Does anyone use kitchen canisters on their counters anymore?
Comments (35)Talley, good luck with the canister decision. I had an adorable inherited cookie jar that I loved, but we stopped eating cookies, and I was deeply conflicted about keeping it-couldn't think of anything else to store there (still had the canisters at that point). However, the lid fell off while I was cleaning it one day, and sadly broke in many pieces. So that was that, away it went-and I was spared a little guilt along the way since it was very precious to the person who gave it to me as well. And as an aside, my Martha Stewart P-Touch died this morning. Remember? : ) Purchased in 2003? We will try to repair it (we think there is a short in the wiring since it flashes the words P-Touch then completely stops working but after a lot of re-plugging in and fiddling with the adaptor cord, it might start again, maybe but increasingly not), but if not, will replace it. We used it just yesterday and it was hard to keep the power on but we made five nice labels for our car files. Fifteen years of flawless label making, such a godsend! Any recommendations? Thanks!...See MoreConsidering downsizing Advice desperately needed!
Comments (21)We moved to a condo five years ago (for half the year). It's 1900 sq feet, 3 br, 2 bath and we thought we'd live here for a lot more years. We got a dog who hates downtown because of the noise. Additionally because it's a high rise, we can't barbecue and I can't garden. Plus, we discovered that while we think things need to be redone (such as making our outdated windows energy efficient as well as impact resistant (we live in FL), the majority of the condo owners don't think it's important. And our condo fees keep rising. So we decided to look for a house. We found land walking distance to downtown in a quiet residential area. We will build a 2600 sq foot home on a 6100 sq foot lot. I will be able to barbecue, garden and we'll have our own pool, which means I don't have shlep everything downstairs just to go for a swim. I will also have an oversized art studio to work in. For us it is a lateral move in terms of what we sell this place for vs what we pay for our build, but we'll save a lot because we won't have the monthly condo fees which are high in our building. Interesting when my parents were in their mid 50's back in the early 80's they decided to sell their colonial home in a desirable neighborhood and they bought a larger home on 2 acres in a more desirable neighborhood. They bought a ranch home. I asked my Mom back then why a ranch since she loved colonials. She said, "we're not getting any younger and we have to think of the future." They then redid the home adding a master suite and were happy in that house for many years. For them, a bigger home that was on one level, looking out on their gardens was what made my parents happy. Decide what it is you want. Don't figure you'll be saving money so much as changing your lifestyle to suit the next phase of your life....See MoreHelp! Bathroom advice desperately needed
Comments (48)This bathroom is Late Modernism. The undermounted sink in laminate (which usually fails because of water infiltration into the substrate) is late 70s or 80s at the earliest. (The house may be older). So you have to be careful with regards to using midcentury hardware and such. Most of the hardware shown, boomerangs and sparkles etc. are pre-1960 in origin. This bathroom currently looks like what it is supposed to look like. Although it may be an update for the house, this bathroom looks like it did when it was put in and hasn't been updated so it looks as about authentic as it can get. The countertop looks like there may be some damage and separation of the laminate around the rim of the sink, which is typical to this sort of installation, and the faucet is not right. If it is damage, I would replace the countertop with the 20xx's version of what's there, something white with a white sink, get a faucet that is better suited to the vanity and call it done. I would not waste money tarting it up in some faux retro or half-hearted millennial modernism. If someone hates the bathroom as it is, tarting it up won't be enough, and if someone mostly likes it, tarting it up could ruin it for them....See MoreIs it possible to decorate with porcelain, crystal and silver anymore?
Comments (31)A Craftsman house in my area in the 1920's or so would have had a treasured item or three displayed on the dining table. Curtains would have been opened all the way to make the sunlight brighten the room. Try picking three new items per month to rotate on display. Another Craftsman display feature was a plate rail. And of course, there are many wall mounted curio shelves with glass doors that can be installed at eye level for your LLadro and Beleek. Add battery operated LED lights that are motion activated if you have a dark room. Some people use their Beleek to hold flowers or as catch-alls on the kitchen window sill. It works for some people who don't have rambunctious sink users. A bit of museum putty may help the stability....See Moremaddielee
