Guess who is a published poet? That will be me!

This morning I was notified that one of my poems will be published in a small magazine. I am even being paid! This is the fulfillment of a dream for me, modest as it is.

I have been going to a writer's group and received some varied responses to my poetry - from "that is complete crap!" to appropriate laughter and even some genuine interest. After attending a poetry workshop this fall and being encouraged to send out my work, I did so and it is a thrill to have an acceptance. An early Christmas gift.

Well done Siobhan. I always guessed there was a budding Milton/Shelley/Keats among us. No doubt the 'small magazine' is highly selective, prints the highest-brow offerings and is read by the literati from both side of the Pond. And pays in folding money . . .

Hi again Garden2garden, I have copied from wikpedia some info on thatching (see below). I'm afraid the palms don't have anything to do with thatching in England but maybe in tropical areas they were used for roofing of some sort in the past. My husband & I stayed in this beautiful cottage for a night, it is a B&B near Yarmouth I think. "Thatching is the craft of covering a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge, rushes and heather, layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof. It is probably the oldest roofing material and has been used in both tropical and temperate climates. Thatch is still employed by builders in developing countries, usually with low-cost, local vegetation. By contrast in some developed countries it is now the choice of well-to-do people who want their home to have a rustic look." Thanks for the rose names Jon, Roger had added 2 of them in the comments section on Flickr. They are roses that I have not heard the names of before so unlikely to be found in Australia although they are often known under other names so I will do some research. The photos of Stourhead I was very pleased with. I had visited there about 23 years ago in September I think but loved it and was very keen to revisit. I am so pleased that I was able to visit in May this time in 2004 as the azaleas etc were in massive flower. So many beautiful colours and stunning trees and the lake and the follies..I could wax lyrical but I need to go to bed. I'll add some more of the gardens I visited to Flickr in the future. Dear karl_bapst_rosenut, Mr. Zimmerman kindly clarified that his company, Ashdown Roses, is NOT being sold to another nursery. I am positive that forum members comprehend that Mr. Zimmerman is the owner of Ashdown Roses. Independent nursery owners are unsung heroes who are dedicated to educating masses, supporting the worldwide rose market, graciously providing us with roses to cherish in our gardens, and preserving our environment. Furthermore, forum members are wanting their favorite (and also addition of) independent nurseries in their specific regional locations so that they can indulge in the enthralling world of rose gardening. A silly and sweet tug-of-war of words ensued between forum members about where they want the independent nurseries. A few months ago, I met Mr. Zimmerman at the Heritage Roses Northwest (HRNW) society meeting in Seattle, WA. I was elated to meet a pioneer in the field of roses from whom I purchased roses for my humble garden. There were many attendees at the HRNW meeting who traveled from adjacent states. We joked (and secretly wished) that we'd love for Ashdown Roses to relocate to our region. Practical considerations such high shipping costs (which is regulated by the mailing industry) may be a blocking issue in purchasing roses from independent nurseries in distant locations. It is my belief that forum members do not have dubious or malicious intentions to destruct the reputations of independent nurseries. Thank you for sharing your concerns with forum members. I'll have to come back and look and the Peach and Pear Chili Sauce more carefully later. I'm in the midst of applesauce and apple butter. However, basically that's a tomato-fruit salsa with a good amount of vinegar, so my instinct is it's OK. But as I said, I'll look more closely and find some recipes to compare with in a bit. Or Dave or Linda Lou or someone might feel inclined. The Ball Complete Book is a compilation of all the best from Ball (U.S. Division), Bernardin (Canadian Division) and Kerr (the "other" canning supply company which was subsumed by the bigger corporation). Bernardin Canada follows the same USDA standards as Ball but tends to focus less on the "standards" and offers more ethnic and "gourment" canning formulas. The Ball Complete (Bernardin Complete on the North side of the border) is dual metric and imperial measures. I like metric and find that handy. Keep in mind Ball's main interest is in making money via the jars and other canning supplies they sell. Publishing the Blue Book is a way to promote their product. They aren't trying to cover every possible recipe; it's not in their interest to expend huge sums of money for testing of a lot of esoteric recipes. So each edition gains a few and loses a few. (I don't know who Ball's recipe testers are, but a few of their offerings have been real stinkers taste-wise.) So that fact that a chutney or salsa or pickle or whatever isn't in the BBB doesn't mean there's no safe way to can it. It just means Ball isn't bothering with it. Keep in mind there are also reliable specialists out there. Linda Amendt's preserves are fun, though she's too fond of liquid pectin for my taste. Except for the curds, which I alluded to previously, she offers some great recipes and some very helpful tips and strategies. For sweet preserves there's also Linda Ziedrich (totally reliable) and Madelaine Bullwinkel is A+++ by me. The Jamlady cookbook is also reliable and like a textbook for the art of jams and jellies. Ziedrich's first book was on pickles and provides a wide range of pickling options from traditional fermented to quick pickles, canned, refrigerated and freezer. She has a peach-Pepper Relish to die for. I think it's still posted on some thread or other. Ellie Topp's Small Batch Preserving takes canning in new and interesting directions. Because she is a food scientist, she has the skills to devise recipes just a bit out of the mainstream. So those are some of the options. Gotta go. Carol

I'm always glad when a Hoya gets a "real" name. Numbers are just too impersonal! Of course, sometimes they're so hard to pronounce that they might as well be just a number, but at least I can usually give it a nickname that helps me remember it's real name, but isn't painful to say. One that does NOT flow off the tounge for me is subquintplinervus (I'm guessing at the spelling right now w/o looking it up...) I call it "Sub-Q" for short... I'd probably call this one "Suri", becuase it looks like a mouthfull too! Denise in Omaha

The publication is called Lajoie, but it does not have a website. Hard to believe, I know, but I told you it was small! Of course I would like to frame the tiny check, but I will cash it and buy some little token. (Maybe I will take a picture of it first.)

I do have a grandiose plan to maybe publish a small volume someday in the not-too-distant future. I have a mentor who is very encouraging, a professor at a nearby university. She has told me that I need about 30 poems, preferably relatively short and on the same general subject. I've been working hard on that, and hopefully by this time next year I will have enough material to start getting serious. In the meantime I will continue to send out my stuff - for me the greatest incentive is to show people my work and get feedback. Last summer I got some really good objective criticism that helped immensely.

Most of my poetry is very dark but this one that will be published is almost humorous. I read it for my writing group and they laughed and seemed to honestly enjoy it, which surprised me as they don't usually respond well to my work. That gave me the courage to slip in an envelope and send it off. I suppose there is a lesson there!

It helped tremendously. For me, and I suspect for many others, nothing will motivate you as much as presenting your work to others. Reading my work in front of others is both scary and exciting, and hearing it in a radically different context than my own kitchen is more helpful than I could have imagined.

On another note, I have had a sad event recently - my brother died at the age of 45 after a sudden short illness. All of you mothers out there will understand that this was devastating to my mom. At the age of 77, she did not expect to experience the death of an adult child. Coming so close after this event, she was absolutely thrilled at this modest happening. I got my love of poetry and literature from her, both in my genes and in my upbringing - she read us poetry and had us memorizing it as soon as we could talk. So I am very, very happy that this gave her a bit of brightness in this sorrowful time.

How exciting, to have a poem published (and to get paid for it too!). Congratulations on your authorship. :)

On the other hand, I'm sorry for the loss of your brother. I hope that time will help heal the pain and you'll be able to remember him with happiness.
