What did you think of Oprah's GoodBye show?

I watched her real, final, last show yesterday. Oprah standing alone on The stage, musing, rambling, thanking, blah blah blah. It's not like she's been banished from our planet. She's got her own friggin 24/7 network! I'd like to see her go back to acting. I remember her in The Color Purple. I don't think she should be playing Eddie Murphy's or Chris Rock's Mom , but I think she is a genuine developed person and her many life experiences would help her play serious fictional characters, perhaps a wife,mother, grandmother?

I enjoyed the show. I have heard some say it was "preachy' but I think it had alot of wisdom to offer.
I have been an occasional viewer over the years. She has done much for many. I respect her as a great human being.
I look forward to seeing what else she has to offer in the future.

I like Oprah but I too thought she was "preachy" on the last show and found it hard to watch. I thought Oprah would have made a good evangelist. I am glad all the "hype" is over. I usually don't watch tv during the day but if I remembered I would put her show on when it was repeated at 1:00 am. I don't have cable or satellite so I won't get to see any of her OWN network shows unless I watch them at a friend's house.

Thanks for the additional mouse plant information. I'll be sure to mark it somehow so I don't dig it up (or at least reduce the likelihood of me digging it up) during its summer dormancy. Amy, you're as likely, or unlikely, to get fruit from your seedling as from most grafted, named varieties, so I'd say test-drive you new seedling and see what you think. Otherwise you'll be spending prime money for a grafted named variety that probably won't bear fruit anyway in this climate. My old one has become a very, very attractive little tree. As gardengal mentioned, they really can't be expected to bear fruit in the Pacific Northwest unless you can give them additional protection. My old one does flower reliably, so that's a start, but in this climate they're basically fun foliage plants. The raintree catalog mentions that clearly, and I hope the sales person did when you talked with them. I still may plant one in this current garden as a foliage plant. I just finished watching her final show, I found it not boring at all; it was a recap of what her 25 years have been and it was like reading a book of lessons in life, I've read my fair share of spiritual and self help books and even at 59, I struggle with certain issues and wonder when I'll ever really "get" it. She gives me hope to keep at it and be what I can be, to find my meaning in life. Oprah said it all, in a humble and loving way, I personally do not doubt her sincerety. She's no different than she was 25 years ago, down to earth and wiser than she was then, and certainly richer ( good for her) but she gives credit to everyone she's learned from, it's the essence of what shaped her. She's a true succcess story in my book, one of a kind.

Ima! You gotta get busy, girl! Introspection is not an occupation for sad times; it'll get you bogged down every time, & that's when we make disastrous mistakes. *Obligate* yourself to do something; it's too easy to dwell on sad feelings & become immobilized if you don't "have to" do...whatever it is. When I went through a break-up many years ago, I decided to take Jazzercise. It worked great! as long as I wasn't moping when it was time for me to drive to the rec center. The only way I could make myself participate when I felt mopey (which is when we *most* need physical activity & other people) was to sign up to lead a Jazzercise class at church. I knew all those women were depending on me, & I went to every class. Please don't focus too much on your grandson's seeming lack of interest; he's very very young, & the young can move on much faster than we can. They have to, just to keep up with themselves, because they themselves are changing every day. Remember when you were a little girl & "back-to-school" shopping every September meant new dresses & shoes & a winter coat because the old ones were too little? I remember feeling sorry for my aunts & my mother because they stayed the same & never got a new dress or a new coat. Children shoot through time at warp speed, changing & adapting & getting "new clothes" as a matter of course, & we...keep climbing into the same clothes for a much longer time. & be careful that you don't talk to him because *you* need to talk. Talk to anybody else. Talk to everybody else. Talk here. Talk to the moon: a woman told me that she was broken-hearted when her adolescent son went to live with his father; she said she climbed onto the backyard trampoline the night her son left & "squalled & bawled & snotted & hollered", & nobody but the moon saw or heard her. *but* this is my free advice (& worth every penny, but I've had a bit of experience & I've been through some experiences with friends): Stay away from that man. Stay away from thoughts that you "need" that man, that he would be any answer to any problem at all, that he would be helpful in any way. Write yourself 3 lists: a list of instances in which he's responded callously to your needs, instances of how he's been a stinker, played mind games, put anybody/everybody ahead of you, treated you high-handedly, etc, & look at those pages any time you want to pick up the phone. a list of how many times & to what extent you went all-out to make his life easier or happier, & look at those pages any time you want to pick up the phone. a list of how many times & to what extent he went all-out to make your life easier or happier, & look at that blank piece of paper any time you want to pick up the phone. I think if they make a movie from the book, The Help, about African American maids in the south during the 60's, there would be a good part for Oprah.

