What finish are your door jambs and knobs? Share your photos

I wanted ORB hardware and lighting. But, with builder error I may be switching to satin nickel. I'm just worried that satin nickel may go "out" before orb - and I think it will be harder to find lighting in the satin fininsh.

So I'm just looking to see what others here have and what finished lighting they put with their door hardware.

I guess I can use the satin but is it really ok and does it look GREAT to have other finishes on lamps, lighting, ceiling fans? How do you know what to put where when your mixing metals?

I don't think it is necessary at all to match door hardware to lighting. I actually think that starts to look a bit static.

I agree with palimpsest - I don't think all your door hardware has to necessarily match every light fixture or faucet.
Also - I haven't seen any indication that satin nickel is going out of style. Builders in my area use both ORB and nickel in their models. ORB in the more Euro-style homes and silver finishes in the contemporary ones. I don't know if these are the "rules", it's just what I've noticed!

Definitely ok to mix finishes. We also have chrome Delta Leland faucets in some of our baths. Towel bars, robe hooks, and toilet paper holder are chrome. Light fixtures, cabinet hardware, and door hardware are ORB. In the master we have chrome Moen Monticello faucets then everything else is bronze (light fixtures, towel bars,robe hooks, toilet paper holder, cabinet hardware, door hardware). I have flair style ones. I bought them backwards, so they are all facing UP instead of down. I heard down was how they are supposed to go. There's a way to tell if you need a RH or LH one... stand within the door frame with your back to the hinge-side of the jamb, with the door open. If the door is open on your left, you have a left-handed door. If the door is open on your right, it is a right-handed door. Now if I'd of read that first.... but the guy told me the levers were okay no matter what (he lied apparently because it was an Ebay purchase). So now I have "up" facing levers unless I want to get all new ones. So far, nobody's noticed though? Does it really matter in the scheme of life? I'm letting this one slide! Oh and I have kwikset locks; you can push up or down on them. It doesn't matter. You will not need to think about it. You're brain will just do what is natural. An they are as comfortable as knobs. As for the person whose ripping pockets, I don't think anyone's had that problem here except for the robes on the back of the door. They will get caught on the levers. But the part about opening the doors easily with filled hands is true and the entire reason to get these types of knobs (other than aesthetics). Before we bought our current 1925 brick bungalow farmhouse, we spent several months gathering estimates from contractors and tradesmen so we could make an informed decision and offer. Now granted, the house is in rather original condition (i.e., very few updates, mechanical upgrades, etc.), had not been lived in for about a year, and had quite an accumulation of possessions from three generations that the heirs hadn't cleaned out yet, but the house is very solid with great bones. My favorite comment is from the HVAC contractor who walked around and then asked "Has the house been condemned?" Another favorite came secondhand after a general contractor looked at the house for a remodeling job and later told a mutual friend that he thought I had bitten off more than I could chew! Of course, the house wasn't ours yet when these comments were made, but we closed on it a few months ago and are happily restoring it. It wouldn't be charitable to say I want to make them eat their words, but I do sometimes think on what they might say in a year or two!

Vic I'm sorry...I must have missed that post. Our ceilings are 8' tall, the hood is 58" wide by 27" deep. It has a vent a hood insert which we had to have remade to fit (given that vent a hood is US and the stove is French measurements. I'm going to have to measure the height for you if you want specifics, but I can do a quick calculation...it's 33" off the range, so that total is 69...so the hood is 27" high total. The trim is 3" wide and the black nordic antique granite is 9" wide. If you actually want close measurements of the slope etc., let me know. We custom built the thing out of marine grade ply. It weighs a TON and is hung from the rafters with big chains, then of course fixed to the studs on the wall. Total cost wasn't that bad. the cost of the insert with an additional 1300 to rebuild it (ok that was a little painful LOL) and the granite is scraps left over from our bathroom renovation. I think the wood trim was about 500 but it was custom made for us and a sheet of marine grade is 80. While it adds up to more than a regular old metal hood :) (Which look great in some houses) I wanted something unique and in this size...we kept finding them costing close to ten grand for plaster and stone.

Well, my home really isn't going to be contemporary. I did go to look at lighting in the satin finish and most of the fixtures do look alittle more modern. I liked a lot of the satin nickel lights, but they also looked a little blah to me..

I like the look of mixing metals and I do it deliberately; too much of a single type looks matchy-matchy to me. I would keep door hardware all the same (whichever one it is that you love most) and then introduce the other metals in lamps, curtain rods etc. I try to use each metal minimum of twice in a room/area. I love satin nickel but I'm also wondering whether it will be the next "shiny brass". It's nice for door hardware if you want a subtle look. ORB would definitely call attention to the hardware - if that's what you would like to do.

Antique brass and shiny chrome never really seem to go away do they?

By "door jambs and knobs", you must mean "door hinges and knobs"? (Door jambs are the vertical pieces of the door casing, made of wood.)

IMO door hardware shouldn't draw attention to itself. That's not to say that it shouldn't be well-designed, just that it should not be ostentatious or be the one of the first things that you notice in a room. I agree with the others that it's fine to mix finishes, but the style of the hardware should be appropriate for the style of the house, and the general style should carry through the whole house. Victorian hardware would look jarringly out of place in a Craftsman bungalow or in a Spanish Colonial Revival. If you choose something that goes with the style of your house, you won't have to worry about whether it will be dated in a few years.

It sounds like you're building new. What style is it? What style are your doors? Most new homes are a mixture of styles, but if one style predominates, that would make your choices easier.

As for ORB, my prediction is that it will be here for a while, if only because it's so cheap to manufacture. (It's either a chemical process that darkens metal or a painted finish, not actual metal plating or a solid metal.)
