leather or fabric--please help me decide

My kitchen has been done for two years (!) but I still read and post here, and have so many kitchen buddies here that I thought I would come here for help. (I also did post in Home Decorating).

Please help me decide -- leather or fabric chair for my sunroom.

Here's the situation: we have an eight year old leather loveseat Wonderful, but terrible faded now. The leather is a lovely semi aniline which turned out to be just a terrible choice for a sunroom. How could I have done this? This kind of leather cannot be brought back to where it was because of the coating. It can only be sprayed and turned into a pigmented leather, and this I do not want to do. Right now it is still soft, and kind of shabby chic -- but, really quite faded.

So, we want to replace the old uncomfortable wicker chair.

I can get a new leather chair/ottoman in exactly the same leather as the love seat. Crazy? It would be much much darker at first, but would fade. But in the meantime it would make the loveseat look, I'm afraid, not shabby chic but simply trashed. And, it might be too much leather, match-matchy.

Or I can get a fabric club chair/ottoman, maybe something slipcovered in a light fabric (like the shades) -- with extra slipcovers --

The leather chair would be prettier but the fabric might be a better choice in the context of the rest of the room -- what do you think?

Of course DH wants leather. All men want leather and wood (and we already have lots of both)

Both options would be comfortable so that is not the issue.

Please help me decide . . .

Hi Sayde, I love your sunroom with all those plants! IMHO, a fabric chair would look great in there. You could also consider a leather and fabric chair like this:

Oh dear, my instinct says walk away. Granite is expensive and when that much money is on the table.... If you feel this uncomfortable NOW, imagine what you will feel like when he has all your money? And add to this if he does a terrible job. A red flag goes up for me that he mis-quoted his price. Even if he made a mistake on the price he needs to eat the difference. His mistake he looses the $400 not you! You will find a great installer who is a true artist and fair in their price. I would ask every neighbor, every church member,every one of my girl friends who they used to get their counters done by. Ask your dentist, doctor, child's teacher, laywer, taxman/woman... And you did the right thing by coming to GW. I don't live in Long Island in Suffolk County,But I am almost positive there are Gardenwebbers who do and can give you names of people they have used. I wonder if you could find out through FKB? I will do a search later to see. I love my granite fabricator. He and his crew worked with DH and I to create the most favorite part of my kitchen. He did not have my kind of granite in any of his locations. He helped me find it. When I could not afford the price. He did another search all over new england until he found slabs that I could afford and he could afford to work with. My seams are flawless and bookmatched, my edges divine, and I had a say where the template went. This is how a good installer works. I wish you the best in finding a good artist. I think your dining room chair options are a great idea. I am not sure I understand the curtains in the dining room where you can see the stairs going up on the side. Does that separate the LR from the DR? You asked for other suggestions and mine would be to take them down. As for the LR, I don't think it'd be too much wicker for either of those chairs. I think the first one looks nicer or more contemporary. The 2nd one looks more grandmotherly or porch-y IMHO. Depending upon the proximity of LR to DR you might consider whether this is too much, I couldn't tell but otherwise I think the style and texture would look nice with your sofa, art, colors, etc. Trim - I think black would be a preference thing. It would look fine, maybe make the rooms look more dark - you seem to have a lot of darker accessories so depending on the look you are after... The white looks fine as-is. You could try the 'cut out black construction paper and tape it on the trim to check it out' before painting technique (or hope for a photoshopper to help). Good luck - they are nice rooms!

I am not an expert but except for the TV stand, everything seems as tho it is neutral and you could use the colors you prefer. The experts have an order in which you should begin your decor purchases and I'm sure they will help you. You can use color! Artwork, rug, pillows and throws in proper colors will brighten the somewhat dark tendency. Lamps will help. How nice to be able to pretty much start from scratch with accessories and art!

Update: I chose the Taj Mahal and it has been installed! Now waiting for cabinets to be painted. The Taj reads a little grey/green in my space and I want to bring out the warmer neutral tones in a backsplash. Hardware is aged brass. While it may be a little early to finalize, I am backsplash obsessed right now. Current options are a matte crackle 3x6 subway in a sand color and an ivory gloss in a 4x5 size. Here is a picture of my stone against by trim color (BM Linen White) which will also be cabinet color and the two tile options. What do you think? Other ideas?

I vote fabric as well, I think you need to bring some pattern or color in there, rather than matching the love seat. Of course, I base that entirely on that one picture. Other views may lead me to think differently.

Fabric, something textured and cozy to sit on, although remember that fabric fades, too.

I never thought the loveseat looked shabby. Isn't leather better as it gets older?

Heavy leather is the wrong vibe for the sunroom. You don't get that much sunlight to start with where you live, so why suck it out of the room where you can best enjoy it?

Pick something made for sun. Sunbrella has lots of fabric choices now, though you sometimes have to hunt for them across multiple retail places.

I second the idea of Sunbrella. We have some pieces in our sunniest room and it wears so well.

A third vote for Sunbrella. They seem to have more fabric color and texture choices now than in years past. Your sunroom is beautiful!

I love your room! The chair posted with the combination of leather and fabric seems like a good idea. If not that, I'd go with a fabric also.

I almost bought Sunbrella fabric for my living room sofa ( I have two teenage boys and a tween girl). I found a great site to order from and they were great about sending samples etc. I'm hesitant to share the website on the forum because my post might get deleted. I think, one of my postings was deleted a couple of days ago because I posted the name of a website that sells the most gorgeous mother of pearl tiles. I am in no way affiliated with them just wanted to share. Oh well!

Thanks so much for all the input! I real appreciate it! Sunbrella is a good idea -- I was even thinking of may-be a dark upholstered chair with a set of off-white Sunbrella for summer.
