Need pics of your front yard please

i have a clean slate finally on the front side of my house.....and looks like we willbe working in state this summer so what should I do....it used to have a dog woood tree and azealas in the bed but I want somehting not so structered so care to show me yours?? It faces the west and gets sun/part sun due to large trees......any ideas and pics I wouod love...Thanks stacy

Stacy, besides cycling I don't think I did much besides gardening since I moved. Here are pictures of what it looked liked when I moved in, and now.

Oh Kath, it sounds like you've already planted those alberta spruces. I think this is a mistake. Your front entry is so pretty...really a focal point of the house, with the stone, the columns, the beautiful color of the door, and the side windows. Why, in the world, would you want to be put clumpy, bumpy, lumpy, dime-a-dozen dwarf alberta spruces there? Dig them out and put them somewhere else where they are not "specimens"...include them in a planting with more elegant beautiful things and they actually can be an asset. DON'T obscure the best feature of your home. Remember, you are dressing your home like you dress yourself. Show off your best feature. Think of it this way: say you have a beautiful, graceful neck and collar bone. Show them off with a lovely, fine, delicate necklace of diamonds...don't cover them up with a clunky, boring, bought-at-Walmart acrylic scarf. I know that the thought of digging up plants and moving them is a pain, but it will be worth it. (By the way, I'm the plant-moving queen. My neighbors joke that I don't look at home without out a spade in my hand. I'm ruthless that way. And, believe it or not, I've never had a plant die because I dug it up and moved it.) You could dress up your front entry with a large (and I mean good-sized)pot of beautiful annuals. Or you could go the trellis and roses route on the side to the left, with a shrub rose off the bump out to the right of the door. If you want beds at the end of the driveway, make them large enough to fit the shrubs you plan to plant there (kept low enough to see over, for safety) and think about the shape of the adjacent lawn rather than the shape of the beds. In particular, pay attention to how you will mow along the edge of the beds without leaving awkward corners or bits that have to be trimmed by hand. Think of the position and placement of the tree and any shrub plantings in relation to the house. You want to use them to enhance the appearance of the house, while using them to make the transition from tall house to flat lawn seem less abrupt. Make the house "nestle" into the lot. You don't neccesarily need beds out at the end of the driveway, and may be planning them because other people have them, but without a real purpose. They do "dress up" the driveway entrance, but you want to call attention to the house/entry, not the driveway. Unless your border continues up the driveway on the right side and curves around to lead you and your eye to the entry, it only distracts from the house. As they are, they are too small to make a "grand entrance" and may only serve to increase your maintenance chores. If you use the juniper to hide your trash cans, try to use a couple more elsewhere in the planting plan. A one-off plant can tend to call attention to itself, defeating your purpose.

So far, the Tall Fescue has appeared to do very well. It could obviously be better, but I honestly just did not do anything with it the first summer I was here. I am going to add some seed to it this year as well as add some fertilizer. The Tall Fescue is under two pretty large trees so I never had an issue during the hottest days of the year. I really like the grass as well as it stays green all year long. Even after we had 3 inches of snow fall, when the snow melted, the grass was still green. As I mentioned, I am going to be actually working on taking care of the lawn this year, so I expect to see great results!

Here's mine. The flower bed continues in an L shape to follow the road for a bit.

Rember the saying about perenniels-the first year they sleep, the second they creep, the third they leap. It will be much fuller next year, looks great already. I love the look of raised berms.

Mine is pocket handkerchief size. We moved in a year ago (June 9th) and started from scratch. We're really happy with the way it is coming along.

It did need a trim when these photos were taken, so please overlook the shaggy grass.

Right now, the tulips are finishing up. Then the hostas will take over the display :-)

Everybody's yards look great!

Here are a couple plant ideas. The front of our house faces west/south.

These are coral bells aka heuchera in the Plum Pudding variety.

Pacysandra with a crab apple at the end.

Both of these plants looks good all through the year, they don't die back. Easy to care for too... I ignore them and they look great. lol I would like to add a few taller shrubs in there one day.

That sedum spread like crazy. I don't know the name. I guess there are thousands of varieties.

Moni-we went to Tahlequah (don't make me look up the spelling)last weekend. Ate at Sam N Ella's and the friends we stay with, she works at Greenleaf. Did you ever see that place? Amazing. I wondered if you interned there for your classes.

Here are a few pics of my west-facing, zone 7 garden in East Texas.

All the landscaping is kept close to the house to minimize my work load.
