How To read a Book

On other threads I noticed that some people do not read every word, but skim parts of a book. When I am researching a subject for an essay for example, I skim so as to find what is most important for my purpose. But when I read fiction and non-fiction for leisure, I always read every word written lest I miss something important.
So, to what extent is meaning lessened by skimming. Does fast reading of a text enhance comprehension? How does everyone read a book?
