Barker Cabinets - Who Has Them?
Comments (23)rmgoetz, for our pullout pantry, we ordered a Barker tall cabinet with door. We already had the Ikea pullout pantry. We detached the pullout shelves from the Ikea unit and reattached them to the Barker unit, and didn't need any additional hardware (we had ordered the door without hardware in any case). So the cabinet box and door were from Barker, and the shelves and their hardware were Ikea. For the rest of our cabinets, we used all components from Barker. And scrappy25, if you're still checking this thread!, I think the RTA cabinetmakers commonly offer unfinished drawer boxes, as it's an easy thing to do at home and will save quite a bit of money (why we're doing RTA in the first place). Scherr's offers them finished or unfinished, for example. It took me the better part of a week to get all my drawer boxes finished (two coats of Osmo). It was easy, and only time consuming because there were so many. It does look like at Barker, if you choose the clearcoat option for the doors and drawer fronts, they also clearcoat the drawer boxes -- something to check on, if you think you'd want that....See MoreHas anyone ever done sliding doors on their base cabinets?
Comments (11)I had 4 sliding doors on the island base cabinets in a very narrow galley kitchen. Each door was about 2' wide. They did what I needed them to do which was be out of the way when open. The downside (or upside, depending on how you view it) was that they were mostly open when I was prepping a meal. It made things easy and the galley was so narrow that the business side of the island, which looked pretty messy with the doors open, was not visible to the rest of the room. It looks like you have plenty of room for swinging doors and I would not recommend sliders in your kitchen where they would be visible....See MoreHas anyone used the Torhamn cabinet fronts from Ikea?
Comments (9)I have seen them in person, but at the time I was paying more attention to the function of the cabinets and their interior fittings. I agree that the chicken wire look of the glass cabinets is a bit unattractive, but I can see one benefit is that it makes it easier to arrange the shelves -- you don't have to match the shelves to the glass rails. The doors themselves do seem well made....I wonder if painting them would be possible, and maybe cheaper than buying something from Semihandmade ... It does seem a shame that there's not a plain wood shaker. Anyway, I'm familiar with the many companies offering fronts to Ikea cabinets, I was just interested in seeing real life pictures of THIS style. :) I put "Torhamn" in Instagram and came up with a handful of pictures from a couple. who have used that style in their kitchen renovation. It looks really nice! It works because they have very few uppers and their kitchen has beautiful light. The pattern doesn't seem overwhelming at all....See MoreHas anyone done a appliance garage like this with their IKEA cabinets?
Comments (0)So a fellow Houzz'er posted their new kitchen and I really like their microwave "garage" and how the door pulled out and up! We planned to do a Sektion hi-cab for a built in oven and microwave. I would like to still go with the same hi-cab, but i want to put a drawer front over a standard countertop microwave. I'm sure i can figure out the hardware and modify the drawer front and cabinet to work, but i'd thought i'd ask to see if someone has already done it....See Moreeam44
