I like both of the carriage house doors. What brand are you getting, or are they custom? IMO, I think the carriage house doors look more like late 19th/early 20th century estate design. I prefer a cross brace design for a Colonial style home -- to my eye, it's more of a style fit. But the carriage style is certainly a beautiful addition and dresses up a house so nicely.

Oh thank you so much for all the mockups! My front door is actually a black walnut stain - very dark brown. I don't want wood doors as I do not want the maintenance, and the door guy offered to paint them a dark brown to match, but I thought they're so far away from each other it might look odd. Anyone interested in maybe photoshopping them a very dark almost black?

They are Clopay doors - anyone have any experience opinion on them? I'm leaning towards this dealer because I like the style and he will paint them at his shop so I don't have to deal with trying to get them painted with the iffy fall weather here in oh.

I'll look at some of the other styles. But you all like the windows vs. no window?

Thanks Awm03 for changing the color! I think the dark looks nice too. The sconces on the garage are a very dark bronze, so I think the dark doors will look nice next to them.

Still not sure about the cross bars. Looks like a country barn to me. Maybe one cross instead of the X.

I can't tell if there are windows in the mock up you did. That's a big decision for me too. Also, I would paint the doors vs. staining them. From a distance, the door is so dark it looks painted so I think that would work ok.

I like the ones with the windows; they break up the huge doors. Not too crazy about the brace-style doors; they look a bit too country for my taste.

Although windows are nice for light, it is one more thing to clean and also less secure I think.

I like the one without the windows -- just seems to work better overall.

Love the dark color! Looks beautiful and classic. I think cross brace or carriage would work but the cross brace has my vote.

I say keep them the same color as your house...I don't think garage doors should be a focal point...the front entrance should be.

I like both doors posted by awn. I like the symmetry of all the windows (house and garage) of the first door, and the lighter color keeps the focus on the main part of house. On the other hand, I also like the darker color and the cross brace because it brings the look full circle, from door to roof line to garage. One look is simpler than the other.
I guess the question is: which focal point do you prefer?

I rather like the carriage doors with the windows. I can't decide whether they should be dark grey or brown!
If you don't have any other windows in the garage, having them in the garage door is a bonus.

I like the dark doors and coloring with your hosue but if you go that route, I think you need to carry it across the house by adding shutters. Otherwise, it's a very dark and heavy one-sided element. I wouldn't think you'd want the garage to be the focal point. I think the more elaborate cross bars also call for shutters, to carry that feel across the house. Although it would seem you prefer no shutters and maybe have had them removed!

I do like the windows but good point about security. The first selections have more of a Craftsman feel to them, so I'm not sure about those on your house.

I like the carriage doors with windows painted to match the existing color with the handle but not the straps. If you are concerned about security, the windows are often too high for most folks to easily look it. If they do provide an easy view, they can be obscured with a film or textured glass. It's nice to have a little natural light in the garage.

I like the carriage style with windows (no cross braces or straps) in the current color. The dark makes the garage the focal point instead of the house.

I think the windows not only add light to the garage, but they coordinate nicely with the divided light windows on the front of the house and break up the large expanse of the doors. The carriage style works well with the colonial style of the house, and the slightly darker color helps the doors to recede some without going to "black holes" if they get too dark.

If you can get the color you want without having to paint them, that would be so much better as they do come maintenance free. I had to paint my french porte doors and while so far they are fine, I'm not sure how soon I'll need to paint them again.

i would choose a garage door with windows- i like both the house color or the darker brown pics- either is a good choice imo.

the X's also look barnish to me also- i would not choose that style for your house.

once i had a house with stained wood garage doors- they required alot of maintainance!! never again!

My regret is that we didn't do a carriage style. I think that would work really nicely on your house.

I agree! I don't think the doors should be darker and stand out. They are a nice, complementary tone already. I would opt for windows (with a privacy film on them or obscured glass) to get some light in the garage and because they look nicer.
