OK, I Admit it...

I'm a cheapskate. So I just finished cleaning up the sewing room (I finished the Bear's Paw quilt) and I'm looking at all these narrow strips of batting that got trimmed off. Does anyone out there do something really nifty with them to prevent from tossing them? I've sewn larger ones together to make a full batt but I'm not completely insane so I won't be doing that with these. I also don't do a lot of other crafts to use it. I know people use it to stuff things but that's probably not in my near future. Any other ideas?

You could do a QAYG potholder or two.

Pull them apart into tufts and use them for stuffing! I've done that for stuffed animals and pillows.

Jeff, I posted on your thread about my pitifulness a couple of days ago, but it got hung up and never appeared -- and, apparently, that is as it should be. The intervening posts have moved in a better direction away from pitiful. (Except for poor floridarosez9.) As is my nature this time of year, I have been digging up roses lately, but I still don't have enough spots for the roses that need homes. So naturally, I bought more, but it was perfectly reasonable, I thought, because I was buying from my favorite nearby nursery before it changes hands. There were very few available so I basically bought any rose that was remotely capable of surviving in my garden. Alexander Hill Gray (not a problem plus he's a yellow Maman Cochet. Yippee!) and Napoleon (hopefully, these two will find places in the ground). Rose de Rescht (I've seen it growing here) and Marchesa Bocella - both will have to survive/thrive in pots. I have learned not to deceive my DH (I always get caught anyway), so I just sucked in a breathe and casually mentioned my purchase because maybe prices will go up plus I had them shipped which was cheaper than gasoline. I think it was the next day that I mentioned I was running out to dig up two roses before it got dark. Probably poor DH is very confused at this point. Sherry

Andrea... As several others have mentioned... Welcome to the Club! I spent quite a bit of money on some more expensive varieties last fall, and told my DH that I wouldn't need to buy any more plants. I said that with the newer varieties, I would be perfectly happy just start to start crossing my own. And I held out... I didn't order any other fans, didn't even look when people here started talking about sales. Then I had to put a special grouping together for my Mother last week. I was looking for specific DL's, and found them on Maryott's, Ridaught's, and Browns Ferry Gardens. All were having incredible sales, so OF COURSE IT WOULDN'T HURT TO LOOK.............. Mind you, I have almost 1 1/2 acres that is fully landscaped (and I mean FULLY... can't squeeze any more plants into any of my beds without removing something.) I do have a large area of lawn, but it is off limits as we are eventually planning on building our house there. And now somehow over the last week I have around 40 new DL's coming........don't know quite how it happened, but it's a done deal at this point. I guess that the woods are going to have to be pushed out a little bit further on one side or the other! The good thing is that I am lucky enough to have a DH that is wonderful as well (not quite as good as yours as I have to build my own beds :), but he's still a keeper ), and he just smiles at me and shakes his head. He is definitely not a gardner, but he still enjoys sharing at least my seedling beds because I am so excited about them. I don't know what I would do if he wasn't so tolerant of my addiction! Actually, I guess I would just have to do what a member on the rose forum once posted.....sneak out in the middle of the night to plant. After all, how is he going to notice one more plant more or less? :) Thank goodness it hasn't come to that ...............SO FAR........... Happy Planting! Julie

I came across a strange little patch of completely and perfectly white bluebells years ago. They were surrounded by the usual blue variety so they really made a statement! I carried an old washtub down there and carefully dug several large clumps to transplant here and after all these years they still haven't spread too much. And yes, they still bloom snow-white. Naturally, I refer to them as my whitebells... Speaking of native blooms, I read that tradescantia (spiderwort) is notoriously hardy and easily propogated but they have been a large disappointment so far for me. Maybe this is because I initially relied on stock that I bought from a dealer instead of simply relocating some from the woods around here. I didn't think I wanted to dig up any of the stuff right here because most things do best right where they are without some human trying to 'improve' things, but maybe I should stick with a strictly local variety. If I dig a few tradescantia plants for my native bed here closer to the house, will they recover soon enough as I have read? And I'm talking about my own property and not just going about willy-nilly digging up stuff all across the county...

Ok, here's a prelim pic of wallpaper vs. trim color and Lascatx is 100% right (duh!) about the 2 shades lighter or darker for trim! "Is there a "10 Commandments of Decorating" sticky anywhere on the site for feebs like me? Now, the trim color looks a lot lighter in the pic and kinda/sorta ok in the pic. In real life 'tho, it's bleh! 1 shade lighter. It needs to be Much. Darker. (I don't want white/off white trim 'cuz I think it would be too much contrast...'tho I have some downstairs, maybe I'll try it on some baseboard...)

Rita - if you don't want to keep them but want them to go to a good cause, there are people that sew beds for animal shelters and are always looking for filling for them.

I second Sue's idea, shelters always have a need.
Pot holders are another option.

Sew them into larger pieces and use them as dust cloths or swiffers for the floors.

I love the pet rescue idea but unfortunately I've been using 80/20 poly/cotton batting. Since animals are prone to chewing up and eating the batting I wouldn't want to take the chance of one of them swallowing any amount of polyester. In fact when I made my darling dog's quilt I didn't use any batting in it for that reason, I just backed it with fleece. So, I didn't think of potholders, I probably have some orphan blocks hiding somewhere. Thanks.

The polyester could be a problem with pot holders, too.

Judging by the good health of two dogs that ate chunks out of two quilts I've made, polyester doesn't bother them at all. LOL They both contained Hobb's 80/20 batting. Isn't most fleece polyester too?

I give my small batting pieces to my S-I-L as she does embroidery machine work and makes stuffed animals for the kids in our family. If you are not going to use the pieces I would encourage you to donate them to your local library children's activities or donate to Goodwill stores, I would not throw them away.

I've used that batting in multiple layers for pot holders. Worked like a charm. Just don't set them down on hot burners....ask me how I know...

I sew them together to make practice quilting pieces, and if they are really small use them to clean my machines of dust and extra oil.

My dogs have had a variety of items extracted from their tummies... Dogs have the most remarkable systems...They would even consume Jen's Scrappy melted pot holder ... Lol!

I stuffed it into a bag and threw it in the closet. BTW, that potholder looks like a monster's lips!

I know I laugh at near tragedy and I got a good chuckle from your pic. I use them for swiffers, and I don't find it hard to piece for a baby quilt or lap quilt for the nursing home.
