Cabinets coming EARLY! Need help making some fast decisions...
Comments (4)Thanks amysrq and ellabee (Ella is my 7-year-old's name) for your advice. Countertops for the island are my biggest concern at the moment, since the island will also contain the sink and dishwasher, it will require plumbing, and I am trying to schedule all of the different jobs and keep things moving! The backsplash will likely be fairly simple with some subways, so I feel like I can postpone that for a little while. We have so many projects going on with the house and would like to have enough "finished" to move in the spring, so the sooner we can get this done, the better. And honestly, I have been thinking about all of this for so long that it is a relief to just make some decisions, just to be able to move forward! Resale is not too big of an issue, as our house is pretty "niche" to begin with. It is an old (ca. 1843) mansion with lots and lots of character (stained glass, elaborately carved wood, murals on some of the ceilings). The kitchen will be nice, but definitely not the main reason someone would be attracted to the house. Anyway, we are renovating it top to bottom, and as much time and money as it is going to take, you will have to drag my cold, dead body from it to get me to move again! Soapstone seems to fit the era, but i am worried about softness. I would probably be ok if I can find one of the varieties known to be a little harder. I love my Corian in our previous (well, actually current, as we have yet to sell it) kitchen, but I am looking at a darker color (soapstone-like), which I am afraid will not be good at all for showing scratches on a primary work space. Granite and quartz are out. Too hard and modern looking for my tastes and the feel of the house. I also really dislike cold countertops. Decisions, decisions... Thanks for your ideas!...See MoreHelp! Comments (6)I'd want both ends to be the same--square corners on both ends. Go for the max. length that you can get out of the slab & have square corners since island seating isn't important to you. (The 12'' overhang orig planned for wasn't enough room for seating anyway plus the hassle of having stools to stub toes on & complicating sweeping & cleaning up.)...See MoreNeed Photoshop help to make decision...please
Comments (12)I'm using Picture Painter. It's pretty limited when it comes to importing pictures and doesn't do horizontal repetitions very well, so I did the side wall with it and the back wall with Paint to see if the colors came out any better. This is probably the best I can do. To get your photo on there, I have to straighten it in Picasa, then crop to just the tile wanted, then upload to the program. All that distorts the image a bit and Picture Painter's standard is to have 50% transparency which makes the colors not true without adjusting the saturation. That's why I think photoshop must be easier. Hopefully, someone who has that will take a crack at your photos....See MoreKitchen reno - can't make decision on style/colour - need your help
Comments (5)The window by the fridge is too big right now but we will be making it smaller so it doesn't interfere with the fridge. Porcelain is a manufactured countertop which is very strong and low maintenance. It is also thin, unlike granite/quartz which is a look I like. The one I like looks a bit like marble but I understand you can get many different looks. It is more expensive than granite. herbflavor - I've looked for inspiration photos but really haven't found anything for a small kitchen that doesn't have an island - other than stillpitpat's photos above. That works. I should say that I have white appliances....See Moremmhmmgood
