Anybody get frequent nose bleeds?

For years I've had frequent nose bleeds from one nostril. I've had to be ultra-cautious when blowing my nose. Even the gentlest attempt could result in a bleed. It happened all year round, but was especially bad in the winter, when I could count on at least one occurrence per day. I didn't pursue cauterization because it sounded awful and isn't usually a permanent fix.

This year, for the past couple of months, I've had zero nose bleeds. It really is quite remarkable, so I looked into what might have caused this dramatic improvement. When I had Lyme disease this summer, I upped my supplements--mostly to pay more attention to my health in general. In the process, I added one supplement I'd been meaning to take for years: Bilberry, to prevent macular degeneration. It turns out that Bilberry also strengthens blood vessels and capillaries. I think I found my cure!

I'm passing this along in case someone else is plagued with nose bleeds.

Thanks for the info. I had a problem for a couple months or so this summer, but now it has stopped. I never had it before then, so I am not sure what caused it.

I get them occasionally in the winter, when the heater is on and the air gets dry. Hubby doesn't like the idea of a humidifier for whatever reason, so we don't have one. They seem to go away when I use Vicks around my nose at night. I guess that helps keep my nostrils moist.

Hi have you thought of keeping a log on the effectiveness of moving particularly frequently?? I grow mostly epiphytes and then mostly orchids . Almost all will grow in very dense shade in fact frequently better . What they don't do is flower well.lol Too much sun and they at least stress at worst sunburn. I keep a log as each plant goes into it's flowering period. How many flowers nd particularly what quality was produced in a given amount of foot candles. I have generally found moving them is counter productive they adapt to certain amounts of light so I never move more than twice a year. A log will give you a lot of info on what works. Even full sun plants that have been grown in shade will often croak when moved suddenly in full sun. I think the magic number is around 3 weeks of steadily increasing light before full exposure. My grandson turned 4 in April. He started the NT exactly as you described around 3. He seemed to have more episodes when he spent the night at our house than he did at his own. One thing I noticed (since I had him sleep in my bed with me and I am a light sleeper) he always started out by snuffling his nose as if he couldn't get air, then the thrashing, then the screaming. I was convinced it was a breathing issue, although Oprah had an entire show on it and it is supposedly just a brain thing. They said on the show that you should not try to wake them up, just keep them from hurting themselves and wait it out. They don't remember it and it is NOT from a nightmare. It occurs in the stage when you are not yet dreaming. I understand how scary it is when it happens but my grandson seems to have outgrown it too. I remember thinking if I didn't know he had a good life i would think he was being abused or something. He just spent the night lately and he snuffled and thrashed a few times but never did the whole screaming thing. His mother (my daughter) has always been a sleep walker and talker. We had a heck of a time waking her up sometimes. (another bizarre thing on Oprah that day, was Sleep Eaters! People actually get up , raid the kitchen and have no memory of it-not kidding-they filmed them and they were mortified) Hang in there, but you might have a while to put up with it.

Shabosbaby... We jump on people in this forum because we are passionate and on the same token we could all benefit from obedience training so we learn not to jump :-) Free advice, you know it's take it or leave it. Some of it you'll like, some of it you won't. In forums, you can't complain about the advice because you didn't pay for it but When I started asking pet questions on the net as a newbie I got jumped on and the comments not only stuck with me because they were memorably obnoxious, but I wound up learning a whole lot from the passionate loudmouths. If you feel like dirt by some of the replies here then just picture all the loudmouths throwing tomatoes at you next time you almost not crate the dog when you can't watch him. As mentioned it won't be long until you can gradually test the waters and give the puppy more freedom and it will be such a relief on those times when you come home and everything is just the way you left it. They grow up so fast. Instead of trash, crate the dog with safe chew toys like kongs and eventually when you ahve to leave and the dog starts looking for something to do, they go right for the chewtoy out of habit, not the trash or exploring for cushions to rip apart. (called chewtoy training)

I am just now getting back due to bad weather we had to unplug the computer.Ashley had several nose bleeds after she came home and last nite.No she did not pick her nose.What happen ,she has always had them.With all this pollen,her sinitus is bad,her nose drys out,and her blood vessels are really weak.We are planning to see a ENT doctor because since she has them so often.Thanks from the bottom of my heart for ALL who replyed to this post.You have been very helpful.We had to throw away her good shirt since it was so bad covered.She got very sick to her stomach.Yes she did panic and Greg [my hubby] told her to try not to panic because it made her bleed worst and he talked to her several times over the phone assuring her she would not die over this.I was told also to go to CVS and ask them if they sell something you can shoot up her nose to stop it.Someone just told us they do sell something that she could carry in her purse,that would stop it right than.Thanks again for ALL your help.She goes to the tanning bed but we told her not to go today since she could get it bleeding again getting hot.Yesterday after they got it to stop bleeding,she is going to dog grooming school,she got hot and it broke loose again.So that is why we do not think she needs to go tan today.

Both my sons had similar issues. One was so bad we had to take him out of swimming classes because his nose would bleed. He thankfully, out grew them. Our other son is now almost 23 and still gets them, I will let him know about the supplements. Thanks for the info.

Not anymore, I learned the hard way to keep my fingers out of my nose. I had to have a bleeder cauterized one time and believe me you don't want to go there. The doc told me there is only one reason for a nose bleed....picking your nose. Now I use Vaseline to moisten the inside of my nose.

LOL I think your doc was a little off-base, Vala. My right nostril was so ready to bleed at any moment......there's no way I would have picked at it.

Good to see we don't have many nose bleeds at the KT!

I'm with alisande, Vala. It certainly is not true in my case, either. I've had frequent nosebleeds all my life, as do my maternal aunt and one of my sons. One nostril, like Susan's.

My doctors have never been concerned about it. I am, but only because of the embarrassing mess! When I was working, I kept my pockets full of tissues, and boxes of tissue hidden around my library - nothing worse than being caught off-guard with a bunch of high schoolers in the room!

I'm going to look into Bilberry today, Susan! Thanks!

LOL, Alisande I agree with you. 'Picking' is not something I do while awake, so I seriously doubt I'm doing any while I'm sound asleep.

You may have bleeders, that is what I had. I had one of those stick sponges in my nose for a week before they cauterized the bleeder. Would never do that again, it is still there. The ER nurse said it was the worst nose bleed she ever saw. I probably needed a pint after that. Not necessarily blood. LOL

He was a ear and nose specialist????

Vala, I hope you recheck this thread. I was just reading Dr. Peter Gott's column in today's paper, and he mentions that putting Vaseline inside the nose to keep the nostrils moistened can lead to Lipoid Pneumonia. He said the Vaseline can run down the back of the noise and be swallowed, and Lipoid Pneumonia could be the result.

I had chronic nosebleeds as a child- ages 2-12. As a kid/teen, I thought maybe I "had too much blood" since they stopped about the time I started having periods, lol. Almost always on the left side- that is also the side where I have sinus infections (never had one on the right side) and have a "weird valve" between my tear duct and sinus cavity.

No idea what caused them but by the time I was 4-5, I could take care of them by myself (they were almost always at night). I still get them but not the "dripping, washcloth covered" versions. Will have to check out your suggestion.

Yes, i have one now. It seems I get them more in the winter during the heating season, and the air is so dry, This seems a little early to be getting one, I just blew my nose. I just wad up a piece of tissue and stick it in for a while.
