Any One Been to A Rummage Sale ?

Amber and I went to a nice one on Saturday at a church. Everything was $.25. She got several nice baby clothes and books. I bought books, two measuring cups, 4 cup and a 2 cup, two glass mixing bowls, a white matte Hull swan, some milk white custard cups, a Tupperware salad spinner, a milk white candy dish with lid, two new photo tins, 3 patterns, and a package of new woman's new handkerchiefs. I love going to sales like that. Have any of you been going?

SIGH..........I love going to them but the last thing my small tiny house needs is more stuff so I have been avoiding all sales lately.

I've been to not-so-great ones and some really good ones. The Catholic church here puts on a HUGE sale twice a year. I'd guess the room they hold it in is about 5000 sq feet... full of stuff. I don't go to many garage sales anymore, but I never miss this particular sale... my parents live 45 minutes away and even they drive up for this sale.

Sounds like you got some wonderful deals!!

I've had a number of patio sales that went well for me...the reason I say for "me" is that last year two friends brought things over to sell as well...I kept telling them to price low and it will go. By 11:00 am they had made just under $200 to my $700. If people see higher prices I believe it turns them off. Who cares what you paid for something...it's not worth that used. I've always advertised having things for men too (tools,etc)...it keeps the the ladies browsing longer if hubby is busy :) Consider having a box with kiddy things that are either extremely cheap or sometimes free (1 per child if free). Kids are great cutomers! I have to agree with those that mentioned plants selling well, they do! I'v put out barely used makeup items that flew off the table ..can you believe? Yet don't we all have things we've brought home, tried once never to use again? (it can be cleaned with wipes) And jewelry for sure. Bottles of water are a real money maker, especially on a hot day. If you're able, coffee in the morning. One thing that I won't put in are sheet sets...even though I tied them with nice ribbon they ended up open and strewn over the table numerous times. Unless you plan on hanging them on a hanger so people can look don't bother. Nice kitchen items (bowl sets, appliances, serving spoons) sell well. Donate cups and glasses that have no mates, for the most part they sit cluttering up a well thought out table. Keep re-arranging your area, filling in empty spaces. You'll be able to show off something that might have been overlooked at first glance. I always have music playing, usually instrumentals (no head banging)and love watching who starts tapping a toe. Signs into the home that say "family only". And always a sign at the entry that says "we love making a deal, just ask!" And there will be those return customers...the ones that are 1st to the sale, run off to the next and realize yours was the best to begin with :-D

I have had experience with it. Generally team fundraising is going to go to the team. Be it you sell ads for the tournament book or you have a bake sale; you generally just can't divide it. If you want to have a garage sale with just some families from the team for money, then do that but don't call it a team fundraiser. The biggest problem is getting the families to agree to get on board. First, you do have to make sure the families want to participate and need the money. You can't assume everyone wants to do something or wants to do a rummage sale but if you get enough help, you should be able to run with it. (You will probably never get 100% participation). To start you need to set an event and date choices (but only give them 2 choices or everyone will be fighting) go with the choice that gets enough votes. Send out an email: Hi all, We are considering hosting a rummage sale to bring in money to help defray costs for the boy's hockey team. I have checked out locations and availible are April 15 or April 23rd. Please email me back by Monday to let me know which date will work best for you (we will go with the date that gets the most votes). Since the money is going to the team we hope to have 100% participation. I will send a signup email later with different shift and work opportunities to divide up the work and help make this sale a success. (When you get responses back, you should be able to tell if your event will be a go or not... you will either get most people emailing you back with a date preferance, or you will get emails saying..."what, the???....we can't do that. Why didn't we vote. We can't help at all, etc....") You should be able to tell from the responses if enough people will be willing to help or not. But you need to organize and lead them if they seem willing. Don't do all the work yourself. If not enough people sign up to help (on your work delegated sign-up sheets), then cancel the event early on. If workers get sick, etc it is up to them to find a replacement, not you. You need to organize and delegate, not do it all -- if others don't want to help, then don't do it.

I went to a sale that my sister saw on Craigslist. I got: William A Rogers silver plated apple basket - still in box Talbots leather purse 2 new rolls of wrapping paper Oneida "Grande Cafe" 41 oz double wall brushed stainless steel carafe - new - still in box - keeps stuff hot for 6 hours (perfect for garage sales or parades! - really nice!) Hard eyeglass case with a cool design Two decorative pots for my office A recipe card holder Jenga - doesn't look used Deluxe Uno - new - still in cellophane heavy metal corn cob holders (that's what she said they were - might be pickle forks but there's a lot of them) There might be more - I can't remember. I got all of that for $10. Woo hoo!!!

went to one Sat and got four binders full of early years of Mother Earh News. 4 complete years went back and got all the single copies 37 for 10 cents each. have to catalog them all in pristine condition and the early years which I love.

Also for 5$ got a mechanics stool on wheels which I can use when sorting out things on the bottome bookshelves.
DS got a bunch of brand name shirts for 50 cents each.
Since it was a church sale let them keep the change too.

City wides were here yesterday. Awful weather though. I went to 5 or 6. 2 were total washouts. My gosh a rummage sale should have rummage sale prices!Unreal the prices people put on things sometimes. I don't mind paying extra for something in good shape, but sometimes I'd like to say get real people!
The other 3 or 4 I got nice designer clothes reasonably priced for the GB's. I had hoped so badly to find books, but none.

We love rummage sales. We went to two, over the weekend. We bought baby items (for a grandbaby due in November) and a couple of other things as well. I believe we came home with an infant car seat, a baby 'gate', a baby bath that fits in the kitchen sink, two antique washboards (one large and one small). I think that was it! We have been to several rummage sales already this spring. Seems like there are a few every weekend now. We bought some beautiful house plants at one 2-3 weeks ago!

Growing up in Indiana we called them rummage sales...you know...you're rummaging around stuff...then they became "Yard Sales"...people set up tables in their yards...now their called "Garage Sales"...I try to have one every couple of years just to keep the stuff coming and going in my house...LOL...I'm with Heather though...I can't go to any garage sales until I let some of my stuff go!!

Haven't seen a true Rummage sale in years. We do have garage sales around town starting in May when the weather gets nice. I like to shop them. Last year I bought a battery-operated waterfall planter for $2. I also like books and especially cook books.

Have you folks that are short of room considered building a small one of canvas and hanging it from a box kite, which you could fly from your back yard?
