Tell Me How That Makes You Feel: A Therapeutic Environment
There's something so appealing about the therapists' offices on television. Watching Betty Draper on the Mies Barcelona Daybed with her dreadful psychiatrist, all I could think about was how much I loved his office. When watching Dr. Melfi on "The Sopranos" I am constantly wondering if that dancer sculpture on her windowsill changes from week to week. Watching Gabriel Byrne on "In Treatment" makes me think about the transference issues I'd have if he were my shrink.
As someone who is obsessed with design, I wonder what it is about these therapeutic spaces that draws me to them. Though I probably should, I've never been to see a therapist, and I wonder what their offices are like in real life. I bet they don't compare to the ones we see on TV and in the movies. I found myself searching for images of the type of space where I would completely relax and open up. I guess what this means is that if you have some furniture fit for the Barcelona Pavilion, be warned: I'm going to spill my guts when I come over!

Poor Betty. Right after she has these sessions, complete with chain-smoking, her shrink calls her husband and tells him everything she said.
This is a great conversational spot. Whoever is on that daybed is going probably going to open up to whomever is sitting in the womb chair. Perhaps they'll do that therapy where you remember back to when you were in the womb...
I love the humorous sign in this dining area!
Ah Dr. Melfi. Here is where she practiced before she had to go on the lam.
This sculptural chair elevates the legs for maximum relaxation.
In reality, I think I'd be too scared to get this beautiful daybed dirty to ever actually sit down on it.
Relaxing with a beautiful outdoor view. This one reminds me of Monk's therapist's office. Lord I watch too much TV!
Deep conversations will be inspired by the view and the lovely and balanced interior design here.
