Question..about the pyrex dishes. Are you talking about plates and such?

I didn't even know they ever made such a thing...but I found a set at a thrift store...and bought them for my daughter for a Christmas gift. She loves things like that.

Some of the plates have the red ring, some yellow , some blue and some the green. Just like the bowl sets used to have...I can't wait until she sees them.

No, I wouldn't shop there either. Next thing they'll say you can't have pockets in your coat or pants either. The store I used to work at would ask that you leave your back pack behind customer service. I refused to enforce that rule because some women have purses bigger than a back pack and they were never asked to leave there purse behind. Nor were the people who came into the store with shopping bags from other stores.

It was a really large building, so I'm sure the no purses rule was to stop theft. I'm sure people still stick things in their pocket or up their shirt. Maybe the 'no pockets, no shirts' rule will be next? :-)

The Pyrex I bought was the small lidded casserole dishes in a pretty turquoise color (see the link - although mine are a little taller). Made in 1959 too! How perfect! lol I think your DD will love the plates - I know just what you are talking about.. they are very retro!

Obviously, there are spare keys to the lockers, in case someone loses one. Given what retail workers are paid, I would NOT trust that there was no possibility of one of them helping themselves to my wallet. I've worked too many places where there were light-fingered people working alongside me, I know it happens and wouldn't want to make it that easy for them.

Sounds interesting...haven't seen anything like that here.I've been known to stick my checkbook in my back pocket and leave my purse in the car. Hands free is a good thing in those type stores! LOL I am afraid of bumping or catching my purse on something breakable! (and spendy!)

I wouldn't give up my purse,even if I had the "only" key to the locker. I would take it out to my car and lock it up, then return to the store area. . This policy would NOT work around here.

There are many of the Antique Malls around this area that do that....especially on the weekend. Personally, I think it is wonderful! I usually leave my purse in the trunk and just take my debit card with me. You don't have to worry about knocking anything over with your purse as some of the areas are pretty tight. I am sure that it started for the shoplifters tho....that is why our local one started it.

My daughter was a manager at a trendy clothing store (for high school/college age clientele) for several years and the 'kids' that worked there were allowed to bring purses to work ONLY if they were made of clear plastic. Same reason... to stop shop lifting. Only in this case, by employees.

I wouldn't shop there either. I won't allow any store to check detain me to check my receipt either. The only exception is at a membership store like Costco. Anywhere else I just smile and say "I don't participate in that program" and keep on walking. It constantly amazes me how sheep-like people are when it comes to having their rights violated.

I wouldn't give up my purse. It's too much trouble replacing things like DL, CC, etc. in case it gets stolen. I usually carry too much cash around to feel comfortable letting it out of my sight. Not to mention my cell phone. Nope!! Wouldn't relinguish my purse.

I'm not trying to play devil's advocate, but do you have any idea how much money these stores lose to shoplifters? Small stores, 10s of thousands of dollars a year. Large stores, hundreds of thousands. And that all gets passed on to us, as consumers. And there is very little the stores are able to do to fight it. I'd check my purse and allow my receipt to be checked any day in order to help fight the shop lifting epidemic that is going on all across our country. Ok... stepping off the soap box here.

It sure wouldn't bother me to shop there ... I think it's a good idea! I oftentimes see women with humongous handbags banging around when they go through aisles, and in a shop like that the merchandise at risk isn't easily replaceable if it's knocked off the shelf.

Personally, I rarely take my purse shopping anymore. I keep credit cards and drivers license in a small leather business card case, and just stick that in my pocket. If I take cash, that goes in another pocket. Hands free is wonderful!

I've never seen the bag lockers but I understand why they are there. If I liked the shop, I would shop there, but I would leave my purse (which is a fanny pack) locked in the trunk of my car.

The owners are just trying not to get robbed.

I have that same Pyrex bowl and have had it for ages and probably got it in a "quarter" box at an auction.

If you accept having to lock up your bag then the next step would be no coats,no full sleeves,no baggy clothing,no wheelchairs,no strollers etc. It is not that expensive to set up cameras to watch for shoplifters that can be monitored at any desktop computer.

Stores and shops have to take responsibility for securing their goods. It is unfair to treat each and every customer like a potential criminal. They need to be willing to confront,arrest and follow through on prosecuting the real criminals who cost us all with higher prices etc. That includes people who allow their children to play with things,open sealed packages and make items unmarketable. I'm tired of having to take responsibility and pay the costs for other peoples refusal to be held accountable.

