I'm not in love with them, but often if there is a new book I want to read, I can get it through the library much more quickly by reserving the sightsaver version instead of waiting for the regular print version. sneaky but legal!
I'm not sure if you are asking for title suggestions, or where to find them. Most libraries probably have a good selection-but you might want to also look at swapping sites like paperbackswap.com or bookmooch.com. Also, you can usually find them used if you look them up on abebooks.com or half.com.
As for titles, most popular titles are done in a large-print version.

There is even a book club for large print books, probably Doubleday. We subscribed to it for my mother when she began to lose her eyesight.

I don't like how heavy the large print books feel especially when they slip out of my hand as I am nodding out but I sure do like having less eye strain. I guess I was interested in finding some good reading in the large print. I get my novels from my local public library. If they don't have a title they will borrow it from another library.

I have noticed that the large print section in my local library has gotten much bigger so there must be a growing need. As the baby boomers get older..so will the demand for large print books. It does not bother me at all to read a large print book especially if the book is a popular bestseller. I have to wait weeks to get my hands on current bestsellers at my library.

Doubleday does have a large-print book club. Random House also features large-print books, I think.

I haven't had much luck with large-print books myself because they're too heavy and bulky to hold. I am a patron of Talking Books instead, and get all the books I "read" (listen to) through that library service.

jwttrans, Talking books worked for one of my aunts, but my mother couldn't keep from falling asleep with them!

She and all four of her siblings had macular degeneration and lived to be in their 90s. I heard my mother say to one of her sisters once, "If we had died as young as Papa did, we would have never known we had this disease." He was 72 when he died, and I thought the statement was pretty funny at the time; but now that I will be 72 this month, it doesn't seem so very old at all.

carolyn_ky, I know what you mean about tending to fall asleep while listening to a book. I do that often too, because I listen to them while lying down, intending to turn the machine off. But I fall asleep first, and the machine turns itself off when it reaches the end of that side of the tape. The next time I want to listen I have to find my place again.

If I listen while sitting or standing, though, I don't go to sleep. I always try to go back over the part I slept through. If I've paid attention, it's fairly easy to find my place on the tape.

New, more modern machines are in the works, I understand.

To return to the large-print books: Years ago I worked for a small publishing house, G. K. Hall & Co. in Boston, which published large-print books. However, I don't find any Website for them online although I found quite a few large-print books produced by G. K. Hall.

My 79 year old father is scheduled for cataract surgery in September, but right now, the print in regular books is too small. He has pooh poohed large print, but my mother happened to find one on a "take one leave one" bookshelf in their adult community and he realized that yeah, this might be good! So I went on abebooks, searched for an author he had recently mentioned and put large-print in the keyword section, and found tons. I ordered two from a vendor who offers free shipping, and voila! Two books, less than $15. Late Father's Day present on its way. (He told us not to get him anything-they just downsized so "stuff" is not welcome.) Once he has read them, he can add them to the aforementioned book shelf, or donate them to the large on-site library. I'm sure large-print books would be welcome.
You just need to know how to read the used book lingo-i.e. fine is better than very good, etc.

Oddly, I actually hate the large print books. I am certainly of an age to consider them, but I got one accidentally--a book I really wanted to read. It annoyed me so much I had to take it back and waitlist for the regular one. It wasn't the bulk so much--just the print and the need to turn pages so fast.

That's interesting isabeaux. I'm uncomfortable with them too. I feel like the too large print makes me feel a little dizzy. On the other hand I find the very small print in particurally older paperbacks is hard too. But if these are the only options for a book I really want to read I've managed to slog thru.

I do find that I need to hold them differently-different distance and a different angle for the multi-focals.

E-readers like the Nook and Kindle have adjustable print and are easy to hold. This might be an option. Huge selection, obviously.

I actually find large print books unpleasant to read. Something about the ratio of print to white space bothers my eyes.

Fortunately I don't actually need them. I was so profoundly nearsighted before my LASIK surgery that when I became farsighted, it was pretty mild. My eye doctor said that it will probably never get bad enough to need large print books. I'm grateful for the silver lining to that particular cloud.

Several years ago I reserved a book at the library, and when I went to pick it up, they gave me the LARGE PRINT version. I was slightly offended that they thought I was so old I needed LARGE PRINT. But actually, it wasn't too bad. The only thing I don't like is turning the pages so often.
