Does anyone like magical realism in english

Hi,

I like movies like "Being John Malkovich" or "The Truman Show" that have farfetched/magical situations that reveal psychological or philosophical themes, and I would like to read books in that vein in English. I don't mean science fiction which is usually more about politics than psychology. Can anyone recommend books like that to me? I have written one myself that is a kind of Harry Potter for adults, called "The Wizard of Kew Gardens." I sometimes describe it as "George Costanza gets magical powers." The point is that it is a serious book, in which the hero learns about himself when all his casual evil wishes (and fantasies) start to come true. It has a realistic setting. I would like to know about other similar books. thanks, poetspy
