Follow up to post about yard/rummage sales

We had the yard sale today and I wanted to follow up on all the advise I was given. There were 17 families that participated. Each set up our own tables, sold and collected for our own stuff. We sold $250, and were probably the second highest in sales. We only had a few items priced $5 or more and most were $1 or $2. We had things organized, kitchen stuff together, clothes together, everything clean and priced. Can you believe we only had 1 person ask us to come down on a price, I agreed to his offer and he ended up paying full price anyway, he said he just wanted to see if we would. In the end we only had two boxes of stuff left, and we dropped them off at the Salvation Army on the way home. All in all I think it was a success, and I wanted to thank each and everyone of you for helping to make it one.

the best yard sale we had was for the twins club and we basically did the same thing, only it was a fund riser for a kid's party...they chose my house as we had the longest driveway, lol...

sah54, thank you for taking the time to list and tally all of your expenditures. There are loads of times when people who come here looking for help wish to know the cost of landscape items. Just the "ball park" is often all they need. Too, some people have an idea that things for the yard should somehow cost next to nothing, and they are surprised to find that it's not the case. The information is helpful for letting people in on some of the costs they could expect. There is not a good SCIENTIFIC way to answer your question about whether using a designer would give you a better plan for the same money. I think it depends on the designer. Some people choose the wrong designer so are not as happy as you are after they have the work done. Admittedly, since I have a dog in the fight I am prejudiced, but I believe that IF a person chooses the right designer, they will achieve more for a given expenditure. Often, a homeowner does not know how to avoid wasting money, whereas a designer knows many ways. And they know many ways to enhance property. Hopefully, they have good taste as that would be key in how helpful they can be. But using a designer can be a double-edged sword as sometimes they find ways to design too much spending into the plan. You've done a good job and made yourself happy so I'm sure will have no regrets.

You need to understand that hardiness concerns are different for bush roses such as hybrid teas as opposed to climbers. If bush roses are damaged all the way to the ground, they will still bloom in flushes through the season on new shoots from underground. If you plant with the graft or bud union (if any) below grade, they will do OK in midwestern zone 5b (not necessarily northeastern zone 5b). However, plants will stay small, maybe regrowing to 40" by fall. Do try Earth Song, it is more hardy, vigorous and disease resistant than any hybrid tea, and the flowers are similar, if slightly less glamorous. On the other hand, if climbers are severely damaged, the regrowth is mostly canes with few flowers. Climbers need to be cane-hardy every year in your climate, and most are NOT cane-hardy in zone 5b. Local advice would be good, or tell us where you live. Aloha, for example, has been cane hardy in southern Michigan. Alchymist should be good. Quadra and Ramblin' Red are often recommended for zone 5.

We usually finds lots of good bargains. If it isn't something we have a use for and it isn't really a good deal we don't get it. Sometimes we have certain things we look for, like things for daughter's pond or for her yard or greenhouse. We both love to read so we get all of our reading material at rummage sales. I always look for sewing things and things for my kitchen that I can use. The main thing is to enjoy and have fun.

Sallysue......funny about taking it to the nursing home with me!! Actually, I should stick with the on-going joke I have with my son. I constantly tell him that I will be living with him forever...I'm sure his future wife (whoever she is) will have noooooo problem with that. Maybe he'll just stay in this house, he does have the same last name (obviously) so the initial in the backsplash won't be a problem at all!! Luckily he's got a great sense of humor for a 19-year old. I do really love the tile, but I guess it might make more sense to hang it on a wall or put it in a stand on the countertop some where. Of course I can always see what my husband thinks too. AND, this still leaves me with what "little" thing I want to do behind the range...

Congratulations on your first yard sale!
There were a couple this weekend here (it's still too early in the season), and the one we went to was advertised for 8 am. We got there at 8, and everything was pretty picked over. Either that, or they didn't have anything much to sell! :)

So I guess the time is just a guesstimate......

I've had good and bad experiences holding garage sales. Did one with my neighbor-we had a ball. At my last garage sale, someone stole my cash box when I wasn't looking. Will never do another. My favorite story was a woman who came in a big car, argued about a bowl for 35 cents, finally paid a quarter, then ten minutes later she came back with it. "There's a chip in the bottom. I want my money back". I would have just chucked it, it was only a quarter. I did give her a refund.

Jannie - I am sorry to hear about your money box getting taken, that would ruin me on having any more too! I kept the money in my pocket, larger bills in one and smaller ones in the other. The story about the bowl is funny, I probably would have given her her quarter and then asked her if she would like to keep the bowl.

Glad to hear you did so well. And, thanks for posting a follow up. It's always nice to hear what happens. What would you say sold the most? It sounds like most of your items sold but were there some types of items that sold better than others?

At my sale, kitchen gadgets, children's toys (all were like new and still in the boxes), clothes, and books sold out, pocket books sold a few, but we had some left. Bags of misc. screws, drawer knobs, and tools caught the attention of the men. I sold the entire box of video's for $10, that is the item the man made an offer on but went ahead and paid full price.

The table next to ours, they had the most sales it seemed, sold children's clothes, toys, and sports equipment.

Things that didn't seem to sale were furniture items, desks, chairs, tables, and exercise equipment. But we had the sale in the gym at a local high school, and purchases had to be carried quite a ways to the parking lot, so that might have been a consideration in what was purchased.

I am planning to have a garage sale/sales? to get rid of my things I do not plan to move.
I think I will have one on Apr. 21 for the smaller things...and one again in May of the furniture etc. that I do not want to move.

Do you think this is a good idea or should I try to have one huge sale? I can't physically get things carried out, so I guess I will have it inside also...so many things are in the basement that are just too big for "us women" to handle and I have no man-power here...all of my kids live a distance and they are working.

Phoggie, often-times people have more than one sale. Some have sales all summer long.

Phoggie, you need a friend or relative to be with you. I wouldn't want to be home alone with strangers. There is a bit of theft at times. I would go through your house and pack up everything of value and stick it in a place in the house that is under lock and key so it doesn't walk out the door. I've been to indoor garage sales before, but they need to be well manned.

Might be worth hiring a neighborhood teen to carry stuff up and out for you. Do you have a garage you could store furniture in? Then you could craigslist it and no one would come in your home. I'd still have one or two friends with me when people came to look and give them the impression there is still a man in the house. I've never had a problem with craigslist and its ideal for bigger items. You can have your small sale first, but make posterboard ads of furniture you will be selling and place them around your sale area. . Have the pictures on the posterboards too.
