furniture makeover before & after pic heavy!! do more with less

Here are the before & after pics of the furniture from my Living Room makeover post. My new motto in this economy, use what you got! It's so much more econonical and older furniture wasn't made in China. The sofa is on it's 3rd version of fabric. I bought it new from Richs in Atlanta 12 years ago. It was a Henredon Ralph Lauren plaid sofa. The wing chairs, barrel chair, and cain chair were all from what my Mom and I call "The Junk Store" purchased all about 10 years ago used. They are also on their 3rd version of fabric.

This entire makeover was funded for about $2200 fabric, labor, trim, etc. Much less than the cost of one expensive sofa IMO. I had fabric leftover and trim that is being used for other projects.

Enjoy! I know I am loving the soft colors after all those years of gold and red.

AFTER (I painted and recovered) Used a beautiful damask type fabric with taupe and a blue/Green forefront. It doesn't photograph well but here it is. In person it is pretty.

I don't even know where to start...all of your projects are simply amazing. Did you make all the slipcovers and reupholster all the furniture? It all looks wonderful. I really love the transformation of the builtins and the fireplace. Really fresh and lovely and sophisticated. Are all of the items going to be used in that room? Would love to see a pic or pics of it all assembled. Magnificent eye you have for color and textures. c

kmcg85, I saw that thread and thought, gee, those look familiar. ;-) Yours look gorgeous, too! Nice to see the drapes paired with another wall color. Love the saloon sign. I was tempted by the matching shades, too, but I've decided that adding a band of the fabric (I'm taking apart a panel to do this) to the top of the silk Dupioni drapes I bought ages ago from PB for the LR will be enough. Well, maybe. I also need to have a half-moon valance made for the window above our entry. I have an extra silk panel I intend to use for that area and I might add a band of the print along the bottom edge. Or maybe 3 vertical bands. Or maybe ... I'm still mulling possibilities but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of adding a bit of this fabric to the entry valance. Are you crafty? What if you added a band of the fabric at the bottom of the shades you already own? They sell 24" pillows in this fabric so you wouldn't need to buy a whole panel for this small job. Or maybe add a band of trim that is the same color as the background of the drapes? Perhaps crazy ideas but what the heck. Sometimes, great ideas sprout from crazy ideas. schoolhouse, the holidays' craziness will make the time fly by. Before you know it, your panels will be here.

Clyft, yes, the Smoky Mountain is on the fireplace wall, as well as through the living room, the foyer, the upstairs hall, and the kitchen. It really does well with the natural woodwork and the neutral-with-green-undertones carpet that we had to work with. When we first sampled it I was afraid it looked rather stodgy and dated, but once it was on the walls it has enough of a grayed-out cast to it to look contemporary. In some lights it looks much more blue, and in some it looks green. Meghnjosh, good luck with your blues! I actually didn't want to go with blue, but this was definitely the choice that worked the best with the other requirements we were working around. And it has enough gray and green in it that it works for me. The Wedgewood Gray that we did in the mudroom (no pictures) is too blue for me; we'll be changing that when we have time. At least it is still better than the dingy white it was before!

Weird - I didn't even notice that the number of pictures went way down. It's very good information for anyone doing a reveal thread who enjoys before/after pictures. All the pics are copyright (me), not anyone's site. With the laundry room we're caught between a rock and a hard place. It's in the garage right now, a long trek from anywhere and it's complicated but there are water/drain/dryer vent issues that cannot be reconciled at that location. To move the washer/dryer to the area with three bedrooms we would completely lose a bedroom or bathroom. We no longer plan on having it directly off the master bedroom, however by process of elimination it will either be off the master bathroom or (large) master closet. Luckily both areas are ideal in terms of utilities/venting and where laundry is generated, and they're reasonably easy to access from the other three bedrooms. Wish we could have a dedicated laundry room but the floorplan of the house pretty much eliminates that possibility.

Awesome remodel! I had to go back and forth a few times to see what changed where.. lol. The fridge wall is much more usable and you added a wall dividing what I think is the living room, which really made a nice eating area and the brightness is so much better in there. Very nice!

Everything looks so beautiful-the pieces, the fabrics-just serene and beautiful. I have a chair that is upholstered in a fabric very similar to your sofa. It's mine! So comfy the color is perfect.

Oh, that barrel-back chair! The damask is perfect with it. What did you use to paint the wood? That chair is exquisite. Everything else is lovely too, but that chair made me gasp :)

awm03 re: barrell back chair. i have been playing with faux painting and such for several months. I use all my hundreds of paint samples to do this. I used a couple of base paint coats, thinly applied and wiped off. Then another coat with stain and glaze wiped off on top. It's combination of coatings of grey, taupe, and furniture stain mixed with glaze. I can't really tell you exactly how I did it. The chair had a reddish wood on it so I sanded it and then painted. I guess you would call it an antique paint finish. It's really fun for me to do this type of finish as I stink at anything that has to be perfect. It's something you can't mess up to me. I loved all the furniture i was seeing at Wisteria and online at the blogs that were antiqued so I started trying it. My Mom who helped me find all the furniture is furious at me for painting it but, I keep telling her it's nothing a little stripper won't take off later. Plus these aren't fine antiques or anything, just junk store finds. I wouldn't do it to my antique armoire or other pieces. I wish I could be more specific but it is just trial and error process. It's like my creative outlet!

Beautiful! I would love to learn to upholster. Did you take a class? I have found someone who does beautiful custom slipcovers at a great price, so I plan to have some made.

I absolutely adore the cane back chair and the barrel back chair!

Yes, would love to see the whole room once it's put together.

You have done what I am just beginning to think about doing!I was surfing CL last night looking at wing chairs to slipcover with linen like fabric like you! .( I may have found a slipcovered Mitchell Gold sofa for 250) no wing chairs yet.But just thinking about it,not sure I can pull it off but your photos show I am on right track You have amazing talent here- not everyone can do what you have done- as simple as it may be to you to do! You guys are sooo nice. Thank you for the compliments. I didn't sew or upholster anything myself. I have a guy that has been doing my stuff for years at very reasonable prices. I wish I could sew but cannot!

I will take some more pics when I am done once I get the curtains and all that up.

cooperbailey that sofa is a steal it sounds like. Good luck finding the wing chairs. Resale shops may be a good place to check also.
