Paint help: Ivoire too gold? Help! Have to make a decision!

I had my contractor paint a bedroom with SW Ivoire to decide if I wanted to use in my main living areas. Although it appears more gold and much darker than I thought I think it may work. My husband hates it, says it is yellow! We do not have the light up yet and the windows still have the protective film covering them. Our house is on the north side of a hill and does not get a lot of light. Any other suggestions? I do not want anything too gray or tan. Also, my son's room has a cathedral ceiling and we chose SW Tradewind for the walls and Topsail for the ceiling. Now I am unsure and thinking of painting the ceiling Tradewind also. Help! Picking paint is hard!

Hi Roacky - what color were your trying to achieve? I went with SW Blonde, and when I first saw it - I hated it because I thought it was too yellow and dark. It seemed to get better after the initial day/shock and it is more golden to me now.

Can't help with the Ivorie, but here's a picture of a half-bath I recently painted Tradewind. I really love this color.

When confusion reigns, I usually recommend simplicity. When presented with shapes and colors, there is no single correct way to do things. Many of us see color and we interpret design differently. So my input is simply an opinion. The mocha glaze on your cabinets sort of sets the color tone for the vanity bathroom grouping. For example, I see "brown" as a design color that influences the other choices to be made, whereas I see espresso as a neutral that for the most part can go along with most other colors. I do see the backsplash tile coordinating with your cabinet and slab choices. But the colors in the tile can further refine the color palette in the bathroom. Same with the size and shape of the backsplash tiles. The mosaic sort of drives the design down a certain path. If you're comfortable with all that, then that's good. Your choices are defining your style without you really being cognizant of what your style is. That can be a good thing. But if you're antsy about your choices? Stacking a mosaic/tile backsplash right on top of a slab countertop can be the perfect look for some folk. Others find it visually abrupt or visually jarring. They want a transition piece between the two. With you not being sure of what you want or where you want to go, I'd recommend using the slab remnants for your backsplash. If they can cut and fold up the edges of the slab to form the backsplash pieces, that'll help to maintain the slab pattern across the slab and up the backsplash, fine. If not, no worries, as the movement in your slab isn't significantly directional. With the vanity being in an alcove, if you wanted to add the mosaic tile at a later date to refine the design, you could stack the mosaic on top of the granite backsplash and tile some or all of the alcove walls with the mosaic. If you are truly uneasy about making a design now, then wait. Have them fabricate and mark the backsplash pieces but then set them in a quiet corner of your basement for safekeeping. After the construction dust has settled, you can dry set them on the vanity and you can look at the bathroom over time and see which you prefer; the granite or the tiled splash. It's so hard to make these decisions! I can tell you how I made mine and why. For me, the countertop was the most important. I work a lot in my kitchen, the countertop is my work surface and what I am staring at for hours at a time while I am working in it. So I fit the cabinet colour to my stone choice and was very specific about my stone. That's not to minimize the importance of the cabinet's impact on the overall feel in the kitchen but there are a million colours of stain/paint for the cabinets, and I could find SO many that I would love in my kitchen. To me it seems a no brainer that the stone choice takes priority over the cabinet colour. But that's just me! You'll find lots of opinions that are the exact opposite so in the end it depends on what YOU like and want in your kitchen. There are also a multitude of different countertop choices out there, and I had several that I liked and that I know could have really looked great and performed well in my kitchen. So if you really want the caramel coloured maple I have no doubt you can find a stone to complement it well that you are really happy with if you have the time to look around a bit. First, I always choose to paint after the cabinets are installed for two reasons: (1) the installation of the cabinets may cause nicks and marks in the wall; and (2) the walls and entire kitchen will look different after the cabinets are installed so that it is better to choose your paint after the cabinets are in place. Second, regarding your concern about painting the ceiling with the island. A good painter will cover everything completely, not just the island, but counters and cabinet fronts as well, so that all will be protected. I also agree with Raee's second paragraph above. Your painter was in a rush for whatever reason; consequently you have to live with paint color you don't like and have to repaint also, just so he wouldn't be inconvenienced. It sounds like you need a new painter. Check out Angie's List and Yelp for recommendations. Third, I do not like wall color and ceiling color to be the same. If you want your walls to have a gray tone, why would you want your ceiling to be gray too? I use Benjamin Moore Cloud White on my ceilings. I really like it; it's soft and neutral. You can't go wrong with it. Once I had a ceiling painted, and just after the painters started, I noticed the white was not as soft, and it turned out the painter was using Benjamin Moore's Decorators White because he had it in his shop, rather than the Cloud White I had specified. He hadn't gotten far in painting the ceiling when I noticed, but I made him get the paint color I specified and made him paint it over. That was two homes ago. I never used that painter again of course. But I have never been disappointed in the effect of Cloud White on my ceilings. Oh, and make sure your ceiling paint is the "flat" finish, not semi-gloss or eggshell. Having said that, I like kitchen walls to be in eggshell cause it wipes easier. Okay, I went out to the house today. It was rainy and overcast, but it was still hard for me to tell whether these will put out enough light for you. We have 2 recessed lights behind them (like in the pic) and 2 in front of them. We just used the decorative "old-fashioned" bulbs which came with the lights which, I think, are 60 watt. I think you can use 100 watt, but I'm thinking that would just increase glare, not help with task. I turned them on and looked for lighting reflection in the granite, but couldn't see much. I would have tried higher voltage bulbs for you, but, alas, there were none in the house. I'll be honest: I select items based on shape. I can look at a page of 100 lamps at the same time and immediately pick the one or two whose shape I like. That's how I picked these pendants. Task wasn't as important to me as much as size (had to be large since I had selected 2 rather than 3 pendants and the ceiling had volume), shape, and not cluttering the visual space. The choice of pendants and chandelier were the hardest for me, so I understand your dilemma. Good luck. I don't think I helped much.

