My 13 yr. old dd gets them all the time, really bad, too. I believe she has a bleeder and we need to get it cauterized. To stop them, we just have her tilt her head down and press the nostril on the bleeding side. If you tilt it back, the blood drips down their throats and most young children gag on it. Just apply pressure for a few minutes. It should stop.

That's what my son does (what Orie said). Mike has gotten them all his life, it doesn't take anything to start them.

Another important part that is often overlooked is the person with the nosebleed needs to expend as little energy as possible, so sit or lie down with the head as the highest part of the body so gravity assists, and the person must calm down and not panic. Steady, controlled deep breaths. Why? The faster the heart is pumping, and the higher the blood pressure, the more pressure to promote the nosebleed. Close her eyes, think calming, happy thoughts. If she's prone to panic that will work against her. With any type of bleeding, calm down, decrease the heart rate and blood pressure. Sometimes the people around make it difficult for the person though!

Have her lie down. Put an ice pack on the back of the neck or forehead or any other good spot on the head. It should help it stop. Then tell her not to blow her nose for a few hours.

You have good advice here and you might want to take this time to tell her what the specialist told me. There is only one cause for nose bleeds and that is picking your nose. Except of course in the case of rare diseases, but then you would more serious symptoms. My son was so upset over having a serious he never had another one after he heard what caused it. His nose had to be packed and that left a stick hanging out of his nose and everyone stared at him.

I had frequent nosebleeds as a child. They were spontanious -- just happened. No 'nosepicking' involved. Treatment was an icepack at the back of the neck, lying down with the head elevated.

If they continue, consult an ENT about possibly cauterizing a (probably weak) artery in the nose.

Mine stopped at about age 10.

Nothing dangerous about nosebleeds far as I know; just messy.

Had them from age 2 to about 12. Almost always at night while I was asleep. Would wake up to blood all over my face, arms, and bed. Never found out what caused them but found out other relatives had them too. May be a hereditary thing. I have since been diagnosed with a rare form of anemia, might or might not be linked, no one knows.

After about age 4 I would take care of the nosebleeds myself. Would get up blow my nose real good a couple of times, clean up and then get a wet washcloth. I would crawl back in bed, prop up on a pillow, put the washcloth across my nose, breath through my mouth and go back to sleep. By morning, it would have stopped, my nose would be VERY stopped up and I would taste the blood for a while but I got used to it.

After letting the blood run out to a point then I would stuff tp or cotton in that part of the nose. It would usually dry up but had to be careful about really hard blows I have to agree about picking that side of the nose (the scabs that is )

I had two real bad ones which really scared me as it was just a few years ago after I had retired. I am on medication for high blood pressure and did not realize that there are certain food suppliments that are blood thinners and this is apparently caused mine. I started to take Q-10 to help my memory and after checking it out, it is a blood thinner. Now I read everything. Friend had it and each time ended up in ER having her nose packed. You might check to see what vitiams/minerals etc she is taking. You can also ask the pharmacist/doctor.

I've had severe, spontaneous nosebleeds all my life. Since I'm 61, that's a long time. They seem to come in cycles: I'll have 20 or 25 over the course of a week to 10 days, then nothing for maybe a couple months.

For me, they are nothing but an embarassing nuisance. I can't tell you how often people's eyes have bugged out of their heads when my nose bleeds while we're just sitting there, talking. For no reason at all, ever. Suddenly, just a rush of blood.

And during the weeks that my nose is being trouble, nothing seems to trigger it, either. I can laugh, sneeze, cough, go on rides at the amusement parks, swim, do whatever I like, but nothing triggers it. Then, for no apparent reason, it starts.

My pockets and purse are always stuffed with tissues, just in case. When I worked in the HS Library, the kids thought I was the nicest librarian in the world because I kept tissues all over the library! Ha! It's awful to be standing in front of a class and have a flood start.

