Germany trip-fourth set of pictures

This is my favorite castle, they don't allow pictures inside, though. The same family has owned it for hundreds of years.

This was one unpleasant part of the trip, it was very hot day and there were other Americans in the tour group with little kids, kids who hadn't been fed apparently (from comments made by the parents) and it was the afternoon...a time when babies/toddlers should be napping. One of the family's kids whined and screamed through the entire tour, making it hard to hear the tour guide. He was getting frustrated, you could tell. When we finally got to the end, the stupid mother made a comment about how they ought to have air conditioning in the castle to make it easier for people.

Great castle pictures!

So, for my info, and asking: Is there a place that the buses drive to, like a parking lot, and then you have to walk a distance to get to the castle?

Were there any carts for handicapped?

Is that King Von Ludwig's Castle, Bavaria, Germany, We were there in the late 90s?

Neat... Those concrete slabs and the thing that looks like a concrete boat in pix 9 and 10? I think those are part of the British Mulberry Harbor and pier from the D-Day Invasion. The Allies needed a harbor in which they could land supplies for the troops after the invasion, but the established harbors were very heavily defended by the Germans. So, the Americans and British simply built two very functional harbors called Mulberries. They were towed across during the invasion, and after the beaches had been secured sunk and set up. Unfortunately the American engineers focused on speed rather than securing the sections of the harbor. They wanted to get it in operation as quickly as possible, while the British and Canadian took the time to properly secure their Mulberry. The American Mulberry was almost completely destroyed in a massive channel storm shortly after the invasion. The British Mulberry, while heavily damaged, was still usable.

Mtnwomanbc, it was the hotel St. Louis-Marais. The staircase in their picture looks wide, but it's actually very narrow and kinda slanted. The carpet on it was filthy. We weren't too far from the river and Notre Dame. Danielle, that was the girl's room. Three of us stayed in there. The boys had their own room on the main floor. The only rooms in Europe that accomadate 4 people are the youth hostels. They occationally had triple rooms, like this one so to make it cheaper, Judy, my co-worker shared with me and Lauren. I don't ever plan on going back. The whole area where we stayed smelled like urine. It was gross.

Glenda, there is a parking lot and they have vans that drive you to and from the castle for, I think 3 Euros each way. We walked coming down but it was so hot and humid we decided to take the van back, that is, us girls did. The boys had left without us and walked back up. The van only takes you to the end of the road, though, not along the cobblestone "road" leading to the castle. If you look at the 4th picture, see where that group of people are walking down the road, in the forefront of the pic, it looks like the road ends at that little wall, but it continues down to the castle, only it's cobblestone, not asphalt. The van takes you to that low wall right in front of those people, and then you have to walk the rest of the way. No carts.

Ronm80, no this is just off the Mosel River. I'll add a link at the end of this post. If anyone ever goes you should walk through the forest, not go down the way we went, the other way is so much nicer and when you come around the last corner and see that castle in the middle of the forest, it really is magical.

I agree, small children should have snacks/water etc and disaplined. I find myself saying something that I should not say. It is not fair to the group or guide.

I am going it may take another couple years with the kids going to college and cars etc...but I am going and so excited Lena and Andy have asked us to come for years and stay with them and be our tour guides.....you have really made me want this to come true thanks so much Kathleen....Stacy

Stacy, you should go, especially if your friends are letting you stay with them. Lodging was the biggest expense we had. Flights can be very cheap right now if you keep an eye out for when they go down. A lot of the things we did weren't expensive at all.

Where do your friends live?

So Kath, did you drive to each of these sites yourself? How did you find the driving.

Why on earth people think other people should be subjected to their children's noise is beyond me. I wish the guide had had the power to ask them to go outside or leave the group until they could be quiet.

(I KNOW kids are noisy and stuff, but if you're on a tour (or at the movies) with others, be considerate for Pete's sake! And feed 'em, sheesh!)

Zeetera, yes I drove everywhere we went...well except for once we found our hotel in Paris. No way was I driving there until I absolutely had to. What a nightmare coming and going. I love to drive so it wasn't too bad, just tiring by the end of the trip. Judy, who came with us didn't drive until the last couple days she was there. I tried to get her to drive us out of Paris but she wouldn't do it-LOL! It only took us a couple hours to find the highway out.

Most of the driving wasn't too bad, but there was a lot of construction going on and tons of traffic near all the major cities so it was a lot slower than I had planned at times. They have rest areas all along the autobahn in both Germany and France with clean bathrooms, most have restaurants, park like areas too, lot of Burger Kings too. It was really confusing around Hahn airport/former U.S. base where I was stationed. They had made one of the main roads (50) into a four lane divided highway and 327 seems to have been broken up into more than one section of road, so I kept getting lost and having to refer to the map. Otherwise it wasn't too bad and can be fun driving over there.

I can't believe that people could be that inconsiderate to their small children. Not to feed them or let them nap? Jeepers.

What an amazing place! I sure wish that my family owned a castle, LOL.

That's such a great looking castle. Great pictures of all the different stone works. I'm sorry the bawling kids kind of ruined it.
