My 1st Consultation!

For 11yrs. or so I have posted on this forum. For the last 7 or 8 of them GW old timers have listened to me drone on about the furniture business that we were to buy, the little stone house on the same property that we were going to move into, my dreams of eventually having my own little 'something' w/ home decor and furniture. So many years and many of you hung in there w/ me.

You saw us finally buy the business at the end of last year then the offer posed to us about buying DH's grandmother's historic farmhouse in the near future when we are ready (business had to come first) instead of the stone cottage and they are willing to wait for us.

Yesterday DH told me that he set up a consultation for me to assist a customer w/ her table and chairs. She knows the look that she wants but isn't sure how to achieve it so I am going in to go over options and paint colors/ finishes w/ her.

It's a just a little step but one towards my desire to have my own decorative furniture painting and home decor business and a way to grow the business that we currently have. And high quality freehand painting. I've been professionally trained in many different styles of painting but never put it to use. I've also been fortunate enough to grow up w/ furniture makers, some of who are amazing at their techniques for ageing pieces (they will not divulge). Never really believed that I could do it or that the opportunity for me could ever be there but I dreamed none-the-less.

1 more year school year until all of our kids are in school FT and then I can really just jump in securely knowing that financially this will be the perfect time to expand and offer more services while satisfying my true desires!

So that's my update of some of the things that you've heard me yammer away about for so long. Thank you for helping me keep those dreams alive because there were lots of times when I thought any 1 of them would never happen, but mostly the one where I would get to paint furniture again.

Hi LF and RJ! Haven't been over here for a bit, but let me say: Well done, indeed! Not only did you manage to carry out the butchering, you have presented the emotional and moral issues very well. I particularly liked this passage: "...definitely more committed to our livestock, and strangely, so much more intimately connected to life and this earth... much more deeply than our city counterparts- who recoil in horror, and to whom we have difficulty explaining." The distancing of people from their food sources and the amount of denial that goes on among many people who get all their food from the supermarket is appalling. So much of today's supermarket food is overpackaged, overprocessed and downright disguised, to the point where it is impossible to see what the raw ingredients are. It allows people to conveniently "forget" that all food comes from animals or plants and to raise their children in profound ignorance of what food really is. I guess turning a blind eye is the only way that they can handle contributing to the horrors of factory farming. Sorry, I didn't mean this to turn into a rant. I mainly wanted to say that you did really, really well!

LOL, the purple heart of winter sowing! Hi all, my first year WSing and no battle scars yet. I used my Swiss Army knife to cut up the milk jugs - haven't tried thicker containers yet though. The awl on the Swiss Army knife works excellent for punching hoes in the bottom. An awl is normally used for punching small holes in leather or wood and is very sharp. It slid through the bottom of milk jugs like butter! Also used the small knife blade to cut the flaps which also cut very easily and safely. Seems simpler than heated knives and soldering tools? This pic shows the Awl that comes with the knife. I slid it in and gave a little twist to open the hole a little. It was very quick and easy, and quite easy to control.

Thanks Dawn for posting your mw being up. I would be almost positive that it is indeed viridis. You are correct that the mw tends to come up faster by the edge of the road more than likely due to the warmth of the pavement, and tendency to hold water. Congrats upon seeing your 1st Monarch!!! Even if it looked pretty fresh, it was still your 1st sighting, and they are always the most special. Probably a Houston migrant looking to leave some eggs. I will post your sightings. I always look forward to your reports. They are appreciated. :) How wonderful to hear that you got some much needed rain. I know that you were really dry, and it will make a big difference. Okiegardener, good to hear from you. Like Randy said, it is probably too late to think about planting some native mw seeds in April. Alot of them them require cold stratification. But, tropical mw does very well in Ok. Occassionally, it will reseed for me in warmer winters, but I have never had it come back from the roots in Okla. I have been able to overwinter some in pots in the garage. The Monarchs do tend to prefer it in laying their eggs. What part of Okla. do you live? You may have some luck finding the A. tuberosa in some nurseries. It is perennial, and comes back every year. The blooms are gorgeous, and really attracts the butterflies, but does not do well in the heat. The A. incarnata (Swamp mw) does well in a lower wetter area with morning sun in central Ok. Sometimes you can find it in nurseries. I would highly second Randy's recommendation in trying to make one of Marilyn's plant shows from Wildthings Nursery. She is a dear friend, very knowledgeable about natives and butterflies, and has quite the green thumb. She carries alot of hard to find butterfly host plants that she grows from seed or propagation. E-mail her, and perhaps you can work something out. Good luck with your butterfly garden! Randy,hope things are going well for you and your daughter. I probably haven't spoken too terribly much about the farmhouse because I've felt that I've talked about other things in the works for so long that I didn't want to go down that path again. Sometimes we dream out loud because we're afraid the dream may not come true.

It was built in 1792 and purchased by DH's family in the 1920's or 30's. DH and his family lived in a small cottage on the property but then began building a home because the cottage was too small for them. His Grandmother was in perfect health living in the big house. Half way through building DH's grandmother suddenly died and there wasn't enough money to continue the current build and maintain the big house so under much duress they sold the big house. That same owner has lived there ever since and remained a very good, loyal friend of the family. Now she lives alone in the house and 2 Christmas's ago approached DH and I at a party and asked when we would be ready to take it off of her hands. Her children don't want it, her boyfriend lives out of state and it's too big for her to continue to take care of. So fingers crossed it will be back in the family sometime soon.

Deedee99 - I like those ideas! My dad recently designed a fox silhouette for me based on a design that I gave him. When I was up visiting he gave it to me. I have it painted and I just have to age and distress it. I love it and we made extra's to give to my In-laws who love all things fox related. I wanted to use the silhouette as part of my logo and sign.
