The DH thinks I have finally gone off the deep end!

Well I would like to Thank all of you for enabling my addiction. The DH on the other hand is cursing all of you. :)

I started with 3 unknown day lilies at the beginning of spring. I now have over 60 named and more on the way that he doesn't know about yet. (I hope to get them planted before he gets home and hopefully he won't notice.) I also purchased seeds from eBay and now on the LA looking...oh ok I admit it, I'm bidding also.

Even though I already had 7 flower beds full of Hosta's, Asiatic Lilies, Irises, and many other plants. He was nice enough to till me up a new bed 4 feet wide and over 50 ft long for all the DL's and my seedling crosses. Now I have to tell him that it is full of DL's and I need another one for all the seeds I have coming and my crosses. Not to mention the 18 oriental lily bulbs I have coming. He is going to send me to a mental hospital when I tell him.

I've told him 4 times this year I was done buying DL's this year that I just wanted to concentrate on crossing what I had. All four times I got on here and someone was talking about how Maryott's was having a BOGO and Homestead had a great sale and White Top on Ebay and Aren't I Pretty Daylilies had a Sale. Not to mention all the others I actually controlled myself from buying from...so far... I have controlled myself. I don't know what I'm going to do this winter. He's going to have to take the computer away.

I started canning to get away from the computer but I find myself taking breaks just to get online and look at DL's and parentage and thinking of possible crosses and what they could result in. If he knew how much I actually thought about DL's he would have had me committed way back in June.

He's on Vacation next week and I don't know how I'm going to hide any DL's that come in then. Please tell me I'm not the only one who tries to hide DL purchases.

Well, we know that you have not gone off the deep end. In fact, you are perfectly normal around here. Many of us have no more lawn to dig up.

It sounds as if your garden was already quite stunning to begin with. Now with the new daylilies, it will be even better next year.

Hi Andrea,

At least you're not alone. I'm right in there with you. I too have gone waaaaay overboard buying daylilies.

Fay came and I have to wait for the ground to dry out before I plant the order I temporarily put in a pot, the 2 orders that came today that that are soaking in weak bleach before I pot them. And I have one coming this morning Fedex and a order for 30 labels coming from Oakes...a poor start, but it is a start. I also have a couple of big doggies coming. Clown Parade and Flying Trapeze (at least I hope it is coming. I have a huge Maryott's order and a huge Marrietta order coming in September.

I feel your pain Andrea...I fell your pain.

I tried to find out this morning if crepis rubra was known as a pink dandelion, but I couldn't find anything, at least on a fairly quick google search. I grew crepis rubra two years ago, and was a bit underwhelmed. The blooms were really quite lovely, but also really quite tiny, not dandelion-sized at all. (Well, at least not the size of the dandelions in MY yard, lol). I'd say not more than a 1/2 inch in diameter, if even that big. The plants were a bit scraggly and weak too, and taller and more spindly than what I would think of as daffodils. But now I wonder that if it *is* related to the dandelion, maybe having it in a pot with good quality potting soil was too rich for it! It was really a pretty little bloom though, and after seeing fledgling's photo, and looking at crepis photos, maybe I'll give it another try - but this time in poorer soil! That is, of couse, unless someone can actually find out exactly what fledgling's pink dandelion is - then I'll grow that! :) Dee

Congrats! Doesn't it feel good and comfortable when thoughts and imagined images finally fall into place? That range corner looks primed for some real drama. We await the ideas for it. It's not too late to insert either side of the range in your plan... a carved wooden oversized salad spoon and fork set, ...or a macrame plant hanger, ...or a gingham check teddy bear and white goose wallpaper border. But then, I suppose you will be impertinent enough to come up with your own idea.

Ok now I think I get it too- you are just showing as a point of reference how the rooms play off of each other, and are thinking that in addition to doing the kitchen, you would also do the fireplace wall and the wall perpendicular to it(facing the kitchen).... I think that sounds good, but being the cautious type, I think maybe have that in mind but first just do the kitchen - I do think that will look great. And, chances are doing it in the family room will be nice as well, but you might just decide that it could be too much... so I would wait and do one step at a time. Of course , that is my bias because I frequently don't see the obvious and need time to "digest". To repeat though, I do think the larger tiles in the latest rendition will be wonderful in your kitchen. (I believe we have a winner!) :)

I have not scheduled surgery yet and am ignoring the suggestion of having them both done at once. When I was a newly graduated RN I worked ortho for a year ( some disasters but hips have come along way) and my mom had a horrible hip replacement outcome, so I am putting it off for as long as I can. Don't wait so long you are too out of shape ... it's best done while you are still reasonably spry with muscle strength left for rehab instead of totally crippled and weak. And before you have wrecked the surrounding support muscles and tendons compensating for the pain and lack of mobility. (SO has a prosthetic knee, his brother has 2 of them, and another brother has a hip replacement he loves). Yes, it's come a LONG ways, even using 3-d imaging and custom manufacture of the prosthetics if needed. They can build a copy of the joint, figure out exactly how things need to be altered and dry-fit the prosthesis without ever lifting a scalpel.

