Uncollecting: What to do with old leaded crystal
Comments (43)I think you're putting words in the mouth of this thread, lindac92. The fact that no amount of lead is particularly safe (although there is a 'safe' level established for drinking water, because there has to be) to consume, does not mean that everyone who was exposed to lead in earlier times 'has no brain.' Lead exposure does statistically increase the chance of negative health effects. It's one of the most well-documented toxins in terms of its measured effect on humans, because so many people were (and are) exposed to it. As for me, I still use my leaded glasses on occasion. I'm in my 50s and have very low exposure otherwise. I would not use leaded glass for children, and do not use it on a daily basis in any case. I wouldn't put wine in a crystal decanter and let it sit and drink it the next day or the day after that. I would not serve a child orange juice in a crystal glass (who does that anyway?). I think this is a sensible approach. YMMV....See MoreRemember the Old SILVER Christmas Trees?
Comments (17)Thank you for posting about the silver Christmas tree. I have very fond memories of my Nana and Grandpa's silver Christmas tree with blue balls hung on them and the color wheel. I have a picture of my grandmother in a very pretty red dress with the mink stole my grandfather gave her for Christmas sitting next to the silver tree with blue balls. When my grandfather passed I took a box of the blue balls with me. My tree is decorated red and white, but I always hang one blue ball to honor my grandparents. It sticks out and I love it! Good times....See MoreDoes anyone put heat lamps into bathrooms anymore?
Comments (59)Sure, Build.com and other sites sell them. Found one in about two minutes. Here But they are not going to work for a sloped ceiling. No one probably makes one that swivels like you would need for that application. Heat in a radiant form, as in a light bulb heater, travels in a straight line and you will be heating whatever surface the ceiling pitch has the bulb pointing at. You need to build out a triangular box to put the fixture in. You can drywall it so that it is not as obvious as mine was. It is not a great picture, but in the upper left side of the photo you can see the maple triangular box that gives my light fixture a level surface to hang on....See MoreNo Market for China Anymore? Advice Needed
Comments (21)"She's not trying to get rich, but I think she'd like it to go to someone who really will treasure it and does not want to just leave it at Goodwill. It is a full service for 8 with platters, gravy boat, etc." Leafy, I'm feeling crabby today-fair warning! I always get a bit impatient at this kind of attitude because the bottom line is SHE DOESN'T WANT IT EITHER. Having read some pop psychology :), I'm familiar with the mindset that any possession is intrinsically viewed as having value simply due to one's ownership. It does seem to apply here. I mean, if this was such a wonderful treasure wouldn't she just keep the china herself? And if she is downsizing and deciding she doesn't treasure it enough to keep, then who cares what happens to it? I find this such a frustrating attitude, and I am guilty of it myself. The whole 'it's too good to throw out' or 'someone should value it since it's so special--just not me' or 'there's plenty of use left' or 'it cost X, I can't just give it away'. Arrghhhhh...source of way, way too much clutter and useless stuff piled up in our homes. Ok, taking my crabby bad self offline now. Hope I didn't offend everyone too badly. Ann...See MoreKitty Walton
