ve been observing the fruit flies that have been collecting the rim wine glass on the nightstand next to the bed.
I have been successful in the past with wine or vinegar in a glass, covered with plastic film with holes in it. This year they’re not going into the wine glass. They’re staying on the rim. Okay, I thought, maybe they are tasting what might have been on the rim of the glass. So I put a piece of plastic wrap, saran wrap or whatever over the glass of wine. I’ll sacrifice it to them. I poke holes in the plastic wrap. They don’t go in. I make the whole a little larger. I make many holes. I wait. They do not go into the wine in the glass. They stay on the rim or on top of the plastic film.
I watched them for about a day. Same glass I think I even refreshed it a bit. Only one of them went into the glass the liquid underneath the plastic film. The glasses filled only a third but I don’t wanna waste any more wine and they know damn well it’s white wine.
I finally cornered one of the fruit flies and I asked him what the heck gives. Why aren’t they going into the liquid underneath the plastic films. I promise to let the fruit fly go if he was honest with me. He told me that they had all watched a documentary on PBS about fruit flies and how people are trying to trap them with plastic over a glass of vinegar or wine or whatever the hell. They couldn’t propagate that documentary fast enough and they all figured it out and now they’re not ever going go on the other side of plastic because they were caught and killed and suffocated and so they will just hang out on the room of the glass and sniff the fuse of the vinegar or on the cheap white wine.
Honor bound, I let the fruit fly go — outside. I had not told him I was going to let him go inside the house. I just said I would let it go; so I kept my word (technically.)
I don’t have any fruit or mashed brains of watermelon or anything like that around and I asked you to take a good look on the kitchen counters to be sure there was nothing that a fruit plywood find attractive — no fruit, no peaches, no pears, no apples and so on. He said that there wasn’t anything and I believed him.
Later, when looking around the kitchen, I saw a couple of oranges. That’s but still oranges. I also saw some fresh ginger root, a couple of red onions which seemed to be willing to ferment, and a few cloves of garlic lying around the counters.
As for the fruit flies that are all over the rim of the wine glass. I left it upstairs. It’s a little teeny wine glass. I waited until about 20 fruit flies collected on the rim then I got the vacuum cleaner and using just the end of the vacuum cleaner hose without a broom on the end, I collected and sucked up the fruit flies. Then I found there were some on the walls. I got those then I found there were some on a lampshade. I got those then I found there was some more hanging out hiding on a right angle between two wall surfaces. I collected those two into the vacuum cleaner they went.
Our vacuum cleaner is an in-house VAT and the canister is about 5 miles away in the garage between all the perturbation and dust turmoil they’re gonna be choked to death and they are not gonna be alive after they hit the canister or after they hit the canister and get bubbled around with more of the canister. They’re not gonna be. If you don’t need, I know you don’t care enough, but you could look under respiration of fruit flies and see their little lungs.
There was actually a page of a fly, and you could listen to a fruitfly heartbeat. And you’re right, I played that with them thinking I would’ve scratched them to the vacuum cleaner the mouth, but they weren’t having any.
I know that we had a hard frost a few days ago, so they’re probably not too many outside.
It’s for the one blast that I’m leaving on the nightstand, but I’ve noticed is they are willing to hang around the rim that could be 20 of them if I wait long enough. They don’t go into the glass and they won’t go through the plastic whether or not the plastic is they are not. They are still not going to go down into the glass and drown. One of them did and I felt really uncomfortable watching him suffer so that’s not a good idea. I don’t wanna kill them slowly. I want them out out out.
But I noticed that if there’s a light on, they’re on the wine glass rim. The minutes of light out if I’m just watching TV, but there’s no light on the nightstand. They’re not there. I don’t know what they do for evening. They probably find some place on the wall and fall asleep, but they don’t wanna be around the wine glass if it’s not illuminated..
When people post earlier about something those yellow sticky thing or trap or fruit flies, I dismissed it because I had already purchased. Some kind of blue lightbulb thing didn’t attract anything at all after two years of being on. So I dismiss all of these gadgets then with the fruit flies, buzzing around my illuminated iPad and I’m watching television and I see them fly around the room and they can really move when they accelerate I mean, I would say they go maybe 2530 miles an hour. Otherwise they just aimlessly dither. At night with the television on I see them flying around the room between me and the television screen.
They’re really not bothering me that much because if I have that empty wine glass, they’re happy just to hang out on the rim until night. Again when it’s dark, they’re not gonna be around there. So weird.
And I’m sure you all know that researchers love fruit flies because they reproduce really quickly and they’re good for experimenting and learning about genetics.
So maybe they can come over and collect fruit flies. I won’t charge.