Oh my gosh Andrea - I laughed so hard reading this, it is like looking in the mirror - for so many of us!! I myself crossed over to 'the dark side' of the force just last year!! LOL!! We started with just a 1/16 acre little yard, I took over the steep hillside for new fans, then took out the side lawn for new seeds coming, then made a cutout in the back lawn for more seeds coming. We have since moved to (thank god) a 1/3rd acre and my DH and I had to move all my now large, grown seedlings!! The good news is they all have been selling, so my DH got very excited (money will do that!) and said that I could now buy some more for next year. OH NO she's on the loose!! I stay up till 2pm on the computer searching for crosses and can't sleep thinking about my own possible crosses!!

I have been able to get my DH into pollinating the DL's and a little excited himself to see what the crosses turn our like next year! But I did go through the "hiding the fans" dance - believe me!

Haven't created my own seeds yet - can hardly wait!!

Oh No I can't hide them.... Thanks to Neal from White Top the part of the bed for DL's is full. Neal sent 4 and 6 fans instead of the 2 fans per plant. I'm not complaining I love extra DL's it just took up a lot more space than I had thought it would.

Plus,I still have another 10 coming in September. Guess I'll have to plant those 10 in part of the area where I was going to put the Oriental Lily Bulbs which are coming in October. If I do that and make a whole new bed for the Orientals that leaves more room for DL's LOL!!!!!!! Oh he really is going to have me committed.

Hope I can start selling some next year Chris. I think that would get him interested. He wouldn't hesitate to dig up the rest of the 3 acres if we could make a little money from my hobby.

It is nice to know I'm not alone even if some of you won't publicly admit anything.

Well guess I'll cook him a big dinner and hopefully it won't be to bad when I tell him I need another flower bed.

Andrea - 3 acres - you're in SOOOO MUCH TROUBLE! (Or at least I'd be if I had a whole 3 acres....:))

The LA is a lovely place to trade/sell your DL's next year - I've met the greatest people through this process. And if you start your own seed crosses - you won't believe how popular the seeds are! We're all trying for a totally blue DL - who will be the first one to do it!?

Your DH will get used to the obsession - mine's even starting to learn the names of my favorite DL's!

Hello and welcome to "Hemaholics Anonymous". My son helps me or I wouldn't be able to do much, God bless him. I figured out how to afford my addictions, I sell extra fans and seeds. Now I'm buying even more for next year while I am still complaining every day about the constant watering. My yard looks like Gardenfantasies only more. I have pots EVERYWHERE. I am presently going to larger pots because of the intense watering. Whiskey barrel size pots can hold 3 varieties, until they get too big, when they get too big you sell some LOL.
Andrea please just tell him you can make money from your dayliles, money talks. I explained very gently to my son that grass is fine but it takes water and doesn't make me ANY money. He understood that clearly. Now he just helps me any way he can and faithfully waters his watering assignments. OK now off to do my share of the watering, come on fall.

Well the man does love me!!! He just said "Where do you want the new bed? I'm off next week so we can fix it then." I am definitely one lucky woman. He even ask how my seeds were doing that I started last week. I think he will be hooked next year when everything starts blooming. If he gets hooked I won't have a yard left. Not sure the old back can take all that weeding. LOL

Oh and I busted my daughter, who is 12, on the computer yesterday. She was on Tinker's comparing DL's and making her want list. LOL I think I'll have the DH make a small bed just for her and get a few that are on her list for her B-day.

As several others have mentioned... Welcome to the Club! I spent quite a bit of money on some more expensive varieties last fall, and told my DH that I wouldn't need to buy any more plants. I said that with the newer varieties, I would be perfectly happy just start to start crossing my own. And I held out... I didn't order any other fans, didn't even look when people here started talking about sales.

Then I had to put a special grouping together for my Mother last week. I was looking for specific DL's, and found them on Maryott's, Ridaught's, and Browns Ferry Gardens. All were having incredible sales, so OF COURSE IT WOULDN'T HURT TO LOOK..............

Mind you, I have almost 1 1/2 acres that is fully landscaped (and I mean FULLY... can't squeeze any more plants into any of my beds without removing something.) I do have a large area of lawn, but it is off limits as we are eventually planning on building our house there. And now somehow over the last week I have around 40 new DL's coming........don't know quite how it happened, but it's a done deal at this point. I guess that the woods are going to have to be pushed out a little bit further on one side or the other!

The good thing is that I am lucky enough to have a DH that is wonderful as well (not quite as good as yours as I have to build my own beds :), but he's still a keeper ), and he just smiles at me and shakes his head. He is definitely not a gardner, but he still enjoys sharing at least my seedling beds because I am so excited about them. I don't know what I would do if he wasn't so tolerant of my addiction!

Actually, I guess I would just have to do what a member on the rose forum once posted.....sneak out in the middle of the night to plant. After all, how is he going to notice one more plant more or less? :) Thank goodness it hasn't come to that ...............SO FAR...........

I love it! I got my Munson order today with 12, and I have two large orders coming from Marietta and Maryottt's and three single daylily orders out too. Of course I have fifteen out there that I already potted since Fay made this clay soil too wet to work. And now they say Gustov is going to rain on my parade too.

As for how this happened? I can't resist a picture of a lovely daylily that I don't have, and that includes most of them. that's how it happened for me. My DH just shakes his head, but he can't stand for me to work alone, so he is "supposed" to be getting the tiller ready to use. We'll see, but I won't wait on him.