I was somewhat offended first at the thought of being told I couldn't carry my purse (Did they think I was a thief?!!), but felt very safe leaving my purse in the locker. It was right at the front door in full sight of several employees and customers. The employees told me there was only 1 key to each lock. I locked the lock myself and unlocked it.. so I knew it was the right key. I don't doubt that they did have emergency spare keys somewhere, but that would just make sense.

This was one of those rental space malls, I'm sure the no purse rule helped to keep the antique mall full. I only saw 1 empty space among hundreds.

There was a clothing store in our mall, it might still be there. They had a policy like that. When DD & I walked in and were told our purses had to be locked up, I told them never, and walked out. If they are still there, they no longer have that policy.

In Nov. & Dec, I rarely carry a purse. Too easy a target at this time of year. And NEVER leave your purse in the car or trunk! Especially if someone has seen you carrying it & then sees you without it.

There is a dumpy thrift shop here that requires you to put your purse in a clear locked cube if you use the fitting room. Since there is only one fitting room, sometimes I change my mind on items if there is wait, but the purse policy doesn't bother me. Their store, their rules.

I have been to a couple of estate sales with this rule. This does bother me because there is nowhere to leave my purse but the car. Thieves around here think nothing of shattering a window in broad daylight. I hide my purse and still carry my wallet.

If it was a store in my town and I went there regularly, I would put cash, license and 1 cc in my "wristlet" and just bring that in (I do the same thing when we go hiking or something similar). But if I was just stopping by the area (as we often are when we go antiqueing), I wouldn't shop there. I wouldn't leave my purse in a locker and also wouldn't leave it in my car.

There are a few antique malls in my area that have the lockers. I know the lockers are there and I don't mind locking up my purse.

Remember the lockers are there because someone was stealing. The store owners aren't locking up your purse to irritate you, they are trying to cut down on the amount of stolen merchandise. A dam shame.

You can always take your wallet out, before locking your purse up.

But if I were to go to such a store for the second time, I would lock my purse in my trunk before heading there (that way, no one can observe you in their parking lot).

Nope, no matter what those of you say who say it's a good idea say, you haven't changed my mind. EVERYONE is a potential thief. Actually, the vast majority of thieves I've dealt with are men: who don't carry purses at all. If the store has this policy because someone knocked something off the shelf with their purse and it broke, then they need a "we break we cry, you break you buy" policy. My elbow could just as easily knock something off a shelf. What are they gonna do? Duct tape consumers arms to their bodies? And my purse is so small, only a pack of kleenex and my cell phone fit inside of it. I could fit more in my coat pocket than I could in my purse. I refuse to leave my purse in the trunk of my car. What if my car gets stolen? I don't have a wallet. My purse *is* my wallet! I use all the slots that are in it, rather than a wallet. Odds of my losing my ID and credit card are greater if I have to take them all out of my purse and put them in my pocket than the store losing anything to the inside of my purse. LOL And trust me...........I didn't take too kindly to the remark about store staff not being too trustworthy. having worked retail forever, I know that staff usually steal from the store, not from their customers.

What a wonderful opportunity for thieves.....to get at a bunch of lockers where you KNOW there's gonna be some handbags.....locker locks are so easy to open even a high-schooler can do it without anyone noticing something's happening.

I agree with Debby. Everyone is a potential theif, and if it's okay for one store to insist that you lock your purse in a locker, why can't they all? I would not put my purse in a locker.

When I was in college, I worked for a bookstore. The manager decided to not let anyone walk around the store with shopping bags or backpacks. She made us approach each customer and take their belongings and put them behind the counter. Even back then, I felt this was wrong. Now I really know it is.

Although I suppose preventing small items from being lifted might be one reason to lock up a purse, I think those that said bumping and knocking valuable items that might get broken by a slinging purse at your side would be a bigger concern. I have often placed my shoulder bag in front of me while browsing stores like that instead of having it at my side.

I've shopped at antique malls with the same "lock up your purse" policy and I always enjoyed shopping there. I feel safe, unencumbered and I had no problem with their policy. If I did have a problem with it, I would simply do what I usually do anyway and just carry in a credit card and phone. I've had my purse slide off my shoulder before and go swinging and it always gives me a fright if I'm in a store that has fragile items.

I also lock up my belongings every time I get a mammogram, too. There are just some times that not carrying junk around makes life a lot easier.

Interesting, and I too think the reasoning is probably more to guard against breakage than theft. When I worked at the jewelry store we all held out breath when a woman with a big bag slung over her shoulder would approach the Waterford department.

