Pomegranate juice, anyone?

Sam's Club was giving away samples of pomegranate juice the other day. I asked the woman behind the cart what it was supposed to be good for, and before she could answer, a male customer rattled off all the wonderful things pomegranate juice does for him and his wifeÂeverything from increased energy to an improvement in their sex life. (Overshare!) They each took one ounce of the concentrate every morning. The woman dispensing the juice smilingly agreed with what he had to say.

I tasted some, thought was good, checked out the price, and went home. The next day I Googled pomegranate juice and found this little article from WebMed. I figured the juice was worth a try. I found the concentrate online at Vitacost.com for less than Sam's was selling it for. It's delicious!

Anyone else throwing down a shot a day (of pomegranate juice)? :-)

I'm not familiar with jujube fruit, but I have run the Omega 8003 juicer for some years. Any hard pits should be removed first if the juicer complains at all. A seed that you can easily bite through would be OK. For juice, the Omega works best on firm/hard items like quince, carrots, rhubarb, etc. It also works well on fruit that is basically all juice to begin with covered by a membrane (seaberries). Putting things like grapes or blackberries into this juicer results in puree, very little juice (maybe 20% by volume) is produced. Goumi berries resulted in puree. The Omega would not produce much if any juice from a fig or blueberries, for example. You can play around with the 0-1-2 adjustment on the screen retainer piece and try different exit caps (they have different hole sizes) and see what happens. Fruit puree can be quite useful.

I just had another Angel Red. It was a big beautiful red fruit, but the flavor was lacking (and it was not as sweet as I remember it last time). It's hard to say whether this is indicative of the variety, since there are so many factors that can affect fruit quality and flavor. Maybe the fruit should have been left on the tree another 2 weeks to ripen. But on a more positive note, I found this review on TropicalFruitForum.com: "Parfianka is considered by many as being the best tasting but this year, my first year with fruits, the Angel Red tasted better than the Parfianka. The Angel Red was sweeter and had better sugar acid balance to my palate. The Parfianka tasted like a Wonderful with very soft seeds. This could be because my trees are so young but remember that everyone's palates are different." - posted by simon_grow, December 27, 2013 - From what I have read, Angel Red is not really an exceptional variety among pomegranates, but it is an exceptional variety among the pomegranates that are ready to harvest in September. Therein lies the appeal of Angel Red to commercial growers, it is an early-producing variety; it's better than any other pomegranate variety commercially available in September. Anyone ever grow pomegranate's?

Hi, I live in the far North (Canada) and would like to grow a pomegranate in a pot because our winters are long and the days are short. I see many of may neighbours of Mediterranean descent who have fig trees, which leads me to believe that using the same method they use to preserve the trees in the winter, the pomegranate could also survive. Has anyone grown them from seed? Is so, How do you go about it? do the seeds need to be dried or fresh as when you open the fruit? Can anyone give me some instructions? I'm completely new to the art of getting plants from seed and would need to know basic methods as well. P.S. please do not suggest I run to the nearest nursery to get a plant, I wouldn't find it because these plants are only for the adventurous and under normal circumstances would not survive in this cold climate. I live in Montreal and winters can be dreadfully cold but summers can also be hot and humid, so maybe I would be lucky. Thanks everyone! Happy St- Valentine!!!

Don't know what kind of juicer you have, and the seeds won't hurt any quality juicer, but remember to get all the skins off as they are terribly bitter. The seeds are also bitter but my juice tasted good. Remember also that your juice from pomegranates does not seem to last as long as other juices in the fridge. If I were buying a case of pomegranates [and I have no idea how many that is where you live], you may be better off juicing just a half case at a time. The fruit keeps much better in the peel than the juice does in a jug in the refrigerator. Hope this helps a little. Jim in So Calif

I take it in supplement form. It's the ellagic acid in pomegranates (as well as in other fruits such as strawberries, blackberries and raspberries) that is beneficial. So enjoy the summer berries!

I do....I mix a shot of Pom juice and a 1/2 cup of OJ in a litre of water...yum!!!

I can't drink it straight. Has to be mixed with something sweet, like OJ. It's pretty potent.

we lived in the San Joaquin Valley and had pomegranate trees.
Most people don't know, the fruit isn't ripe until it cracks open. Since that isn't a option for commercial use, the ones in the store are all "green".
Also, when they are commercially processed, the seeds aren't extracted from all the membranes and rinds, it's included in the pulp and then filtered. ( oh, gross!)
So, no commercial pomegranate for me, I'll stay a purist and get mine from my Aunt's tree, fix it right; and then freeze it!

it's tasty, I've tried it and I like it, but it's too expensive-$8 a quart around here! I made margaritas using pomegranite and fresh-squeezed lime, they were good.

I'm drinking cranberry juice these days. The unsweetened is wicked stuff, but I dilute it with water and that helps.

I've never tried it, but I do have a pomegranate tree by my house that produces lots of them. I never pick one. Guess I should see what all I can do with them.
