My mom has passed away.

I don't post here often, but check messages frequently. To those who may remember me, I thank you all for your supportive words throughout the years. My mom passed away Saturday night at 8:35 pm.

She had been declining quite a bit the last two weeks. I spent Thursday and Friday with her this week and last and the entire family was here this past weekend. My eldest nephew and his wife arrived a week ago as a father's day surprise and just left this morning. My youngest nephew arrived from a school trip to Italy late Friday night. I think she waited for all her kids to be around.

Hospice was a great help as well. Only ran into a little tiff with her "Granny Nanny" caregiver on Thursday, when we started 24 hour care. Marie is a purest and doesn't believe in any medications, but when I witnessed my mother in distress, I agreed to morphine and anti-anxiety drugs to make it more peaceful for her. She repeated her beliefs that "only Jesus knows when it is your time to go" and I had to firmly tell her to back off. She has also called twice since offering to help pack up her room, etc. and I have only said thank you but we are ok.

She will be cremated and interred with my dad. We just came back from meeting with the funeral director. We're planning a small memorial service in about 2 weeks to allow out-of-town family to attend.

Thank you again. I have moments of "what do I do now" but I need to remember that she's in a much better place.

Ah, Barbara, I'm so sorry for your loss. You must also be worn out from so much emotional upheaval. Rest. Grieve with family. We always think we're responsible adults and ready for this...and we never are.

Clare, I missed seeing this earlier. I'm so sorry. Even though you weren't close physically, you had a connection. Emotions are not something we can always predict. Grief can hit unexpectedly. It did so with me when a friend passed away that I wasn't super close to, as in best friends, but we sang in choir together as altos, and I admired her greatly. Her death from cancer hit me much harder than I ever expected. It's natural. It's unfortunate you can't express it openly. I'm sure you miss being there with your DH, too. Hang in there. Marion, thanks for the kind words. Funny thing is my parents next door neighbor at their old house in Detroit is named Marion. And she was one of only a few people that called my mom on the phone to talk. My mom was blind for her last 15 years on Earth and the phone was a lifeline. I called her twice a day religiously and took her shopping (she loved to shop..even being blind..I would describe things to her and she would 'feel' them). I should call her friend Marion. Every summer I would take some of my homegrown tomatoes to her and I didn't do it this year (shame on me). Anyway, I have had several 'signs' from my mom. The first one was a couple of weeks after she passed. I was half asleep and wandered out to the kitchen in the middle of the night to get a drink. I heard a loud voice say 'DUANE'. And since I was a little groggy I said 'what?' I thought it might have been my wife. But I went back to the other end of the house and my wife was fast asleep. My mom got one word to send me from the other side. Just my name, but it was very surreal. Twice after that after awakening and lying in bed a strong smell permeated the room...it was like fresh cut flowers...very strong smelling..but natural..not perfumy. That scent stayed in the air for about a minute and a half...and as the flower scent faded I got just a whiff of fresh cinnamon. Those three events have convinced me there is another 'side' and somehow my mom was able to get the word out. Thanksgiving 2006 the family was gathered for dinner in my mom and dads basement rec room. There was a knock on the window...3 knocks actually...knock knock knock. I ran upstairs and went outside...nobody there....then the phone rang...my sister has a friend who is a renowned psychic (I don't know her name) and she called to say she had a strong message come over from my mama. She said my mom said 'nice glasses' and I like the roses. We aren't sure what the rose comment was about, but my mom always insisted on drinking her diet coke out of a glass...and we were all drinking out of tin cans (I know..on Thanksgiving?) and we are sure she was either being sarcastic about our choice of dinnerware...or not..because both my dad and I were wearing new eyeglasses..his new and I had on an old pair that was taped up (pending my new pair from the optometrist). I also had a dream where my mom was lying dead ....and I cried and begged her to return to life...and she did...and then she said to me 'Duane...it's not good'. I hope she meant it wasn't good I brought her back...and not it wasn't good on the other side. That still bothers me. All for now. We are supposed to get 7-12 inches of snow over the next day and I better make sure the snowblower is in working order. I hope everyone has a good weekend and makes it through the holiday season. Cry when you need to, but try to find joy in the season. Remember earth is just a stepping stone on our spiritual journey. This is not the end, but just the beginning. Duane

Instead of intubating my mother on Thursday, we asked the doctors to give her something to at a least help her calm down...they administered a morphine drip...she passed away on Friday morning at 11:30 am. (throughout my mother's numerous hospitalizations, I called the hospital nurses' station to ask about her progress because I was normally caring for her at home; my body clock automatically had me up at specific hours throughtout the night because i would be checking on my mom's oxygen levels, or making sure that she ate to prevent nausea.

My sincere condolences. I lost my Dad less than a week ago and am going through the same emotions. Knowing that they are at peace and in no more pain is comforting, but knowing it is all so final makes it difficult. Big hugs to you.

As one who has been through it, I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom. No matter their age or health status, it is never the time to lose our mother's. There's always so much more we could've/should've learned from them! I hope you have LOTS of good memories that will eventually let you smile! :)

I lost my mom (that chose me) at the end of April, so I know how you are feeling. Bless you, I will keep you in my prayers and as a dear friend told me There are things worse than death..That has helped me a little..mom is no longer suffering.

Mimi, I'm very sorry you lost your mother. It's a terrible loss to have to deal with. I will pray for you to find peace, and rest for your weary mind and soul. You know your Mom is happy and pain free now. It doesn't make the loss any easier to take. Take care of yourself.

And linda ut I'm also very sorry you lost your Dad. Today is my Dad's birthday, he would have been 87. He died when he was only 60. I hope you also have wonderful memories of your Dad and that you can find peace in your heart.

Take comfort that by giving your Mom the medications, you helped to dull some of her pain so the passing was easier for you. I know you did the right thing.