I remember back in 70s she was a news woman on baltimore channel.I dont think shes worth billions but guess whos trying to steal her spot...Rachael Ray,Im sorry but I cant stand that woman.'
I had to laugh she had her husband on one time coking ,she was using those odd low sided casseroles shes got out.He went to pour it all ran out the hole in the dish.It was funny,now she sits with coffee in her hand uuuuhhhh

I never watched her. Oprah was always about Oprah. She never met a camera she did not like.

For me...I'm glad it's over. It's not like she did anything amazing or historical. She was a talk show host.

It's not like she "retired"...now that she has her own network. I have often wondered why her and Stedman have not married though.

I saw parts of it, and if it was "preachy" it was her show and she could do anything she wanted to. Maybe she wanted to leave her audiences w/ some words of wisdom. Who knows? I have always appreciated how she helped people--sending a lot of kids to college, giving things away, being generous. I've never been a huge fan, but you can't help but admire a generous person. Sure, she has A LOT, but a lot of people that have a lot are not generous. It's like they just can't get enough. So, that sure trumps any criticisms of her. Y'all that didn't like her "preachy" show should have just changed the channel.

I had a cocktail and felt sad; I'll miss Oprah.

I agree she is a good actress and have enjoyed each role she's played.

Had a chance to catch a few of the shows on OWN..some very interesting. It will take some time, but I like the direction Oprah is headed with her new network.

All the best to you Oprah! Get some rest and enjoy reading under your favorite Oak tree. :)

I think it's interesting that so many people who never watch her show comment about how stuck she is on herself. How do they know if they never watch her show? I watch her show and I don't see it. There's a flash now and then but really, she is pretty special and has done a lot of good things.

It's all about Oprah.
I like what Drew Magary says:
"Oprah has basically built a career out of tricking people into being inspired by Oprah talking about herself.
Oprah's slogan is "Live your best life," but what her slogan really means is "Live Oprah's life." Read the books SHE likes. Get advice from HER doctors. Hang out with HER friends. Buy the things SHE buys. She's a walking infomercial.
Even her most personal revelations are calculated for maximum brand impact."

And about her generosity....she has to cut her taxes somehow.

I can't imagine many people can relate to what it's like to pour your entire life into something for 25 years and then have it end. It wasn't just a job where you put in your 8 hours then go home. Yes, she has other projects but it's not the same. I imagine it's very difficult for her. I know I feel sad when people cut into a cake that I spent 8 hours making and decorating, lol.

It's always interesting that the people who complain that she never did anything are the ones who give back the least themselves. I'd be willing to bet most of them don't give generously to charity with their own money, yet somehow expect celebrities to give away almost everything. It's all relative and I'm sure all the many people she's been generous towards appreciate it.

Though I didnÃ¯Â¿Â½t watch the show often, I admire and respect how sheÃ¯Â¿Â½s trying to live her life, help others and bring people up with her, not kicking them down on her way up the ladder. And she seems to manage to do it with some semblance of dignity and self-respect in a very fickle industry. SheÃ¯Â¿Â½s quite the business woman. IÃ¯Â¿Â½d work for her in a heartbeat.

Dotmom, they did make a movie based on the novel "The Help" which I believe comes out this summer. It stars the girl that was in Easy A as Skeeter, sorry can't remember her name. Can't wait to see it. I do remember Bryce Dallas Howard plays the snobby friend.

I enjoyed her shows. But please keep in mind that the generosity didn't come out of her pocket, except for things like the school she built. The gifts, cars, houses, trips, all were from the companies. I do think some believe she has paid for all that out of pocket.
But it WAS her name that gave those companies the incentive to give away those things.
I did see a new side though. Oprah's show was her staff. They did everything. She got the glory. Glad to hear she paid them well, and they all will still have a job.
