A Faithful Book-Into-Movie

I've been disappointed with most books made into movies. But recently I watched a movie that was different, It was very faithful to the plot of the book. It is "The Great Gatsby". I found the 2 main male characters (Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Tobey McGuire as Nick) very good-just as I imagined them when I read the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald back in high school. They physically looked like the characters I imagined. Plus both are good actors. I recognized many lines of dialogue from the book "The Eyes of Dr. Eckelsberg", etc. Very satisfying. Anyone else have an opinion about this movie?

Have not seen this re-make, although I loved the book. However, I would like to mention another film that I think was very faithful to the novel: "One Day", taken from the book by David Nichols. I thought the characterizations and settings were pitch perfect -- very satisfying.

I watched the1995 BBC adaption of Pride and Prejudice yesterday after having re-read the book recently and almost every speech was taken straight from the book. I've watched this Colin FIrth and Jennifer Ehle version many times but never before listened so closely to the dialog.

This is difficult to narrow down. Here goes: Book: "To Kill a Mockingbird". I read it at least once a year. Song: "Till There Was You" , Beatles. DH and I used to sing it to our babies. He would play it on the guitar and we would both sing. Maybe that's why they went to sleep so quickly-to escape our singing! Movie: Dr. Zhivago. On a snowy night DH and I went to see the movie and were only a handful of those who braved the storm to see it. It was in an old theater with the red velvet drapes around the screen. In a long flight on the weekend, I watched Where'd You Go, Bernadette? It was pretty close to the book. Something that I didn't like in the book (an unnecessary complication in the husband's life), was omitted in the movie. In that sense, I liked the movie better. The visuals at the end of the movie (a building being built), give a much better idea than the book does. Most of it was filmed in Pittsburgh, a couple of scenes in Seattle, and some scenes in Antarctica. IMO, for those of you who have read the book, it is worth watching the movie. But it will not show you the Seattle five-way intersections that Bernadette hated.

Cyn, not sure why you're disappointed, although it might not be cleaning up at awards season, being recognized with nominations is no slouch and Green Book was nominated for Oscars in Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Film Editing and Best Screenplay. Nominated for Golden Globes in Best Actor and Best Director, Screen Actors Guild nomination For Best Supporting Actor, and quite a few more nominations by other organizations! I loved it, my daughter felt it was derivative and shallow. Agree that the plot was rather hoary however I thought the acting was superb. If Mahershala Ali doesn't win an acting award at the Oscars *I'll* be disappointed.

How about Notting Hill? OK so it is a rom-com but Hugh Grant, he of the floppy hair and boyish charm, does run a travel book shop, even if the 'plot' doesn't hang about the stacks too much. Please say some of you saw it way back in '99. Notting Hill Trailer

I must add that this time I switched off the Swedish subtitles. It is often too tempting to use them when watching foreign films.

The seventies version of The Great Gatsby with Robert Redford stuck quite closely to the book - and had a more sensible soundtrack, too....
