220 v for sub-panel

Registration here comes under the "difficulty file."

Now back to the reason for the post. I have a main panel in the two car garage, and I have a sub panel in the detached garage. I have #6 gauge 2 wires...Red, Black, White, and Green connected to a two pole 50 amp circuit breaker in the main panel. The #6 four wires run in a 1-1/2" gray PVC pipe ...2 feet under ground to the sub panel. There are six slots for circuit breakers. I have four 20 amp single breakers with 110 v to all the receptacles I need in the garage. I need to install a 220v receptacle for my 220 volt welder. Question. Do I need to install a 50 amp two pole breaker? As on the other end in the main panel there is the 50 amp two pole that feeds the sub panel. What size wire will I need to feed the wall receptacle? The plug on the welder in a three prong. Do I need to run two Blacks and White to the wall receptacle, or four wires? Also, will I need to make the main panel two pole circuit breaker a 100 amp?

If you have six or fewer circuit breakers in the same panel you can get by without a disconnect. Normally, I'd say put one in anyhow but if the panel is so small to preclude ever getting over 6 circuits anyway, there's no point.

Welders are a special part of the electrical code, and you've not given us enough information as to how to size the conductors or the breaker. Usually the easiest way to determine this is to look at the manufacturers recommendation in the manual. If the plug for the welder only has three prongs then you run three wire (two hots for the 240V and a ground). If it's 240, the color WHITE should not be used. It should be some color other than white, gray or green.

You can not protect #6 with a 100A breaker. If you need more amps (which I'm not sure you do), you'll need to run larger feeder wires.

Here's what the manual states.
INPUT: 230v. 60 HZ, 22.5A, 1 Phase.
OUTPUT: 120A @20VDC. 25%. MAX O.C.V=30VDC. Max 150A

I'm thinking of using 10AWG wire from the sub panel to the wall receptacle with a 60 amp breaker. I will have to go back to the main panel and change the 2 pole breaker to 60 amp, as it now has a 50 amp breaker supplying the sub panel.

Would this be appropriate to use?

An update on where things ended up... The electrician advised me that I have 100amps at 600v/3 phase which translates to 300amps at 110v. So I've got lots of power. He's going to run a sub-panel from my breaker panel to my dimmers, and include 16-24 outlet plugs at 20amps/110v and a couple of 220v'ers. He advised that we don't need to turn of the master power to the master breaker, and can leave the rental units with their power on while the work takes place. He also informed me something fascinating about the dimmer packs. I had thought that if I have a 500 watt light plugged in, but I dim it to 10%, I would only be using 50 watts of power. Apparently this is not the case, and I continue to draw the full 500 watts. However only 50 watts goes to the light and the rest gets drawn by the dimmer pack. No wonder my electricity bill is so damn high. In total he's advised me it will be one full day's work. S

The welder is in excess of the 15a that the standard 110 circuit would provide. I know of the 110v portable mig welders, but the higher voltage ones can weld heavier thicknesses of metal. If the (2) 110v legs combined only offer the amps rated to a single leg, then I guess the Idea is dead in the water....Hypothetically speaking though, does the rest of the idea hold water? Is there any other reason that you can't link the two 110v outlets (fed by the (2) separate legs in a circuit panel) to make a 220v portable outlet?

A simpler method is to just use either 10/2 or 12/2 wire now depending on the current draw of the 240V A/C & heater unit. If the draw is between roughly 20A to 30A, use 10/2. If the draw is 15A to 20A, use 12/2. Wire it for 240V by attaching the black to one hot bus and the white to the adjacent hot bus with the appropriate double pole breaker installed across both buses. If you don't understand that part, then you need further instructions. When it's time to convert to 120V, simply pull the double pole breaker out, connect the black wire to a single pole breaker of the correct ampacity on either of the open bus slots, and connect the white wire to the neutral bus. Leave the ground wire where it was on the neutral/ground bus. Cover the opening from the vacant breaker slot in the panel cover with a blank filler. It's that easy!

You can't hijack another cc't off of the 6/3 running to the present oven. The reason is that you are now breakered for 50A. You can't breaker a 15A microwave and warming oven with a 50A breaker. You'll have to wire a separate 15A 14/2 cc't. To do this simply put a 60A subpanel close to the oven using the existing 6/3. Then from the new sub run a 30A 10/3 cc't to the new oven and a 15A 14/2 cc't to the microwave and another 15A cc't to the warming oven. That way you won't have to do anything to the main panel.

The 10AWG and 60A breaker would be fine for this welder (I assume this is some sort of arc / tig /mig).

You wouldn't need to upgrade the feeder breaker, though with #6 COPPER conductors you could if you wanted to.
