Step lightly on her toes and shout a firm "NO", then get into HER space by walking into her and bumping her. Worked for me. Now I shall cover my head with a sack as pet lovers will stone me for even mentioning stepping on her toes. Oh well....

I would hold her mouth shut with my hands for a quick second and say NO BITE firmly.
I never had that problem with pup, but I use it with NO BARK and hey sometimes they even listen! LOL

PLEASE do not step on the puppy's toes. We had that happen to a dog of ours several years ago by a neighbor that we did not know was doing this. We could not figure out why our dog became more aggressive every time we tried to either take something out of the paw or trim the nails. He never told us, but another neighbor did. That dog learned to hate those two people and we had trouble the rest of the dog's life. The toes are very sensitive.
Reaching down, and maybe saying--NO BITE etc makes more sense. Ask your vet or a good pet shop for additional help.

What worked with Ruby and Max so far, is to STOP moving, bend over and use your hands to hold the puppy in place away from your foot and say "No biting". Don't move and keep holding until the puppy calms down. Note that you will have to do this for quite a few minutes and re-do it immediately when you take your next step.

But eventually they get the idea.

My problem is, bad puppies are so cute that sometimes it is easy to accidentally encourage the behaviour.

The way I have dealt with puppy biting is to yelp very loudly each time the puppy nips, whether the nip actually hurt me or not. This should get the puppy's attention away from the moving feet. Make the yelp sound like the noise a puppy makes when it gets hurt.

Immediately after the pup looks around to see what made the noise, I would give the puppy an allowed chew toy and when he/she takes the toy, I praise with lots of 'good dogs' and pets. You might need to keep a basket of chew toys to carry into whatever room/yard the puppy is in. But this has always worked well for me.

A good way to establish who's 'top dog' is to firmly turn the puppy on her back and hold her down until she accepts the correction. It doesn't hurt her or make her mean. It's what dogs do to one another to assert dominance.

Oh puppies are such a challenge.
EVERYTHING they do is delightful...until they grow up.

It delights us when our cowdogs heel us as that is what they are bred to do. We do insist they only get hold of our pants and boot heel. Any deeper bites gets the 'no!' or 'be nice!' while their head gets pushed down. Pushing the dog's head down establishes that you are the alpha member in the pack. If you've observed a mama dog with her puppies, this is what she will do when one of her puppies cross the line.

Deliberately stepping on a puppie's feed isn't a good idea. In fact, it's down right mean as well as stupid.
It's best to reaction to their behavior as the head of the pack would do. The alpha member does NOT step on toes.
The dog views his toes being stomped as an attack and will react. Who can blame them?

I do a 'ack' sound, a sound that sounds like the 'wrong answer' buzzer on game shows and they all respond very well to it. They'll stop what ever they are doing when I make that noise.

Does it all come together over night?
Heavens know.
This is where consistency comes into play.
Decide on which noise/command you are going use and stick with it and do it every time.

Are you saying that I am mean and stupid, LORI? I think you are NOT here to see how I step on toes. Actually, my vet taught me to do that with a border collie we had that kept nipping us. It wasn't like we were stomping on the dogs' toe. Making statements like that when you are NOT HERE to see the example of "stepping on toes" is just mean and stupid.! Mirroring your exact statements back at ya', Dearie!! Over and DONE!!!!! My dogs are VERRY well taken care of thank you very much, and well trained.

How does the dog react to a squirt gun? Often it'll startle them enough to get their immediate attention, accompanied by a firm but normal voice command of no or whatever. Training animals is often like training kids, when people do it, as yelling isn't necessary, in fact can often get an undesired effect. You don't have to yell to be firm and in command. Yelling is for distance, not impact.

Only after my reply to Sandy's requestion did you explain your method of stepping on toes. And in your first post you admitted the expectation for some comments about your method.

If you knew your method was unorthodox and would be commented upon, why'd you bring it up? For that matter, if your method is so successful and you feel secure in in sharing, why so defensive?

Perhaps this is something you should have clarified in your original post?

I agree with the "yelp" noise that dances mentioned. That is how the mama dog teaches her young that they may be hurting her when they nurse. Amazingly, I tried it with our little one and it really does work.