We painted almost our entire house in SW Blonde and would do it again in a heartbeat. This "family" of colors (Ivoire, Blonde, etc.) is such a warm, flattering tone - my furniture, rugs, lamps, accessories, show up so beautifully (in my humble opinion) with this color as its background. It might not work for everyone, but it certainly did for us. Good luck with your decision. We built our house last year and I definitely sympathize with you, wanting to make the right decisions, but you will.

Choosing paint is hard enough but when you don't have any furniture or other accessories, it's REALLY difficult to tell. Everything is going to change when you have other things up against it and since the windows are still covered, the color is going to lighten up quite a bit. Having said that, if hubby absolutely hates it, I'd be hesitating too. What color did he really want? Something more off white? There was a good thread with off white colors recently. What style/color furniture will be in your main living areas?

What size is your main living area? Does it have cathedral ceilings? What about your flooring?

I used Ivoire in my living/dining area. Love it in the dining room but in the two/story living room with a northeast orientation it does read yellow the higher on the wall it goes. Certainly wouldn't call it 'dark' though.

If you can get your hands on the SW old color deck, look at sticks 18 & 17. Dromedary camel and Raffia basket in particular. They are similar to ivorie and blonde but just a hair browner...if that makes sense.

I should have mentioned, I do love the Blonde now - it is a very warm and pleasing color. However, my absolute favorite color is in our masterbedroom currently - and that is Dromedary Camel. Very, Very similar to blonde just as gk5040 said - but just a tad bit more brown (less yellow).

I have Ivoire in my low-light north-facing kitchen (creamy white cabinets). I HATE yellow and it does not read yellow to me at all - it's more of a beigey golden tan.

However, as lindybarts said, if DH hates it that's not good! Perhaps the Raffia or the Dromedary Camel would be better for him.

I love Dromedary Camel and almost chose it for my great room (went with Stonebriar instead and love that, too).

My concern is that OP said she thought Ivoire was dark. If that's the case, DC is much darker.

Try Napery, it is on the next card over from Ivoire. Ivoire was too gold for me as well and Napery was creamier and worked well for us.
