More progress on our Barker cherry kitchen...
Comments (13)Your cabinets are beautiful and look great so far. Really enjoying your picture progress. It looks really great. That was truly a leap of faith ordering 18 cabinets! I was terrified just ordering two. Way to go! I just received my laundry room cabinets from Barker. I am very pleased with them. We still have to put them together but we mocked them up and they are perfect. We need help pulling out the washer and dryer in a very tight space so waiting for that and then a couple of modifications for clearance of the W/D hookups and we will be ready for the counter top people. Can't wait. The hardest part for me was measuring and being sure I was ordering the right things. I guess I did it right!...See MoreBarker cabinet doors with Ikea cabinets? Has anyone done this?
Comments (11)You may absolutely purchase Ikea cabinets without doors either online or in person, whichever you prefer. Each cabinet is really a collection of, say,10 items, each with a part #. At the store, a kitchen person will add the cabinet you want in a Harlig door, for example, and then go in and just remove the door, leaving the other 9 items in your cart. If you go this route, double check size, configuration, and frame color (birch or white) while they're typing it in. Mistakes happen. If you're doing this online, simply select the item you want in the configuration you want, and click on the "Show dimensions, weight and article numbers" link. Then copy each article number into the search button at the top of the page, and the item will appear. Buy it online. Repeat with the next 9 part #s. When you come to a door, just don't buy it. GW is great for some types of info, but you should really check out the Ikeafans web site for more guidance. In order to use Barker doors, you will need the measurements for the doors. You can find these on the Ikea web site if you look hard enough, or you can check out the Ikeafans link below. You'll have to look up info on hinge cup cut out size and location. Barker will cut them wherever you want them, but you need to know what to select/ask for. It is worth comparing the cost of a Barker Cabinet vs. Ikea/Barker Door. For ordinary cabs there's not that big a savings to be had with Ikea. For tall pantry/oven cabinets, or corner cabinets, the difference is substantial. Also, when ordering through Barker Door, make sure to take note of the maximum door width that differs among styles. Good Luck! Comments (5)Thanks everyone. Glad you liked the flutes (I think that's what they are called - or are they?) on each side of the sink. We were originally aiming for a 3-inch bump out, but due to plumbing issues, etc, we are only bumping out by 1.5 inches. Although I was not happy about that part, I still think it looks quite nice. We are so excited to come home and see the progress. We are getting simple bar pulls (see below) More pictures to follow......See MoreCabinets installed! Island progress.
Comments (12)Heating the island is just like heating a tile floor. We got the idea from Fine Homebuilding magazine. Also, one of the guys on This Old House did it. If you have hot water heat you can use hot water. We don't so we are using the same electric mats we used under our bathroom floors. Basically you embed the mat in thinset and then tile over. Or in this case lay the granite over it. In the winter the granite in our bathroom is cold. I don't have to lean on it so it doesn't matter. In the kitchen the island will be our breakfast, quick meal, and hang out spot. I don't want to be cold. We keep our house pretty warm, 70 - 72 degrees but leaning on cold granite still is chilling. Plus it will cool down your coffee or tea. We don't plan on making the granite warm, just taking the chill off. I doubt anyone will touch it and notice anything unless they touched the permiter counter first. It will be programmed to go on and off at different times just like our bathroom floors. I will let everyone know how it feels during winter! The plastic duct came with the range hood. I don't have a gas stove and don't do any high heat frying so I can't imagine our stove would generate that much heat to cause any issues but I will check it out. Thanks for mentioning it....See Morestealthecrumbs
