The other day I posted a recipe for Thai Chicken and Cashews.

It sounded terrific, but we both agreed that it needed something more. It was lacking some ooomph.

The hot chili sauce I use is really hot, so it wasn't that.

I want to keep it and try it again, but if anyone here makes it, please let me know your suggestions to give it more pizzazz.

Thanks for the up date. This recipe really appealed to me and was going to try it when I get back to cooking. I've been on a little sabbatical. I'm trying to cut back and lose a little weight. I was so depressed when JD (my dog) died that I gained 15 lbs. That was a year ago and Georgy has been with me for eight months. It's time to get serious about this. No more excuses. So if you tweak it, let me know.

Gee, jasdip, that sounded so good I bought cashews to make it. It sure sounds spicy enough. Just checked and I have chili oil--not chili sauce, so I added it to my list.

Funny - I was just thinking about this over the weekend - planning what and how much we should can this year. I made some elderberry-port wine jelly and it makes a great sauce for meat. Melt some, add some broth, thicken and serve with grilled steaks or filets (we eat a lot of venison and this flavor goes wonderfully with that). It would be good on pork, too. I've started putting up most things "plain" - beets, tomatoes, peaches, cherries, etc. so I can tweak them however I want when I open the jar. Instead of jam, I make fruit chutneys instead. Rhubarb, gooseberry, cranberry and plum so far. DH loves them with meat or on a sandwich, and if I get my once-in-a-blue-moon craving for a PB&J, I just use one of the sweeter chutneys. They work for both sweet and savory. Great with a fruit and cheese plate, too, which we have for dessert a lot in the summer. I still make some jellies and jams, but mostly for gifts, so I make small 4 oz. jars, which everyone loves for Christmas. I finally used up the applesauce from last year. We don't eat it by itself, so I use it in quick breads (any that call for a cup of vegetable oil, I substitute 1/2 cup of applesauce for 1/2 of the oil).

Thank you for an informative post and all I can say is "wow" you did some testing! Most people tend to ignore heat buildup but it's something that does need to be considered. I don't want to get into any of the LCD/Plasma debate, but over a wood burning fireplace, Plasma will tend to attract more smoke and dust to the screen due to the operating voltage level of the display itself - similar to a CRT. So it may be necessary to clean it more often. Also, if it uses a cooling fan and filter inside the rear of the cabinet, that may require occasional cleaning of the air inlet filter. Hope you're already enjoying it!

Thanks, Lee! I've been very happy with my almost immediate recovery, as I was expecting something much worse. Since I have no pain, I tend to forget that I just got the implant, and so I have to remind myself to be careful. I had a sandwich for lunch, and I hope bread crumbs didn't get stuck back there. I rinsed out my mouth very well. I make bean burritos frequently and always have the ingredients to make my bean dip recipe. I used up the last of the tahini making the hummus (which I expect to go fast), and so I'll have to remember to pick some up at the next Arab or Lebanese market I go to. We need more lavash, but I can get that anywhere. The tahini is much cheaper at the Lebanese market. Annie, Kevin and I both have mouth guards to wear at night, and I never ground my teeth until fairly recently. I do notice myself doing it when I'm working intensely on a furniture model. I'll make a note not to make popcorn, but that gets stuck in my teeth even when they are normal! I might make some Avgolemono soup with Greek meatballs - I have frozen ground turkey I could defrost, but I need to use up the poached chicken meat first, I think. The Mincemeat Recipe and Results

Here is the Mincemeat Recipe from my English friend, Marjorie: Freezer Mincemeat 1 1/2 lbs. raisins 8 oz. golden raisins 12 oz. currants 2 lbs. tart apples 4 oz. mixed peel (the same type used in fruit cake) grated rind and juice of 2 lemons 6 oz. shredded beef suet 1 1/2 lbs. sugar 1/2 t. allspice 6 TB brandy, rum or sherry Mix all ingredients well in a large bowl. Leave overnight in a cool place, then mix well again. Freeze or refrigerate and use in baked pies, tarts or cookies within one month. Her tarts were made in mini muffin pan cups with pie pastry lining the cups and a lid of pastry on top of the mincemeat, then baked.

I went back to look at the recipe and the only thing that I can think of to add a little zip is to use sesame oil instead of regular oil. But since I haven't tasted it I really can't tell. I need to get peppers, too. But at $3.99 each for red or yellow peppers I think I'll stick with green.

Hi Patti
The chili sauce I bought is in the Asian aisle and it's called Sriracha hot chili sauce. It's a tall plastic bottle with a green pointy cap. Hot as anything.

Sesame oil might help as well. I'll add it to the soy and oyster and chili sauce. I don't want it to be so hot that there's no flavour, but it needs something and I'm not sure what.
I bought a yellow and red pepper, they were on sale this week. Are you like me, and pick up each pepper till you find a "light" one? I'm not paying for seeds and core. I always buy the lightest weighing ones I can find.

I bought cashews as well. Unsalted. Maybe I should have bought salted? I put lots of veggies, so don't need to add any more. Hmmm. Let me know what you did to yours.

jasdip: If I was making that recipe, I would add about 1 T. fish sauce, 1 - 2 t. rice wine vinegar or lemon juice, and either chopped cilantro or shredded basil or Thai basil at the end.

I buy a similar take out dish at the local Thai restaurant and they have pineapple tidbits in it. Although they aren't spicy, they are a nice touch.

In general, I don't like meat and nuts together. I don't like eating meat with the crunch. Too unpleasant. I love Chinese food, and like Thai, but I avoid dishes with cashews, almonds, peanuts added , Though I will eat them separately. And I love peanut butter. I have had Chinese noodles (lo mein) with peanut sauce, as long as there are no chunks in the sauce.

Try splitting a jug of Jack Daniels 1/2 hr before eating... it'll taste just *great* and have all the ooomph you want!
