Questions about Plantation Shutters over Sliding Patio Doors

I have a set of large sliding glass patio doors. Together the 2 doors are about 96 inches tall and 120 inches wide.

My husband and I are considering plantation shutters - but I only saw them once over sliding doors (back when we were still house hunting!) and I can't remember the configuration. I'm trying to figure out how they would hang, how they would open (to access the door), and do I need to remove the baseboard molding around the door cutout? do we need to add trimwork or a frame? etc.

We're going to visit a few showrooms to check things out and get some pricing but I want to go in prepared :)

If you have shutters over your sliders do you mind sharing a photo and how yours operate?

Plantation shutters are very pricey, but you probably already know that.

IMO plantation shutters are confining, they just make me feel shut in. You wouldn't want french doors? Or is the opening to wide?

In my previous house I took out the sliding glass doors and put in french doors. It wasn't so common twenty years ago though.

The doors are really tall and wide, wider and taller than standard sizes but I'm sure that the size of french doors can be customized. I'm not sure if they would look too large though - especially compared to my front door????

I could probably do something like this though - with windows on the side...now I have something to think about! :)

Or maybe I'll just save us money by getting new curtains! My husband's going to kill me! LOL I always have so many ideas that usually turn into us spending more money than planned!

Sliders are great if space is a concern. As you won't have to worry about the door opening into walls or furniture. They've come a long ways since the old aluminum doors. Vinyl is the most common door material (at least where I live) and they come in a few colors. Provide you buy the right glass package they are energy efficient. Some even come with a foot bolt that is additional lock instead of having to use a broom handle. Patio doors (like a French door but one panel is stationary) are great if you have no space concerns. They typically have wider openings than a slider door. They also have sliding screens so you can still enjoy having the door open without bugs. These doors come in variety of materials from vinyl to steel to wood to wood with aluminum cladding on the exterior. Typically these doors are harder meet the current energy efficiency standards. Which that is mostly determined by which material the door is made out of. These doors can come with multipoint lock systems which means while they lock in the middle they also lock at the top and bottom. Which makes a glass door as secure as it can. Both a good doors just depends on which look/space you have for the door.

You know besides putting on a roof, windows and the ''treatment'' of them seem to be the most expensive thing about owning a house. I'm grateful I didn't have to buy mine, but we did have to have ours painted, as the original paint color looked fine from the inside, but clashed with the color of the outside of our house. (As our siding is stone, something had to be done, and painting the plantation shutters was the path of least resistance. As IF that would ever seem like the easiest thing to do!) So because of that...just as a word of caution, if you do go this route, make sure you like the color looking into your house as well. Hiring a painter to paint all those louvers wasn't inexpensive either! I can easily see how this might have escaped the previous owner's attention, or perhaps she was colorblind. Either way, it helps to pay attention to what's happening on both sides of the window.

kswl, shutters are not easy to paint, whether you brush or spray, there's always the chance of drips on the opposite side you're working on and you won't see until it's too late. That was not my reason for keeping them that way though. I just happen to like white shutters. As for the door, whether it is stained or not it will pretty much look like a black hole at night. All our wood work is stained, including doors. We have two sets of french doors in the Gentleman's Parlor, one set in the Sunroom and one in the basement. Our front entry door is full-glass with full glass sidelights. If the WTs are not closed/pulled down, they all look like black holes at night. There's no getting around that unless you cover them with some sort of WT.

To all reading this post: First of all, the quoted post should be attributed to Brickeyee. My sincerest apologies for my error. Here's a copy-and-paste version with the relevant section. Posted by brickeyee (My Page) on Thu, Jan 31, 08 at 19:46 .... The track should also NEVER be attached to a header in a weight bearing wall. A secondary header should be installed with about a 1/2 inch clearance below the structural header. If the header bows (and they all do to some extent) it can cause problems with the track. If the wall is NOT weight bearing the header will not be loaded and you CAN omit the second header. Decker, You asked what I meant by a secondary header. The real answer is I don't know; I'm just parrotting what I've read. But the term was used when describing 2x4(?)as something to which the pocket door track would be attached. BTW, this door installation is not a DIY project. I'm just trying to second-guess potential problems in construction. Again, I apologize if I've opened a can of worms.

I have plantation shutters throughout my home and on 3 sliding doors. I love them. I will take a picture and post later today.

Not great pictures...had to use my cell phone...please excuse my messy dinette area. These are the shutters in my kitchen, I have similar doors in my master bedroom and guest bungalow.
