Prior sales information - is it relevant?

There's a poster on another real-estate forum I frequent who's trying to find out what the current owners paid for a house he's interested in purchasing. He says it's relevant for him in order to be a fully informed consumer (I think he even says he has a right to this information). He cannot find the information in any of the current online databases - Zillow, PropertyShark, Trulia - and is asking his broker to find out.

Can someone help me understand how this information could be relevant? Aside from trying to avoid purchasing a flip - and you could eliminate that if you just asked the last sales date - how can it help to know that the current owners paid x dollars back in 1999? Or 1979? I'm truly struggling with how one would use this information.
