Hello everyone,

Once again, I am helping Monarch Watch and Journey North monitor when your native milkweed is up, and when you see your 1st Monarch of the season. Monarchs have been moving north into Texas this last month after overwintering in Mexico. They have been documented as far north as Dallas thus far, so it won't be long. My 1st Monarchs of the season have been documented from around March 25th to around the lst of April.

These Monarchs will be looking for milkweed to lay their eggs on as they will need the next generation to carry on further north, and milkweed is the only plant that they will lay their eggs on.

My native milkweed is just starting to come up in my garden that has been supplemented with some extra water, but I have not found any in the ditches and fields yet. I live in central Okla. Hopefully, we will get a wonderful statewide rain tomorrow, with no storms! And with a week or 2 of sun, the native mw should start popping up.

Most of the native milkweed in southern and central Okla. that I found is Asclepias viridis. Those living in the more northern areas of the state would find Common milkweed, or Asclepias syriaca.

Journey North is a wonderful site for children and adults alike to follow the Monarch spring migration, milkweed, eggs, and caterpillars, as well as the exciting fall migration. They also follow the 1st Hummingbirds of spring.

You can post your sightings on this sight, and I will follow up with Journey North. Or, you are welcomed to post your own sightings to Journey North.

Have a great spring spring. This si my most favorite time of the year!

Randy, Dawn, any milkweed up yet?