Our local grocery store has instituted a policy of refusing service if you will not allow them to search your handbag every time you go into the store. Allegedly this is to cut down on shoplifting but, as others have pointed out, there are dozens of other ways you can get stuff out of a store without using a handbag. They don't insist that people turn out their pockets, or lift up their shirts.
So, I have instituted a policy of not shopping there any more. I refuse to shop in a place that has a policy of treating customers as thieves until proven innocent, when I have been shopping there nearly 25 years and it's a small town where most people know each other. It's a bit of a pain because the nearest store is 25 miles away, but I just plan ahead.
I have heard that they found four staff members stealing goods, and a male customer who stuffed his pockets full. So, where was the handbag there?
No way would I leave my handbag in the car or a locker.

I was fine with the idea of locking it up in an antique store. But I am appalled at the IDEA of a store searching my purse every time I go in there..I believe that could be considered sexual discrimination..after all how many men carry handbags? So only females are being searched?? I don't think so..

I have never heard of such a thing and would not shop there if I had to leave my bag behind, especially with a toddler and soon-to-be baby!

I used to shop at a couple of thrift stores that did not allow handbags. When I planned to go to those stores, I just put my wallet in my pocket, instead of taking a purse.

Another store did not allow tote bags. I never shopped there because I walked past it only when on my way home from work, when I always had my tote. (I wondered if they asked folks with brief cases to stay out also.)

I haven't been to any stores that don't allow purses, but if I wanted to go shopping there, I wouldn't let that stop me.

Add my name to Stoney's that is just what I do too. I don't have a problem with it. Also, like Flamey said. I lock my stuff up getting a mammo and often there is some husband or friend left alone in the sitting room with the lockers. Never had a problem. Shopping with my hands free would be great.

Sheesh. Who on earth suggested that you should be leaving your wallet/CCs/DL in the locker? Are they really permanently attached to the purse? Discriminatory against women? Oh come on! Sorry folks, there is no constitutional right to carry a purse in an antique shop.

One thing that certainly would be helpful is people coming forward when they see shoplifting and following through instead of turning their heads and saying I don't want to get involved".

I'm reminded of how Archie Bunker said he could stop hijackings. Just arm all your passengers. There wouldn't be any more air-superiorority there and they would be afraid to pull a weapon. All the airline has to do is hand out the pistols at the beginning of the trip and pick them up at the end. Case closed. My cousin's idea was cheaper and simpler. Everyone flies naked. Hard to hide weapons for most people anyway.

Yes it would be nice for a store to have one employee or more per customer to keep an eye on them. I'm sure someone would protest that they're being watched. And are you ready to pay for it? I doubt it.

I guess I don't know what's in those purses that happens to be so critical that you must have it on you everywhere. Even a beesting kit, insulin or something justifiable could be carried on the person.

Now having someone have to check out twice like at Scam's Club is something to complain about. They can watch you come through the stupid checkout. They're not checking purses, totes, fannypacks, pockets, etc. That's one reason I won't shop there.

With all the purse-snatchings and the like I'm surprised so many people insist on keeping every valuable item they own in them. A quick slice on the handle and run or a robbery - either way it's gone. Someone just the other day left their purse in their car in plain sight and it was stolen. It's truly sad that our society is this way, but good grief, it's not a surprise. People break into cars to steal GPS units, laptop computers, purses and more all the time. It's easy pickings. People have to start learning about crime prevention.

Worried about people breaking into the lockers to get the purses? If all that's being carried is Kleenex and diapers, there's only one kind of thief I can think of who would be likely to go after it.

Exactly. So to treat everyone the same is neither discriminatory nor unrealistic. The idea mentioned earlier about using the cameras isn't totally practical. Proactive crime prevention is far more effective than reactive crime solving. Plus there's those who argue that they shouldn't be on camera.

Now the one that searches the bags BEFORE you go in is strange. Unless they're concerned about weapons? That one doesn't make sense to me.

Now I will say it really annoys me going to the lumber yard and having to have your entire vehicle searched when leaving. That's a bit excessive. Sorry folks, can't fit 4x8 sheets of plywood in the trunk and close it! Not that I totally object to the "search" but more concerned about the extra time delay.

Say what you want, any guy that has had the "hold my purse!" done to them would sure appreciate a locker. I finally told my one GF that if she's gonna be carrying horseshoes and a pony in that thing she can carry it herself! How can Kleenex, a wallet and car keys weigh 85#???

AS cynic says, hate having my car searched at the lumber yard. They tried going through bags that were from other stores last year at Christmas time. How can i put boards or lumber in a shopping bag. We have a police scanner and most of the shopping lifting we hear is at Kohl's store.
