My rummage sale finds for the day (pics)

Went to the big rummage sale this morning and found some things I couldn't live without. :-)

This shelf is shown upside down. I'll paint it either black or white. It is pretty big.. about 30" wide. I have a thing for shelving. lol I paid $5 for it.

The lamp matches a floor one that I also bought. These were $4. each. I decided to also buy the matching larger table lamp, but when I went back to get it another shopper was picking it up. I'm kicking myself now!

I was really mesmerized by this framed signed photo ($5.), which looks like it was photoshopped.. but I found the artist's website and she says it is all done in the darkroom. Check out her site below to see some lovely surreal images.

I also got a couple like new tops, some pots and pans for DD and a cookbook called Hollyhocks and Radishes. I thought I'd give it to DD as well, but after reading the good reviews at Amazon I may have to try some of the recipes first.

I haven't been to a garage sale all year until this one. Now I'm revved up to go. lol

We never have anything that cheap that is in decent shape around here.
In fact gummage sales have been few and far between here. Last ones I went to were the city wides in May.

cool finds! I want to find some chairs
for the dining room table. And I need some
cool lamps. but all the ones I see are really
quite ugly! Paint and new shades wouldn't help!
LOL I like yours!

I also like the shelf. I actually like it upside down!
that is how I would put it up! lol

Ah, an opportunity to speak on a religious note: In church a few weekends ago, our Old Testament reading was Leviticus 19:9-18 And I was struck by this passage: Quote: (9)"When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. (10)And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the LORD your God. I decided that, though I am not a farmer, this applies to me. The "gleanings" in my life are the outgrown kids' clothes, the furniture I no longer need. That I am not intended to wring every last drop of financial value from everything I have. But that I am supposed to leave the small-value things I don't need anymore, so that they can be used by those to whom their value will be larger. And THAT is why $2 for a wool suit. And that is why the idea is simply to move those things along. It's great if your church can make money from your "gleanings," but that's not God's point. He didn't tell those farmers to take the gleanings to the temple for the priests to sell, or even for the priests to eat. You're supposed to pass up the earnings potential in order to make them available to the people who so badly need them. Of course, your church rummage sale quite probably does benefit those to badly need a wool suit for $2. I know my mom's does--we were talking about this just last night. Her church (Trinity Lutheran in Des Moines) is in an economically sinking neighborhood, and its area residents who aren't members nonetheless come and buy things they like, need, etc., at a huge discount. And that is why they continue to do it, even though they don't make much money. So take what you have to the Goodwill now, and consider this to be following God's rules. Then, as the sale gets closer, and you find yourself more motivated to save it for there, you can if you'd like. What I want most for the stuff I donate is for it to end up in the hands of someone who will use it. And so I'd rather take kids' toys & clothes to the Children's Aid Society--it was too hard to swing this time around, but it's on my list. Bcs I believe they'll simply hand those clothes or toys to a kid who needs or wants them. Or they'll put the toys in the day-care centers they run, which will help them keep the centers both affordable and pleasant for the kids who need them.

I've had a number of patio sales that went well for me...the reason I say for "me" is that last year two friends brought things over to sell as well...I kept telling them to price low and it will go. By 11:00 am they had made just under $200 to my $700. If people see higher prices I believe it turns them off. Who cares what you paid for something...it's not worth that used. I've always advertised having things for men too (tools,etc)...it keeps the the ladies browsing longer if hubby is busy :) Consider having a box with kiddy things that are either extremely cheap or sometimes free (1 per child if free). Kids are great cutomers! I have to agree with those that mentioned plants selling well, they do! I'v put out barely used makeup items that flew off the table ..can you believe? Yet don't we all have things we've brought home, tried once never to use again? (it can be cleaned with wipes) And jewelry for sure. Bottles of water are a real money maker, especially on a hot day. If you're able, coffee in the morning. One thing that I won't put in are sheet sets...even though I tied them with nice ribbon they ended up open and strewn over the table numerous times. Unless you plan on hanging them on a hanger so people can look don't bother. Nice kitchen items (bowl sets, appliances, serving spoons) sell well. Donate cups and glasses that have no mates, for the most part they sit cluttering up a well thought out table. Keep re-arranging your area, filling in empty spaces. You'll be able to show off something that might have been overlooked at first glance. I always have music playing, usually instrumentals (no head banging)and love watching who starts tapping a toe. Signs into the home that say "family only". And always a sign at the entry that says "we love making a deal, just ask!" And there will be those return customers...the ones that are 1st to the sale, run off to the next and realize yours was the best to begin with :-D

We usually finds lots of good bargains. If it isn't something we have a use for and it isn't really a good deal we don't get it. Sometimes we have certain things we look for, like things for daughter's pond or for her yard or greenhouse. We both love to read so we get all of our reading material at rummage sales. I always look for sewing things and things for my kitchen that I can use. The main thing is to enjoy and have fun.

We love rummage sales. We went to two, over the weekend. We bought baby items (for a grandbaby due in November) and a couple of other things as well. I believe we came home with an infant car seat, a baby 'gate', a baby bath that fits in the kitchen sink, two antique washboards (one large and one small). I think that was it! We have been to several rummage sales already this spring. Seems like there are a few every weekend now. We bought some beautiful house plants at one 2-3 weeks ago!

I haven't been to a yard sale or rummage sale in a long time but even if I did I know I wouldn't find a good deal like you did or items like you found.

LOL I need to have my own rummage sale soon.

Wasn't a great yard saling day for me today. I look forward to it all week but you never know how it will go. Lots of sales today but not much of interest. I had the boys with me so that makes it harder too.

The boys got some toys and books, we got a couple of videos, one lame cookbook, some clothes for Nick in the fall and I got a top. I think that's it. Sounds like a good haul but it wasn't very satisfying. I do my retail therapy at yard sales and that just didn't cut it this week. I hope I can stay out of the stores the rest of the weekend.

Well, there's still the Goodwill store.

Cool finds, Lydia! I haven't been to very many sales this year. I went to a couple of yard sales yesterday...bought three or four old plates...which I really didn't need, but they were 50 cents for the batch. Also a fruit bowl, which makes about a dozen I have now...if not more. It was a dollar.

Today I went to a thrift shop and bought an old cookbook and a brass do dad that is a lady's hand. You can hang it up to hold a note or leave it laying to clip papers together. I have another one that is similar but no idea where.

I think the best thing lately was a Porceleir tea pot in mint condition from the thrift shop dumpster. I just have to look in there every once in awhile! ;)

Amber and I went out first thing this morning. I did great on books again. All are books I like to read, Beverly Lewis and others similar. He had the books, soft cover and hard, ten cents each or 12 for a dollar! I bought 3 dollars worth of them. I also picked up for a quarter each some divided plastic tray plates I have been looking for and also for a quarter a brand new box of Swiffer pads. Amber got a nice new insulated bag for fifty cents. Don't you just love it when you find some really great deals!

Went to 6 sales and bought nothing. I have some stuff listed on Craiglist including a playhouse. Hope it sells!
