Delicate gross situation resolved

Thanks for the help and ideas but it all got taken care of while I was on vacation.

Well I went back to work Monday and found that not only I but at least 3 other co-workers had left notes or talked with the supervisor about the picker-flicker. I am so glad it wasn't just me who saw and disliked the action. After having that many employees actually make a complaint she was obligated to talk with the person. She asked the person into one of the private rooms where we are coached in regards to our work performance, thus very quiet and private. She apparently tried to be as diplomatic and kind as possible, going about it according to the training she was given, but the person was just outraged that anyone would say such a thing. It was a lie and there was no way that happened, wanted a face to face with the (censored)accuser and a written apology from the company owner and so forth. Apparently she did not tell picker- flicker there was more than one complaint. The person basically conducted itself in a very rude, vulgar and inappropriate manner before and after leaving the private room. I was told there was quite a scene, with the police having to be called to escort the person from the building and off the property.

I'm very glad there was no physical violence and no harm done to the supervisor. She is a great boss type and a sweet caring friend.

I'm glad I missed the drama of the whole thing and Monday was a very nice day not feeling like a target.

I'm still convinced people do this subconsciously. I bet this person really didn't believe it had done such a thing.

Glad it's over and you didn't have to deal with it yourself.

mboston, I am very sad to hear your dil lost the baby. Personally, I don't believe the chemicals won't hurt pregnant women or their babies, and it would have infuriated me to hear the guy say such an inane thing. I'm not blaming the chemicals for the miscarriage, but I know they are very toxic. When I was pregnant with my second son and dh and I were renting an apartment near Fort Benning, not far from Florida (he was in the military then), renters who had filthy living habits moved in above our apartment. They moved out a few months later without giving any notice and were gone a few weeks before the landlord realized it. In that period of time, their apartment became a roach haven - it was horrible. And of course when that apartment became empty, the roaches all came to live with us - YUCK! I spent many evenings spraying and swatting them, then I began to feel sickly, was having problems breathing, was having nightmares about them, so I had to quit. At my next OB visit, the doctor told me NOT to be anywhere near any roach-killing chemicals. The landlord ended up calling a professional exterminator (yes, he should have done that right away) and also put us up in another apartment until the roaches were gone. I think my doctor's written statement motivated him to do that, as I was still in my first trimester. It seems the seller should bear some (the lion's share, actually) of the responsibility in this case. I would check into your local laws to see what can be done. You've already received great advice about how to kill the roaches. I do hope this is resolved quickly.

Yes to controlling the food intake and separation at feeding time. Even with smaller amounts IF she eats too fast and the problem continues, try putting/mixing in rocks (about several inches in diameter) with her food. I can assure you she WON'T eat the rocks, but will have to take time to move them around to get to the food and it will slow her down. Do watch closely though the first several times and adjust number of rocks/size to determine what works best. Had to do this with my horse once who was bolting food during rehab from surgery. Worked like a charm....in fact, I think she missed the ROCK GAME after she recovered!

Thanks you guys for the suggestions. After grossness the laughter is good and makes the uncomfortable a little easier to deal with. Grandson suggested (besides the large can of disinfectant spray he got me for Grandparents Day) I get another desk size box of tissues and put a sticky note on it that says "Do you know how to make a tissue dance?".................... .. then on a second sticky note write .. ..............."Put a little boogie in it!...........Yours please!" He said he'd even print it out for me so no one would know where it came from. LOL What a kid, always willing to help gramma. I do know the other cubicles facing the same way can see the picking and flicking because they have mentioned how gross the new person is. I kept my mouth shut hoping another would say something to the new person or the supervisor. Anon note hopefully worked and I won't have to deal with the situation. This really was the bad point of my whole vacation. If worse comes to worse and the flicking continues I guess I'll be the person to talk to the flicker and hope it is taken well with a nice box of soft touch tissue. If it continues after that I have a video camera and good options 1. Take pic print it off and put it on pick-n-flicks desk. If the flicking continues 2. Take proof to HR and/or the VP. This must be a man thing DH and DGS both said "Boogers never go away, they just dry up and get hard." eeewwwee but yes I have purple gloves and scraper if they want samples to go with pic. 3. Grandson knows how to post to U-tube. 4. Close circuit it to the big TVs in the break area. LIL

Hi guys, thanks so much for all the responses and for sharing your thoughts/experience - it's almost overwhelming how helpful everyone is! So last night I ran a load with gel, and there was still grit but less of it. It could be a one-off result, so I'll have to try going back and forth between tabs and gel to see if there's any consistency. The good news is that the cleaning seems to be back to normal (other than the grit) - the past week or so I'd have to rewash certain dishes, and it seemed to be getting worse and worse. Looks like cleaning out the filters and grinder area did something positive there. ci_lantro, interesting that you recommend that. When I was running a load with vinegar I opened the door shortly after it filled and noticed that there was some foam, which surprised me... I figured it was reacting with detergent residue. I'll definitely try drying out the grit and experimenting with how it reacts to acids. As for aerators, I did not check faucets, but did swap out a shower head fairly recently and there were no issues there. The plumber was also surprised by how strong our water pressure was, so doesn't seem like it's bad enough to clog anything.

I'm guessing it isn't going to show up in your annual evaluation that you didn't take the initiative to handle this "minor" situation yourself. **Snork** Sorry, couldn't help myself there, Lil.

Sounds like the "The Flicker" is a bit off their rocker. The reaction does seem over the top & that is a bit worrisome, imo. I don't see how it could be unconscious: picking it out, examining it, then flicking. Habit... yes.

Glad you won't need to dodge missiles any longer, Lil.

But - who'd want to go to all of that trouble?

And do it without being observed ... (and, probably, sworn at?).

See, junkie - you got a bonus, along with the vacation: problem resolved!

Vanished! Disappeared into thin air!

Or ... is she coming back? Diplomacy doesn't seem to be her long suit.

If this unbalanced individual was escorted off the premises by the police because he had been fired, I certainly hope that you have security that won't let him back on the property. With the rise in workplace violence, especially after people have been fired, I would be extremely vigilant. Glad the slob is gone, but I would watch my back. Never know what he could do to exact his "revenge".

Yes the flicker is gone permanently. I'd say imbalanced is a nice way to describe the person by the reaction. I wish it had been a different scenario but people reap what they sow. There is talk of a new agency taking over the evaluations of perspective employees since this is the 3rd strange/out of proportion and the police had to be called in, incident to happen in the last 7 months. The agency being used now was contracted a year ago. Before that evaluation and hiring was done in-house.

Yes the workplace is safe for the most part. Because of the work my company does this building is very secure and it takes a key card to open any door. There are reminders often to not let anyone into the building unless they scan their own card. The parking areas are well lit and have cameras in key positions. Anyone leaving can ask for escort to their vehicle and that will be taken care of with no problem.
I know there will be more than one person with issues but there has to be at least one more great person to co-work in peace, cleanliness and harmony with our small (35 people) department.

Oh, that's unbelievable about it being done unconsciously. Everyone in their right mind knows when their finger is up their nose, please! lol They just don't care and they don't expect anyone to call them on it.

I'm so glad it's taken care of now. I hope it's all over and there's nothing left to deal with. Well, nothing a good floor cleaner and scraper can't handle! lol

An author (medical writer) being interviewed on "Fresh Air" a few days ago said nose-picking happens on an average of five times an hour. (The interviewer was appalled to hear this, and I must say I was a bit startled myself.) She didn't say anything about flicking. LOL