I can't tell you how many pillowslips and garments I've wrecked. And, yes, I've discussed this with many a doctor. There is nothing wrong, and nothing to be done about. I'm still hoping to outgrow it. One of my kids is in the same boat.

This is all my rather long-winded way of telling you not to worry.

She should see an ENT doctor. Probably is just one or more weak blood vessels, and if so, the weak vessel should be cauterized (5 minutes in Dr's office)or else she will get more nosebleeds.

I've had my nose cauterized. Twice. "Lazerized" once. Didn't change a thing. I'm in the middle of a "spell" right now. But, who knows? Maybe it'll help her, maybe she'll outgrow it.

I am just now getting back due to bad weather we had to unplug the computer.Ashley had several nose bleeds after she came home and last nite.No she did not pick her nose.What happen ,she has always had them.With all this pollen,her sinitus is bad,her nose drys out,and her blood vessels are really weak.We are planning to see a ENT doctor because since she has them so often.Thanks from the bottom of my heart for ALL who replyed to this post.You have been very helpful.We had to throw away her good shirt since it was so bad covered.She got very sick to her stomach.Yes she did panic and Greg [my hubby] told her to try not to panic because it made her bleed worst and he talked to her several times over the phone assuring her she would not die over this.I was told also to go to CVS and ask them if they sell something you can shoot up her nose to stop it.Someone just told us they do sell something that she could carry in her purse,that would stop it right than.Thanks again for ALL your help.She goes to the tanning bed but we told her not to go today since she could get it bleeding again getting hot.Yesterday after they got it to stop bleeding,she is going to dog grooming school,she got hot and it broke loose again.So that is why we do not think she needs to go tan today.

One more quick tip: I had them all the time as a kid and my mom would put Polysporin (or Neosporin) up my nose with a q-tip when the weather was dry, to keep my nose moist. It did seem to help, as I recall and I never had to have the cauterization. Yes, do remind her that it takes waaayyyy more lost blood to send her to the er than she would imagine. The amount of blood lost always looks bad, but is rarely a concern. However, if she is having them every day or so she might want an iron supplement. Good idea to take her to an ENT. My DD had nosebleeds almost daily until I took her to an ENT and got the blood vessel involved cauterized. Now she has a recurring yeast infection thatr just won't go away, tho she's been given at least four courses of medication for it. It's always something, as Emily Litella would have said.

"She goes to the tanning bed..." Good lord, that's much more serious than the nosebleeds! Talk to any dermatologist about the damage that exposure causes! (She won't see the damage for years, but then...it's scars at best and death from skin cancer at worst.)

I thought of another possible cause for nosebleeds: dry air. I never had nosebleeds as a child except in winter. We had forced air heat. That was in the days long before humidifiers.

Best not to swallow the blood; that will make her nauseated.

It is very hard to keep my fingers away from my nose when my nose is dry. I only use Neosporin when I have a sore inside other times I use Vaseline. I am afraid if I use Neosporin all the time I will become immune to it,s benefits.

I know a 70 year old who has hadd recurring nosebleed periods for years, after a couple, goes to the ENT and gets the offending vein cauterized, and then is good for a couple of years...maybe.

Dry air is a culprit, he sleeps with a humidifier and that does seem to help.

The real culprit, however, is weak veins, and no one outgrows that.

I get nosebleeds all the time from one nostril. Like Monica said, a weak vein.

As soon as I realize a bleed has started, I blow my nose hard. The site linked below (as well as many other sources of expert advice) says in part:

Before you try to stop the nosebleed, blow your nose hard. This will remove any clots which are keeping the blood vessel open. After getting the clot out the elastic fibers surrounding the vessel will contract around the tiny opening.

One more thing I like to add,I agree with you chisue.I have talked to I am blue in the face about how she should not go to the tanning bed.She will soon be 21 and she thinks she knows better.What is bad too she has a bad mole on her back that needs to be removed.Its big and turns black at times.I stay so worry about just this.But what more can I do when they get this age,but pray.
