When you look at Ye Olde Englysshe manors and country houses you will notice that they seldom made any attempt to build in the old style or styles. So you have a Tudor center block with Georgian wings, the Georgian hunting lodge connected to the Victorian Gothik addition.

The "Mission district" was filled with what was then "cheap tract housing" ... after the Earthquake and fires they built fast and cheap just to satisfy the demand for places to live. This was not Nob Hill! And 100 years of rough living, being converted to rooming houses in WWII, then hippy crash pads in the 60s and 70s doesn't leave much to restore. I've seen and toured some "befores" in the bay area and you are lucky if there is a way to get from one floor to the next.

Working on such a project myself right now- it is a challenge to combine the historical features with modern day convenience. Interesting to me that some of the early comments from four years ago might be outdated now- white too stark? It is everywhere! And if you pick the right white- it will do wonders to cheer up those dark dark Victorian spaces!
