At 5'8" I wouldn't have a problem with it. The only problem you run into is possibly hanging ceiling fans. Low ceilings bother some people, but not others.

The way I look at it, it's easier to paint the ceilings for one. Also less to heat.

Seems sort of weird. Is there a reason? Is there another damaged ceiling under that one? I think it won't bother some people and will bother others. Will depend on the market when you decide to sell whether it will be something that people will overlook.

Per building codes in Texas, the ceiling height shall not be less than 7'6". I don't think you're looking at anything out of the ordinary.
Remember, the higher the ceiling the higher the heating and, to a lesser degree, the cooling costs.

Well being in the area you are at I still think there is a lot of new construction going on and a lot of those will have 9ft ceilings even on 2nd floor so take that into consideration that you'll be in competition with those when needing to sell. Also that is a very unusual height for TX. Is this an old home? Ie historic or close to it?

I personally like taller ceilings.

Ours are 7'8" through the whole house and don't seem unusually low, but I know most of the newer construction has higher ceilings. This was built in early '60's and was the norm.

We do have ceiling fans, but used the low profile. Sandy

jyotim - then the ceiling height doesn't make sense. I think you'll have a problem for re-sale vs. other comparables. How long has it currently been for sale?

yeah it is in market for 6 months in total but was taken out few times for couple of weeks.

It's possible that it could later be a selling point if things go the way Tricia said it would in a post a few months ago. She said that the McMansions would be a thing of the past as builders start building homes that are more "green" and smaller.

FWIW, My son is close to 6ft, the rest of us are from 5'4" to 5'8" and don't have a problem in houses with 7 ft ceilings. For some reason ceiling height varies around here, depending on when it was built.

Find out from your agent if there were contracts already on the house. It almost sounds like there were, and for some reason fell through.

roselvr - that ceiling height is not normal for the area. 8' is normal and 9' is starting to become the norm. Especially for a house built in 2001 even on the 2nd story.

Sure would investigate the reason for why the ceiling is so low. Somebody mentioned covering something up and that sounds plausible for that age house.

jyotim - just keep in mind that if you buy it you'll likely have to put it on the market for a long time too just like the current owner and sell it for less money than the competition, so make sure you're willing to do that and that you do get it for a lot less now.

I don't want to take anything that is unusual in the area.
I'm also finding one another house that meets our requirement but it is 1996 built so 11yrs old.Since we are first time buyer so don't know what kind of problems we possibly can have with the age of the house. However most of the house in that area 10-15 yrs old and very few are under 10yrs,but yes they are higher in prices. Please suggest me .

No matter the age, you will want a good inspection, as you can have problems with a house of any age. Some people have terrible problems with newly built homes. A home built in 1996 is still fairly young in the big picture. The water heater may need replacing before long. Some appliance may showing some age. But the basic systems should be okay in most houses of that age for a while longer. Of course everything ages in every house and must be maintained or replaced periodically. You could ask for a home warranty to shield you from large expenses during your first year (or two depending on the warranty).
