What labels do you use for frozen dishes?
Comments (27)I use painter's masking tape -- either the blue stuff or the new Frog (green) tape. It sticks on plastic containers and plastic freezer bags and comes off easily. I, too, write the label info with a Sharpie, usually while the tape is still on the roll. I try to tear off relatively nice edges, but it doesn't bother me if I get a weird edge. Of course, if the item is already frozen and chilly, I don't think anything would work. And tape doesn't work that well if you're trying to stick it on a glass casserole. Comments (18)I second that ravencajun..after I posted I remember it's not always safe. Once I put something in what appeared to be not boiling water and it kind of exploded the water. I always use a mit now and am not fooled by water that may not appear hot. I also noticed with the vinegar that the fumes are often very strong and even irritating or burning to the nose so if you use vinegar... when you open the microwave, stand back for a few seconds and allow the fumes to escape. Comments (29)I hated having it over the range. I even burned my breast once on the stove top once when taking out a casserole dish and placing it elsewhere (I'm very short). Please, do not ask how this is possible - it just IS. And of course, they barely can capture the grease and steam which comes off the stove top which others have mentioned, so the house smells awful after cooking certain foods, let alone the clean up involved and how hard it is to get into the MW itself to clean. So, in my new kitchen, it's going onto a shelf, in an area sort of dedicated to that and coffee area. There's a 27" cabinet above and below, with a landing area for the coffee pot and toaster oven below the microwave. I'll be able to store whatever is needed for coffee, tea and snacks there (there's a 9" thin upper cabinet to the right of it as well). It's on the opposite wall of my main cooking area, so it won't conflict with what I'm doing if anyone else wants to use it while I'm cooking, and near the refrigerator which has the water in the door for easy access for tea and coffee making....See Morewhere do you like your microwave?
Comments (36)We're putting ours on a built-in shelf right next to the frig, within the work area yet still on the "periphery" of the kitchen. Don't think we'll both with a "garage door," but we're still toying with that. It'll be low enough for our almost 10-yr-old but high enough that I don't have to bend over to peer/reach in. tullamore - I know it's somewhat off-topic, but as a biologist, I just have to say that what you read/saw/learned simply isn't true. Every process of cooking alters the original structure of the molecules in our food - if it didn't, the food would remain completely unchanged through the cooking process (and thus there would be no need to cook anything...). However, that alteration simply changes the "shape" of the molecules (so proteins unfold a bit, for example) - but the nutrients our bodies need are still perfectly usable by our bodies (it's the building blocks IN the proteins that we need, not the proteins themselves). As proof - each nutrient has a specific "transporter" (i.e. doorway, if you will) through the stomach and intestinal lining. If they are altered, they will not be absorbed (i.e. can't pass through the proper transporter), and thus will go straight through you and come out as waste. That doesn't happen when we eat microwaved foods - our bodies absorb just as much as if we had cooked it on the stove or in the oven. For maximum nutritional value, raw is always best (i.e. veggies and fruits, etc) - but as for cooking in the oven versus the microwave, I promise there is no difference as far as our bodies are concerned.
