My reading diary says 40, but I think there may be up to 5 more that I forgot to list. Fewer than I would like, and one of my resolutions this year is to read more and spend less time on the computer *g*

When I first read your post I thought how would I know?

However thinking back, I would read maybe two smallish book a week and then a long one would take me two maybe two. So I would maybe (with 52 weeks in the year) have read 40,don't ask me to name them!!!

If you asked me how many I had scrapped I would say I have lost count.

Thanks for reminding me. I meant to have a count at the end of 2009 from my local library where there is a list of my borrowings. I have read 102 and scrapped 5 apparently. I would also have to guess that I have borrowed another 30 from other libraries and bought 15 new and ex-libris OOPs to keep. Not to mention re-reads of books that I have at home when I cannot get to a library or settle to a new story. So about 150 if I include the partly read scrapped ones.
Of course, I can read a lot because I am retired and have to rest quite a bit!

I keep a log of books that I have read for the first time and books I have re-read. I do not note a book I abandon unless I get more than 50 pages in and the story makes some kind of impression, although I did not care to finish it.

First time reads: 71
Re-reads: 17
Abandoned but not forgotten: 9

Most books I read range about 300-350 pages.

It was a pleasure to go back through my reading log and count up my books. I totalled 72. The longest was 900+ pages and the shortest in the 150-200 range. I counted only books I read cover to cover, no books with many pictures of the coffee table variety. I also did not count any of the many volumes of poetry I read (at least 25). I ranged from a low of two books read in July (very sick DH, but he is completely better now) to eleven in November.

I have the distinct advantage among those of working folk of being able to get in an hour or more of reading during my work day without stealing from my employer.

My resolution this year is to write a small blurb about each book, something I have not done until now. I get most of my books from the library, and am often scrambling around at the last minute returning them.

I was very pleased to count up my books read this year and hit a nice, round 60. The majority were new-to-me, two were very slim graphic novels, and there were a handful of re-reads in there, as well.

I have started doing the annual statistical analysis of my reading. It isn't finished - I haven't, for example, tallied the no. of pages - but the total book count comes to 196.

Out of those, 57 were over 300 pages and 8 under 100 pages long. Only 4 re-reads this year, which is a lot less than usual. No real stinkers on the list this time, but 2 came quite close. On the other hand, I read 5 books that were really excellent, and 12 that were very good.

My proudest reading achievement is having read more books in my native language in 2009 than I did in the previous 5 years put together.

I read 60ish...I counted at least 60, but I know I reread some books this year and forget how many I reread. I'm actually surprised, I figured my count would come in lower. It's been a stressful fall and I've read less due to time. I normally read about 60 per year.

I found that I didn't read/listen to as many books this year as I did last year, but it was still a fair amount. I read/listened to 187 books. Of those, 105 were re-reads, 66 were audiobooks and 29 were nonfiction. Since my DH got me a 32 gb mp3 player for my birthday (replacing the 4 gb player I was using), I've been downloading a lot of books to listen to from my local library system. I can thus listen to the books while doing other things like housework, laundry etc.

According to my records, I read 37 -- just a couple of rereads. I consider that a pretty good year for me.

This was a good year for me too, partly because I signed up for the Booklovers Circle over at Delphi, which added 22 books to my list. I don't count pages, or re-reads, but I do count picture books (5 this year). My total came to 75 this year.

I never keep a count of the number of books that I read per year and doubt that I ever will, as it's just not important to me. I will hazard a guess, however, and estimate that I read, on the average, 2 books per week.

My log shows I read 116 books, but around 20 of these were Children's and YA books. This is actually pretty good for me. I normally average one big book or two to three small to medium length ones per week. I would imagine that 500 to 700 pages per week is somewhere close to what I would average if I tabulated it in terms of pages.

There are pros and cons to keeping a log, I think. I sometimes wonder whether tabulating, analyzing and over-researching reviews and hype on books I've read interferes with my enjoyment of them and that distinct and very private and personal relationship one develops to "the book". I do have fleeting thoughts that maybe all this tracking lessons the pleasure of letting the books wash over me -- a feeling I rather like.

Interesting that you bring up the point of whether tracking books interferes with the enjoyment of them - I have been wondering that myself. Am I too obsessive?
Ah well. It's fun being obsessive. You get a lot of reading done :-)

I started just keeping track of titles and authors, because it was just so frustrating to want to recommend a book to someone and not being able to remember the details of author, etc.

Sometimes I write something about the book. But not always.

The number of books was just curiosity. And now is kind of a way that through the year I can reprimand myself that I am not reading, and am probably spending too many evenings and early afternoons on this infernal machine.

I enjoy going back through the list occasionally, and remembering books...finding authors I might want to read another book by, etc. So, for me, I have found that keeping the record/journal increases the enjoyment.

I don't normally bother to count but am trying to take notice of what I do every day, like give myself marks out of ten for the quality of the dinner I made (never better than 8 as I am more of an arranger of food than a cook!) and keep a diary. It helps to exercise my brain.
The count I did for this thread was helped by the local library, listing in alpha order the titles I have borrowed, thus warning me of anything I have read before in the last 5 years since the program was set up. After some 60 years reading adult books, there is a huge possibility of re-reading, as you may imagine. However I particularly like Golden Age mysteries and can still find some authors I have overlooked.
Netla, did you ever get a copy of 'Penhallow'? I recall that you mentioned that you wanted to read it.

According to my goodreads list, I read 123 new books in 2009. I don't think I entered everything, and rereads are not included, either. Most were mysteries of 200-500 pages.

I don't keep a log, but I can estimate. Probably around two books a week, though some are re-reads. Do they count? I'm going to guess a hundred books.

When I was younger I read more, at least twice as much, and maybe more than that. Reading remains my favorite activity, but I also sew and garden a lot these days, and that competes for my time. I still read every day, even on busy days a little while before bed.

I read 136 books last year, about 40 less than the year before, but then I had three major trips last year and have spent a lot of the last month packing to move. I can feel my fingertips without touching anything. I think I've worn them out.

I startd my reading journal May 1, 2009. Since then I recorded 54 books. All new reads only. I know of two or three I forgot to write down but that is close. That comes to 21,186 pages during that 8 months. Can't wait to see how 2010 will compare.

Annpan, no, still haven't found a copy of Penhallow. I was looking for it because I wanted to read all of Heyer's books.

92 books for me in 2009, ranging in pages from 150 to over 1000.

I read 154 books in 2009 & don't count rereads only new books.
I did start The Children's Book also World Without End, but since I didn't finish them yet didn't include them in the count, but will carry them over to 2010-that is if I do finish them.
I try to not log a book until I finish it, but sometimes I forget to log them & find later that I need to add them, I am grateful that my library has a list I can ck to see what I have ck'd out, helps me remember!
