What do you use to clean your microwave?

Years ago I used Microwave Magic, but I haven't seen that product in ages.

Since I'm unable to get out of my driveway today, I thought I'd make use of my unexpected time at home to get some work done in the kitchen. The sun is shining, which is always inspiring, even when it lands on the microwave and makes me notice that it needs help. :-)

I use a vinegar and water spray it works very well on many appliance surfaces, you can buy the products that have vinegar in it or just make up your own.

I would love to use SB. I use it on our other tub. Great stuff! But, apparently it's "abrasive" and is a big no-no for acrylic. Fiberglass, yes, but not acrylic.

Very true, kfhl - many air fresheners work by using nasal anesthetics to keep you from smelling whatever you're trying to cover up. Now that I have very few things that are chemically scented in the house, walking past the aisle of air fresheners actually burns my nose. We use natural beeswax candles if we want to use one - but that's usually saved for power outages. As far as the free and clear products are concerned...you can't be certain that it is safe for allergy sufferers. My husband is actually allergic to many components of commercially produced free/clear products - including a chemical that is frequently added to such products to 'remove' the other strong smells in the product to create a 'fragrance free' item - in lieu of adding a 'fragrance'.

Not sure how different modern painted finishes are, but for our much older painted cabinets, I clean them with a vinegar solution. (I use a 50-50 mix because it's the same multi-purpose solution we use everywhere else in the house, but you could easily drop that down to 10-90 for a much milder cleaning solution.) I sometimes add lemon juice if I have one handy, and that would probably help with the vinegar smell, which is the one downside---otherwise it does a really good job. I dilute it a bit, add a drop of mild washing soap, and use it on our wood floors when they need more than a vacuum, too, which works very well.

Oldgardener, I think that's my problem. :-)

I like the idea of vinegar and water. Haven't tried it.

I boil a cup of vinegar and water for a bit and wipe down the steamed stuff. Very easy. The steaming helps loosen up everything.

I have one friend, she is quite a bit older than I am, she only uses vinegar and water to clean, she never buys any of the cleaning sprays at the store. She said that is all her mother ever used and that is how she learned and sees no reason to change. I know my Mom used it a lot too so I have been using vinegar and water more and more, vinegar is a very good sanitizer and odor killer.
I pulled out some crystal that I had still boxed up from the move and it was so cloudy and dusty, I put straight vinegar on a paper towel and after I washed them I wiped them down with that vinegar and they are just so sparely now.
vinegar is a popular household cleanser, the many uses of vinegar!

Oh wait, you're talking about the outside of the microwave, with the sun shining on it?

I wipe it down with alcohol, which gets grease and dust off it.

damp cloth would have been ok, but dh reheated navy beans and they popped all over the place...so needed something stronger than plain water...

Heat water to boiling and when you take it out, wipe down the inside - the steam from the water helps loosen things that are stuck or cooked on inside the MW

I dont have nor want a microwave I use to have one,I would just set a cup of water in there turn it on a few minutes,leave door shut.Leave it a few minutes then go in all wipes off.Cant beat steam.

I just put a pyrex measuring cup in the microwave with water in it and let it come to a good full rolling boil. Then I let it sit in there for about 10 minutes. Remove it all, then wipe it clean.

Anyone that is boiling water in a microwave please be extremely careful and know how to do it properly, it can become a bomb and cause serious injury, always put something in the dish to allow the bubbles to be released I use a wooden skewer.

I second that ravencajun..after I posted I remember it's not always safe.

Once I put something in what appeared to be not boiling water and it kind of exploded the water. I always use a mit now and am not fooled by water that may not appear hot.

I also noticed with the vinegar that the fumes are often very strong and even irritating or burning to the nose so if you use vinegar... when you open the microwave, stand back for a few seconds and allow the fumes to escape.

But again, be very cautious of the hot water!

I often toss my dishcloth and plastic scratcher pad in the microwave for 1-2 minutes after washing the dishes to sanitize them. I find that after doing that, it's a good time to clean the microwave, as it's all steamy in there and it's easy to wipe off at that point.

I put in a wet paper towel and run microwave for a few seconds then just wipe everything out. works great.

inside: I nuke the remains of a lemon after I squeeze it for our ice tea, and then wipe with a cloth
