I find masking tape comes off in the freezer. I usually use a sharpie and write on the container or wrapping.

Masking tape and a sharpie pen for most items. If I have a large bag of smaller bags (like meatballs or sausage patties) I write the food items, date, etc. on a slip of paper and put it in the large bag to remind me of what is in there. I usually don't have a problem with masking tape coming off. If it is real old tape, it could be less sticky.

I use a Dymo labeler. They seem to cling well in the freezer & come off easily as long as you remove them before the container goes into the D/W. Makes for easy labeling when you're freezing multiples of the same type items.

Masking tape for me too; with a sharpie. On the seal-a-meal bags I sharpie on the flap that will be cut off.

If I freeze small portions in individual bags, I put them all into a large bag (often a recycled bread bag)and just make one label for the outer bag.

I bought a roll of freezer tape and use that. Easy to pull off and doesn't come off in the freezer. Works well for me.

I prefer freezer tape, too! It looks like masking tape, but it always comes off the containers cleanly. The only trouble is that it's sometimes hard to find in the stores.

We write right on the food saver bag what it is and the date we put it in the freezer. We have also used just a piece of paper written with the info needed and placed inside the zip lock bag ontop of the wrapped meat or veggie that is being frozen. NancyLouise

I use masking tape but being kind of OCD, the torn edge bugs me and scissors are not that handy...ha...I just thought an actual label would be easier to deal with but of course more expensive. I did find some on a google search, I guess 500 would last forever...HA!

I thought freezer tape won - I also find that masking tape comes off in the freezer. Who doesn't keep scissors in the kitchen? I have three pairs hanging for easy access so that I can grab them when I want to pick herbs and chilies in the yard, and I also use them for trimming cut flowers. I use scissors instead of a knife for cutting chives as well as for turkey bacon.

I've been bad about not labeling what's in my freezer, and so I'm been doing some surprise POOFs as well. I'm going to clear it out soon and sort through everything because it's getting too crowded. I have a side-by-side, and it seems to have less usable freezer space instead of more. I have moved my ice cream maker liners to the freezer in the garage, however.

Anyway, I'm considering getting a Dymo labeler, especially since I could use it to print stamps. I should have freezer tape, however, since I have freezer paper, and that is easy to write on.

I worked in labs for many years and always had access to scientific labeling tape. I suspect that it may be freezer tape but since I don't know what that is, I am probably wrong. Any way, it is made for storage items in refrigerators and freezers down to -90 degrees. It should stick and come off reasonably well. It comes in various colors. I see that single rolls can be gotten at Amazon.

I don't have a problem with the masking tape falling off, I have a roll of Duck brand masking tape, it's a new roll and it works fine for sticking...this is what I don't like about using roll tape; when I want to write on the label, I have to stick it on the container to be able to write and it's not always a flat surface to write on and end up writing on humps. If I had an actual label, I could just put it on the counter top and write then peel if off and stick it on the container. I know PICKY PICKY...HA!

Put the masking tape on the counter, write on it, remove and place on the container. No lumps, no bumps!

I use a peel-off china marker. Very hard to find just one or two but I did get a box of 12 from Staples so I am good for 10 more years. It is like a crayon and there is a thread that you pull downward and then peel off the paper layers to get more crayon at the tip.

pkramer, that doesn't work either because the tape sticks too good and is a pain to peel off the counter and then sticking it to the counter then unsticking it reduces it's stickability to the container...HAHA!

I use freezer tape and I just write on the tap while it's still on the roll, then I know how long to cut the tape!

I also use the Avery labels because I don't care if they don't come off, I just stick the next one on right over top of it.

I write directly on the container with sharpie like Lindac. It usually scrubs right off, and, if it doesn't, rubbing alcohol takes it off in half a second.

I use painter's masking tape -- either the blue stuff or the new Frog (green) tape. It sticks on plastic containers and plastic freezer bags and comes off easily. I, too, write the label info with a Sharpie, usually while the tape is still on the roll. I try to tear off relatively nice edges, but it doesn't bother me if I get a weird edge. Of course, if the item is already frozen and chilly, I don't think anything would work. And tape doesn't work that well if you're trying to stick it on a glass casserole. I never tried freezing things in a metal pan, so I can't comment on that.

I usually write right on the container or the freezer bag, using a permanent marker.

However, I have been known to forget to label. Yup, we've had UFO's for dinner. My husband has never let me forget the time I thought I was defrosting spaghetti sauce, but he was served chili over spaghetti noodles! That was over 25 years ago, too, but we still occasionally have an unidentified frozen object for dinner.

Freezer tape and a ball point. Freezer tape looks just like masking tape except it doesn't come off in the freezer. Easy to peel off when you want to.

I use masking tape and a sharpie. Have never had any problem with it sticking to the counter or coming off in the freezer.

Well I was really hoping to find an actual label but I guess it's not that big of a deal. I'll just keep on using the masking tape I have made by DUCK because it sticks just fine in the freezer, it's never once come off. I don't know about other cheap/off brands, maybe those fall off. I was going to buy some freezer tape at the hardware store made by Scotch but it looked exactly like masking tape about twice the price for half as much so I'll just stay with a roll of Duck masking tape and a sharpie for now. I just can't see buying those labels I found on the Internet for $11.00 when a roll of tape is just a couple bucks.

I use the zip lock freezer containers, and mine are numbered. Those numbers go in my book, with the content, and the freezing date.

I usually "shop" for my dinners from the book. Of course, I try to pull out the oldest... but sometimes that doesn't work. Food that gets pulled from the freezer gets marked out in the book.

No need to write on the container each time.

I have a mystery item in a Tupperware container in the freezer right now. The masking tape came off and I don't know where that disappeared to either. Another mystery. I usually use freezer zip lock bags and write with a Sharpie right on the bag. I always put the date too so it doesn't stay there for years. (I know you're suppose to clean out the freezer on a regular schedule but who does. Don't answer that! LOL)
