My Mom has come to visit! (long)

Some of you will remember my Mom. You helped pray for her when she was ill. Joyful came to her house to sit with me when she was in surgery, and Ivamae came to visit her when she returned home from the hospital. You've seen a picture of her when she was all dolled up at age 85, and prayed for her again when she was ill at other times. I can't thank you all enough!

Well, she's 89 now and looks great, but is once again having health issues, bad ones. It looks like this may be her last trip to Ontario. Please send good thoughts that she doesn't suffer with pain if the end is near, or if it's fixable, that she feels better soon.

Today, I took her to her home town for a visit with some relatives. While there, we went to visit my Dad's grave. I sat her in her wheelchair in front of him, cleaned up the headstone,etc., and then we had a little picnic lunch together, sitting there, with wine glasses for our water. We toasted my Dad, and Mom chatted with him for a bit. I don't know if she was saying goodbye, or that she'd probably be with him soon.

This sounds very maudlin, but really it was a lovely day. We got to see some people who meant a lot to her, and the weather was perfect. We came home happy but tired.

She stays with me for another few days, then my DB is having her for a nice visit for a few days, and he plans to take her up to the Bruce Peninsula to visit other relatives and to see the old stone cottage that she and Dad built. The people who own it now are very nice and will allow her to come in to see it again.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that Mom was here, and thinks my new house is as cute a can be. I'm thrilled she was able to come one last time. I'll probably visit her out west a couple of times in the next few months.

I'm rambling on, so I'll stop now. Thanks for listening, and thanks for your good thoughts and prayers.

Laurel, how nice to have a lovely day with your Mother. My Mom passed away last November at aged 96 and I think of her every day. I would love to have another day with her. Treasure your time with your Mother. Judy

AWWWWW.....How sweet! Enjoy your mom while you still can.My mom passed away 5 years ago one day after her 88th birthday.I still miss her so much. I pray that your mom will have many more days,months,years and that whatever time she has left will be happy and peaceful.

Thanks for responding to my post. I planted them in what used to be my veggie garden. I have let it lie fallow for the last year as I have been building up the soil with lots of compost and manure. The Lillies should love it!I put them all in yesterday and last night slept the sleep of the innocent! It was a red letter day. Helen

You need to make it a little better than its competition, whatever you decide. If it's an as-is, it should be the best as-is in the area. If it's a fixed-up ranch house, it should be the best fixed up ranch house in the area. I personally prefer to fix places up before I sell them. There's value in any work you do. You can figure out what a house like that would sell for in its current state, and then what it would sell for if you painted it, refinished the hardwood floors, fixed the bathrooms. I bet it would be worth fixing. If you could post pictures, we could give you ideas. I agree with what someone said about painting the paneling creamy white, not builder's white. I've painted paneling before and used a warm cream color. It looked fantastic. Do a careful job on the paneling otherwise it will look like cheap painted paneling. Use the right primer. What state are you in?

Custody and access are two seperate things. BD has always had joint custody. It's called joint conservators. He has not always had access. He had supervised access. Joint conservatorship basically means we both have exclusive rights and duties to the child. I have two exclusive rights he does not have. The right to designate residence and the right to make educational decisions. We both have the right to seek medical treatment, provide shelter, food and clothing; the right to inform the other conservator of any info concerning health, welfare and education. We both have the right to religious guidance. He has a duty I do not have and that is to provide child support payments in X amount per month. As far as access it's about 60/40 now. It's called expanded standard possession. He has set weekends and days of the week, we split spring break, christmas and thanksgiving. He has superior rights to designate his access during the summer. My access is all other times not outlined as his possession time. Sole custody is extremely hard to get. Even with all of the mess we have been through, bd has always been a joint conservator he just had limited Access for a while. If I had sole custody I would not have to tell him anything about health, school etc. He would not be able to confer with the school. Even with limited access he still had a right to speak to teachers or to get medical records. With expanded standard possession during the school year, on a month with 30 days, Bd has 12 days, I have 18 days. During the summer he averages about 40 total days and I average about 46 give or take a few during a summer break of about 88 days. That almost 50:50 during the summer. Does that make sense?

I'm so glad your mom was able to visit. A graveside picnic is a wonderful way to remember and honor your dad. I don't think it's maudlin at all. I'll keep your mom in my thoughts.

What a wonderful thing to do. I would never have thought of having a picnic "with your dad" and I think it's beautiful.
That is quite a memory you will have and it really made your mom feel special.

how lovely a day you must have had...

rather like the "sentimental journey" a neighbor we had took...i believe he know his condition was not going to get better..while he was able, he and his dw visited back home...it was his last trip, but one they knew was such a comfort to family...

Oh Laurel I'm sending some big soft hugs! I wondered how your mom was doing.
Mine is still fighting the big C. The meds have been worse than the disease.
I remember how much comfort you and the rest of the KT'ers have been and I think of you often. Give your sweet mom a big hug for me.

Laurel, what a wonderful day you had. I'm away behind the times. I thought your Mom had left her condo in London but didn't know where she was living. Where out west is she?

What a great day you had yesterday and so wonderful that she could tolerate it.

I so enjoyed my short time with the both of you, when I visited you at her London home. She had come from the same small town that my mother had, and she remembered my grandparents and sledding down their back yard hill.

Treasure every minute you have together and think positively. Hopefully you have many happy times together, in the future.

I'm nearing my 80th birthday and I'm not getting around nearly as much as I used to, also because of some health related issues.

Mom seems to be feeling pretty well. They think she has breast cancer, with spots on her liver and pancreas as well. She goes to see the surgeon when she returns to B.C. (She lives with my DSis out there)

Anyway, she also struggles with gastro paresis, where her stomach muscles are not moving the food along and it blocks up and causes a lot of pain. So she needs to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, and drink tons of water. It would be better if she had one liquid meal a day, but she's sick of that, so smoothies are out. One of my cousins that we visited the other day has a cherry farm, so we picked cherries and have been nibbling on them everyday and believe me, they've cleaned her out! LOL! So the last 3 nights, she's had no pain. YAY!

Sunday, we went to my DD's for Father's Day dinner, so Mom got to spend some time with my Grandsons. She had a lovely time with them.

Today she surprised me and made me take her shopping for a new table, chairs, and umbrella set for my new deck (when it gets built. Waiting for quotes now). What a surprise! I asked why and she said, "Because I can and I want to"!

She was willing to buy the best, but I managed to find something I really like on sale for less than $500.00. It was a lovely surprise and I think she enjoyed doing it as much as I enjoy getting it.

Tomorrow some of her friends are coming over for the afternoon to visit and stay for a bbq. The next day we go get our hair done together. Then she is to be picked up by my DB on Thursday for a visit with him and his wife.

Gotta go and get some sleep. Nitey nite all!
