It seems that you've found a cool solution here without posts. In case anyone else is looking at this, our island is 8' long and we have a 14" overhang. We have posts supporting each corner which are quite substantial in size and fastened to the floor. I love having the aprons as well but be careful when you decide to go that route since it will inhibit the amount of room people have for their lap space when sitting at it. In our case, we only did an Apron around the sides. If you want an apron where people sit, you would either need to raise the island or somehow make the stools a bit shorter. Here is a pic of ours when the counters were being installed. Since our posts are hollow, we had power run up into them through the floor with outlets inserted and facing inwards towards the stools on each side. They are totally hidden yet really accessible! Btw, a longer overhang is totally worth it and makes sitting at the island WAY more comfortable! This post was edited by TB151 on Fri, Mar 14, 14 at 8:40

Light granite with garnets (round dots of red/purple)you: large really dark cluster with lots of little spots (could be mica: will be more ruff feeling to the touch and less polished) 3. tearing out granite 'could' effect any other granite touching and/or splash touching 4. Seal~Seal~Seal with a VOC compliant granite sealer: not water based: clean granite with only true granite approved cleaners & polishers: usually commercial brands works very best. 5. I guess you were unaware that you are allowed to see slab before being cut with templates layed out on the slab at cutting time to approve placement. Facts: A characteristic referred to as "pitting" is normally due to the fact that granite is a natural product that has a crystalline structure, sometimes resulting in small spaces between the varying mineral crystals. In some cases, certain tiny crystals may also be removed during the polishing process, causing the pits to become more visible. Various steps are taken during the finishing process to reduce the visibility of these pits, but they cannot be totally avoided in all granite types. Pitting will not become worse with regular use or with the passage of time. Many types of granite have small "fissures" or hairline cracks on the surface of the slab, usually more visible in the larger quartz crystals. These surface fissures should not be confused with structural cracks that permeate the entire slab. Fissures are a natural result of the heating and cooling of the stone during its formation millions of years ago. Fissures will not grow or expand over time. I hope this helps. I think consistency is important, especially in a small space. If most of the finishes are chrome (what's your hardware on the vanity, by the way?), by installing a light or lights that are ORB, you are drawing attention to them and you might want to think about that. Seems like from what I've seen on the shows where people are fixing up to sell, keeping things neutral is a good way to go. And just because you can see the two lights from the LR, doesn't mean they should match; the lav and the LR are very distinct spaces, after all. If you feel its too cold in there with all chrome, perhaps warm up the space with a nice pop of color in your hand towel, mat on the floor if you are so inclined, or other small accessory. Jpmom, you home is gorgeous already! The 12" crown will look perfect with the already tall baseboards. Then add all the other woodwork in, the fireplace mantle, wainscoting, and pillars in the dining room. So pretty! My first reaction was to continue the white painted woodwork. It seems naturally connected to that bar wall from the the LR and DR with the baseboards and wainscoting. Oh and I also love that transom window above the other doorway too! My other thought was that I know from experience how the backsplash tile can completely change colors due to the lighting and what is directly next to it. I would want the two areas in the kitchen with the backsplash to look related. It may look completely different with one being next a window with white cabs and dark counters verses the other being in low natural light with black cabs and white Quartz. I'd definitely wait to decide on what to do with the bar area until the rest of the kitchen is painted white as Romy suggested. I do think it might look great either way, but I'm just one who needs to see it in real life before committing. I am sure either way it is gonna be stunning! ETA.... Could you possibly find a remnant of the Volga blue to fit the bar top if you went with white cabs on the bar? Or possibly just cut the granite and add a dark walnut type wood butcherblock section that reads dark above the wine fridge? Think romy's dark wood top next to the granite? Just a thought....:-)