I guess in my first post meaning lightly means stomping to you. As far as me expecting comments, yes, there are always those that disagree with someone, but some people just are always rude. Mean and stupid is not just disagreeing it is attacking the person as a whole. As far as ME looking for trouble, I am not the one on here that usually makes rude comments to others. Thanks anyways. I was just taking up for myself. I love my dogs and they are well taken care of you and you hurt me by insinuating I was mean and stupid. Yep, I lashed out. I am not a mean and stupid person. I have a spray bottle with a little bit of white vinegar in it. When Sushi bites me I spray in his direction but not in his face. Dogs don't like the smell of vinegar. I also say "NO" while spraying the vinegar water.

i just taught NO BITE my pup wasnt after me he was after those dumb leopard print slippers i had!! lol but boy did he love to wait outside the bathroom when i was taking a shower, stick his nose under the door with his butt in the air and whine omg did he whine lol. thn hed teach mom a lesson because i closed the door on him, then he used to chase me up the hall "play biting" like he was a st bernard or something lol gosh i miss him. sorry i just meant to say i always said no bite, but he new when i was serious and when i was playing.

Hi Everyone! So I decided to take the plunge and join the GW.
Thanks everyone for your advice. We have puppy training class tomorrow so I am going to make sure I bring this up to the trainer to correct this before she graduates. I will definitely try the options that have been put out for me here, I hope something works. The vet warned me about the "dumb puppy stage" (not that she is dumb, she would just rather play then learn/listen right now) where they forget everything you have taught, and she has definitely entered that stage. Hopefully my patience will pay off. But I knew this would happen so we will get through it.

I have to say that stepping on a dog's toes is not smart- not that anyONE person is not smart, just the act. First of all, how can you control not stepping too hard on a jumpy dog's little toes? There are fine bones down there that could get snapped so easily. I have a Border Collie and Husky and when you correct them, they don't stand still, they kinda skitter around and cower. Even barefooted I'd hurt them trying to get to their feet, LOL!

Both of our dogs are so obedient, but the Husky sasses. :) He KNOWS who the alpha is in the house, but he always would yip back after we corrected him with "NO BITE!" then he'd turn tail and run. It was so comical, but forcing the head down is the only thing that stops him from nipping.

i read in a dog training book years ago when a dog keeps jumping up on you step lightly on thier toes.

sorry this is not meant to inflame anyone here its jmho, but no way would i step on a dogs paws to stop him from nipping. i stepped on my dogs paws enough just doing the dishes, cooking, laundry etc and not know he was there and oh my gosh, you wouldve thought i was beating him. it hurt him bad. we dont know what they feel..we dont like our feet getting stepped on, so imagine how a pet feels. please im not trying to make this into a debate, thats just my opinion.

Lori, thanks so much for your advice about pushing a dog's head down. I did that to Sushi all day yesterday whenever he tried to bite me. He always barks loudly when he tries to bite and today I noticed a decrease in the barking and biting. I know it will take longer than a day to get him to learn that biting and nuisance barking are not acceptable but it is a great improvement.

With all animals it's best to imitate what that species 'leader of the pack' does to keep respect and order. The alpha will demand submissiveness by physically holding the other pack member down. Demand may sound a little harsh but that's nature and of course the level of the force of the 'me alpha you no alpha' approach depends with the size of the dog. You don't treat a puppy or a small breed as a large or older dog.

I've never had a dog that didn't respond to the hold down and say 'no' method.

Sushi is a smart dog.

When my puppies would bite, I'd yell "Ow" and push them away from me. Always works. Negative reinforcement. Of course praise them when they don't bite, pet and tell them how good they are.

I agree do not step on puppies toes. YOU can really hurt them alot. You can step on harder than you think.

YOU don't teach them by hurting them, you use words and yes, you take their mouths in your hand gently and tell them to STOP IT. Just make sure you use the same words over and over and eventually they will learn. It takes time but just like kids it will get to them and they go, oh, I'm not to nip. If you don't nip it in the bud now, it will be worse as they get older. You also don't want them nipping kids or guests that come to your house.

Make sure that everyone knows how to do that and say the same words that you are going to use to stopping it.
