hi everyone,

looking for a cookbook stand that can hold thick to thin - cookbooks, magazines and possibly newspaper recipes...

plastic splatter guards - worth it???

any and all suggestions would be most appreciated :)

The cheap acrylic cookbook holder is the only one I've ever found that works well for me. It's a bother if your hands are messy and you have to turn the page, because you have to lift the book out, but I find the pages will flip themselves just when I don't want them to in the kind that has the pegs. If I have a book too big for the stand, I find that it'll stay open on the counter well enough.

I also have an adaptation for loose papers. I have a clear round "spatter screen" that's useless for its intended purpose, but makes a great removable backrest that holds printouts and magazines securely at the correct angle. Any rigid sheet would do.

One of the things l like about this is that I can put two or three printer pages side by side (three overlap, but by covering margins can be made to work).

That's a great idea of using a splatter screen to support your loose pages in the clear holder. I'd do that, but I don't have a holder :-)

I put my page in a page protector, clip a clothespin to it and shut the cupboard door on it. The clothespin stops it from falling out of the door and holds it at a right height.

As usual, I find Rachelellen's post full of wisdom. It gives me some of the guidance I want. Cooking the same cuisine (not the same dishes) for one week straight would be no hardship at all for me. When I returned from a one week trip to Italy I cooked nothing but northern Italian food for at least three weeks. There was nothing monotonous about it. That experience has faded. I need another trip to Italy for a refresher course. I don't see the need to limit the experiment to a single cookbook, although that could be an effective way to do it, given the right book. Books I would recommend are: Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art by Shizuo Tsuji The Key to Chinese Cooking by Irene Kuo Classic Indian Cooking by Julie Sahni The Cuisines of Mexico by Diana Kennedy These books are similar in approach and format although about different cuisines and by different authors. They provide a solid foundation for cooking each cuisine. Again, I say that switching to another ethnic cuisine for an extended period of time is a fine idea. Here is a basic philosophy I've evolved: some cookbooks are reference books for techniques, nutrition, or how to make something, jelly, for instance. Joy of Cooking, Jane Brody, and Better Homes and Gardens fall into this category. Other cookbooks can give technique as well as provide a unique "taste bud experience". For me here are some of the books that fall into this category: 1) a 30 year old, probably out of print, Barbara Kafka book, the Microwave Gourmet, even when I don't do her recipes in the microwave her tastebud choices are so awesome, tasty, interesting that I pull out this book all the time to consult; 2) Emeril's New, New Orleans Cookbook (at least I think that's the name since I'm not at home), an interesting combination of flavors and techniques that I've learned that I don't need to follow every ingredient or technique exactly to create a great meal very quickly. I wasn't surprised at how good this cookbook turned out since I ate at his restaurant in New Orleans before he was famous and went back again in the same week because I was so impressed; 3) Gordon Ramsey's A Passion for Seafood for which I had very low expectations since I just knew him as someone who yelled on TV. This cookbook is also one that you can pull out techniques and ingredients without treating it as gospel and still come up with a meal that both family and guests will appreciate; 4) someone has already mentioned Julia Child's The Way to Cook and if you don't have anything else this is the one to have. My mother was a great cook and never used a cookbook and none of her recipes were written down. I was in despair that i would never be able to replicate her cooking. After I started using this cookbook I realized that dear Julia had compiled the wisdom of all our mother and grandmothers in one beautiful and well written book.

Omigod that photo of Santorini is gorgeous. What a great inspiration, and what a great idea--I think I'll look for places, too, instead of just pictures of kitchens for inspiration! And I really love that iridescent blue tile. A few thoughts: - Have you considered blue appliances? Or (this would be cheaper) a blue range with the other appliances being stainless or black (whatever you think looks good in context)? Fratelli Onofri has a blue 36" range (the Royal Chiantishire)--it's dark blue--and there are others in dark and/or light blue by, e.g., Aga (the Legacy), Lacanche, the Cornu Fe at Williams Sonoma, and of course special-order colors from Viking and so on. Here's the blue Fratelli: http://fratelliappliances.com/products.php?catid=1&pid=5 It's dark, so potentially a nice contrast with white cabinets and light blue accents (the tile). It's definitely DARK, though, so you may want to order color samples from Eurochef at that link(they send them for free). The Aga Legacy in blue is also dark, and about $2000+ more expensive than the fratelli. Prices just go up from there, but so do your options in terms of what shade of blue. - You'll also want some pops of gold here and there--something that makes you think of the sunset. Brushed brass fixtures, maybe? Or a few golden tiles in the backsplash? - I assume white cabinets is what you're considering. I wonder if there's a way to incorporate the curves in some of those Santorini roofs--perhaps in the style of the door, maybe a half-circle arch motif or something? - Others have already suggested blue counters. That would be GORGEOUS with white cabinets. - What kind of floor do you have? Could you do... let's see... very dark wood, like espresso, to look like earth, the surface of those mountains? Or maybe, depending how it looks with the blues you choose and the white, a Mediterranean-looking floor of terra cotta tiles with painted accent tiles? If you like the dark color idea, either wood or cork or linoleum could work . I love a good revived thread. :-) My good deals are all from eBay this time. My desktop computer is not quite four years old, but since it gets a lot of use and we believe in "lifecycling" electronics I've been casually looking for a good deal on a somewhat high-end refurbished PC to replace it. Before I found anything, my computer quit. Just refused to turn on. I researched possible causes, and called in my expert: my son. The power supply was a common source of the problem, so I bought one on eBay for $20. Nope, that didn't do it, but we kept the replacement in the computer and held onto the old one as a spare. Next we replaced the motherboard ($70 on eBay). Yes! The computer works fine at this point, but we figured since the hard drive has been spinning all these years, why not replace it--or add another, which is what we did--rather than wait for it to fail? So I bought a 1TB SSD drive on Amazon ($100), and now have a "new computer" for under $200. Also, I've been wanting an L.L. Bean tan canvas "barn jacket" for a long time but was unwilling to pay over $100 for it. Even eBay prices on them aren't usually tempting, but this time I found one for under $20 including shipping. I love it! It really is "like new," and I look forward to wearing it when spring starts to make an appearance. All I need now are olive green "wellies" for our muddy season.

I have one like plllog. I also have a clear plastic clipboard...cheap from staples. I clip the cut out recipe face down on the clipboard then flip it over...it's protected and the clip part tilts the recipe up slightly for easier reading.

This is the one I use. Sometimes I have to adjust the position if the "balls" interfere with print, but usually it is great. It easily holds a single sheet of paper or a thick book.

This is my second favorite. It only holds a sheet or two, but it is such a clever little dude. I have given several of these as gifts.

thanks for all the great suggestions, pics and links....

its has been so helpful.....love the rock, bellsmom !! too cute....that will be great for the newspaper recipes....

now, i just have to get organized with all my recipes....have so many and i am sure repeats of some.... ugh!!!

I use the acrylic one. For thin books or individual pages, I stick a not too thick hardback cookbook in and put the pages between that and the acrylic.

The downside of the acrylic stand is being awkward to store.

I might get the recipe rock as it looks like a simpler solution for single pages. Such a clever design with the curve to keep the paper from flopping down.
