I'm not understanding why you are tiling a window. If you want the tile to pop though, you should do something on the opposite side of the color wheel, considering blue. If you want a more mild "pop", then consider a gray.

We are tiling the window just to do the unexpected. To take what could be a boring spot and do something different. Saw the tile on sale and liked it. So its in the shape and color of the other wood window trim in the house but in a different material. We hate cooke cutter houses but don't always have the decorating skill or budget to pull off our ideas. Originally we wanted to use mosiac tile on the entire wall, top to bottom.

We want people in the kitchen to look up and see the tile and wonder, what's up those stairs?

Id rather see the tile as the frame for a pretty mirror.
I am not seeing it as a great feature around the window... Do you have any pix for inspiration that may help me see what you are trying for?

I don't have a photo of a tiled framed window but have seen many. All I've seen put the tile flat on the wall like framing a mirror.

Instead we will use the shape of the other wood work in the house. Shape and color wise it will look like most of the other windows in the house. The surprize will be its tile. We have lots of this tile so I might also frame a mirror to hang in the space. With the high ceiling there is a lot of wall space.

Decided to go lighter with the grout color.

Do you think I can use the sweet annie green as a wall color based on all the other colors in the equation?

I just have to say that I do like that you are thinking outside of the box, however, this idea is just too half baked. While I didn't mind the idea of mosaic on the whole wall, this just isn't going mysterious, rather strange or odd. I just want to give my professional opinion that you should re-think this idea. I think you should put your creative thinking caps back on and continue on! Mystery can come in many different ways and I think it would be better spent on a great paint color, perhaps a dramatic lighting fixture, a hand painted mural, some stenciling, perhaps some wallpaper.

If you choose to ignore my advice (it's your house), then I think that green would be lovely with that color tile.

Odd (wo)man out here. I like the idea. It's an accent window, so I like using the tiles for the frame. What type of WT are you planning for the window? I would use a more neutral grout, something else is going to SCREAM look at me, rather than invite a look. So going with the grout to match the tiles is probably better. I think the green wall would be ok.

Will you apply the tiles/grout directly to the wall? Are you using any type of backerboard? I don't think that's necessary, if there is not going to be moisture. What about trim around the edges? I've not had good luck with grouting and leaving the edges untrimmed...I did that with my kitchen backspash, but I'm not a pro-tiler.

I grew up in a house with windows in the bathroom/tub surround areas and the windows were tiled around. Not recalling ever seeing it any where else. I think if I saw a window surrounded in tile I would think "where is the tub/shower?" not "wow, how unexpected". But you sound very sure about your idea, which is interesting!! Are you confident it won't scream bathroom?

Thank you all for posting. I just never thought of this idea as that radical, lol! Actually it was DHs idea. I was (still am) more nervous about the paint color clashing with what will be in the kitchen.

pesky1, No WT, none needed. Wonderful sunshine comes in that window most of the day. I have left over grout in various colors so I'm going to play around with adding color to one. DH will build the frame out of wood or cement board. Then we will tile that. No tile will touch the wall except the edge of the tile on the sides. Hope that makes sense.

In our master bath (posted on the bathroom forum) I used a metal tile edge for the mosiac tile around the bath tub. Won't need that for this project.

One more question, if your still with me...Can I paint the ceiling green? Or would a lighter color be better?

When this is done good or bad I will post photos.
